Paul Scholes takes dig at Michael Carrick in now deleted post after Man Utd lose to Newcastle

Paul Scholes takes a dig at Michael Carrick in a now deleted Instagram post after Man Utd lose 2-1 to Newcastle.

Scholes sparked quite the controversy on social media overnight when he appearing to take down a sarcastic story about Manchester United’s interim manager Michael Carrick.

He took a public swipe at his ex-team-mate despite the Red Devils sitting third in the Premier League table.

Paul Scholes wrote: “Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos Utd have been crap last 4 games… night,” with the story having a kissing emoji, then a heart emoji for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali.

In first half added time, Jacob Ramsey was controversially sent off for second yellow card after referee Peter Bankes deemed the player to have dived.

Anthony Gordon netted a penalty having been brought down by Bruno Fernandes inside box, then Casemiro quickly got Man Utd level with a header from Fernandes’ corner.

But it was a superb strike from substitute William Osula in the 90th minute that gave the hosts a much needed win to move Newcastle up to 12th in the Premier League.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick speaking to TNT Sports: “We are not happy the way we played tonight. The way the game panned out we had it in our hands largely but credit to Newcastle and they way they approached it, we knew it would be tough but we navigated the game to a position where we could kick on but we didn’t. Bitterly disappointed really.

“I don’t think it was the 10 men, we just didn’t play good enough. We can’t make excuses for that. We all take responsibility for that.

“It was just the quality of the performance, it wasn’t character or wanting to win, it’s easy to throw that just because you don’t win a game of football

“Newcastle deserved to win tonight, it hurts me to say that. That is how it was. We need to get back to work and be better for the next game.

“We’ve lost one game, we haven’t played well enough but in the grand scheme of things we are in a decent position. Tonight hurts but we will be better for the next one.

“You have to get back at it, work hard and do the things we did to win the games we’ve won. We can do that, we are a good team, tonight wasn’t for us.

“We have to learn from it and get better for it. We had a lot of praise lately and the boys deserve it, this doesn’t change how we approach the next game. We’ve got everything to play for.”

Carrick speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Obviously bitterly disappointed. We came here to get something, we knew it would be a tough start, they were going to make us work for it, we navigated the game to put ourselves in a position to kick on but we didn’t do that. Tonight hurts a lot, especially the way we conceded at the end which makes it more extreme.

“We can be better as a team. It is a lesson for us, at some point we were going to lose a game of football.

“We’ve been on a good run, put ourselves in a decent position so it is one game and we will definitely learn from it. We have to and we have to be better for it.”

On the battle for Champions League places being tight: “[It was] always going to be, tonight doesn’t change that. We put ourselves in the position by winning games, tonight hurts, it is disappointing but we move on and have to be better next time out.”

On 11 days before their next game against Aston Villa: “It doesn’t really make any difference. Losing a game, especially in that matter, it is something we have to take and accept and understand why that happens. Whenever the next game is we will deal with it. We know it is a little bit longer but it gives us time to prepare.”

On what went wrong in build up to Newcastle’s winning goal: “It is not for me to dissect that now. I think we are just disappointed with the result there was a lot in the game we could be better with and we will have to be.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “An amazing night. It was a great performance all the way through. 11 v 11 or 11 v 10. I thought we deserved to win.

“The main emotion was trying to work out how we’d play in that second half. We wanted to regroup. I thought Jacob Ramsey’s sending off was really harsh. I don’t think he’s looking for a penalty there.

On Anthony Gordon: “He’s turned into a very good penalty taker for us. He earned the penalty himself with a typical driving run. I think the pairing of Gordon and Elangha gave them trouble in the second half.

“We knew we wouldn’t have the majority of the ball and that we’d have to defend well. There have been a lot of questions about our defending lately, so it was a good opportunity to answer those questions and we did.

“At 10 men, you know your goalkeeper is going to have saves to make. He’s a top-class goalkeeper with really good experience.

On Will Osula’s winner: “He did 10 shots at the end of training and he wanted more. Fair play to him. It’s the desire to repeat and to practice. He’s delivered an amazing moment for the supporters here. It’s a great moment for him and he deserves it. Hopefully it’s a turning point for him.

Here’s how fans reacted after Paul Scholes takes a dig at Michael Carrick in a now deleted post after Man Utd lose to Newcastle…

@PKettleWhite: It doesn’t make sense why he would do that. Surely he knows that putting that out will only bring more negativity to a team that has recently been a positive for once. I can’t think of any other team where the old legends are determined to knock the club down than support them

@433FutbolFan: Class of 92 are absolutely bottom tier sewer rats.. for some reason they don’t like when someone’s doing well and hit back the moment things go wrong. Paul Scholes couldn’t crack it at Oldham as a manager but has the mouth to talk 🗣️ about someone doing 100x better job than him

@UTDGeorge7: Coming across like he’s bitter he’s not been given the job, very weird reaction

@gazzarobbo7: He can feel free to put his name forward to have a go, oh no of course he won’t it’s easier to sit at home and criticise the ones that have got the bollocks to try it, stand up or shut up you 🤡

@_LiamLFC_: Why are all of your legends proper weirdos 😂😂😂

@Culturecams: Lmao i usually dont care about the ex pros comments at all but this is mad weird 😂💀

@AnnemarieDray: I’m absolutely done with these ex players. Michael Carrick in there doing his best to secure champions league football and they’re acting like this? Yes, it was absolutely poor tonight but if they don’t support the club then stop pretending to.

@LeahGS: I just can’t get my head around this like from an ex player that also played alongside Carrick to make a comment like that just screams he doesn’t want the club to be successful. The performance deserved critique absolutely but this just feels classless! #MUFC
