Paul Scholes has been labelled ‘arrogant and classless’ by fans online for what he said about Newcastle’s Eddie Howe.
Speaking on the Overlap following Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win over Liverpool, a Newcastle supporter put forward the suggestion to Scholes and Jamie Carragher: “I want to ask you… does Eddie Howe deserve a statue?”
Scholes could not hold back his laughter, then replied with a smirk: “You won the League Cup f***ing hell! Everyone tries to get knocked out of that all year!”
This win marked Newcastle’s first domestic trophy in 70 years, ending a long drought for the club, and overcoming nine successive losses at Wembley .

NEWCASTLE STATEMENT:
The Leader of Newcastle City Council has put the wheels in motion to bestow Eddie Howe with the Freedom of the City.
Coun Karen Kilgour has submitted a nomination to confer Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup-winning head coach with the city’s highest honour.
Eddie Howe, who was appointed in November 2021, oversaw the club’s first domestic trophy success in 70 years when his side beat Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.
Coun Kilgour said: “What Eddie has achieved during his time at Newcastle United is nothing short of extraordinary and I’m delighted to nominate him for Freedom of the City.
“Newcastle United is part of the fabric of our city with the fortunes of the club playing a huge part in the lives of supporters in Newcastle and across the world, myself included.
“Generations of supporters have never seen their beloved club lift a domestic trophy, and under his leadership we all now have treasured memories of a truly unforgettable day.
“More than winning the Carabao Cup, he steadied the ship following his arrival and steered Newcastle towards a brighter future. The disappointment of 2023’s final didnât fester, it simply galvanised him and his team, the players, and supporters to push to go further.
“Throughout his tenure he has handled himself with grace and dignity, being modest in success and measured in the face of any challenges.
“He will forever be a hero to our city and I’m incredibly proud to do my bit to recognise his accomplishments.”
Nominations for Freedom of the City are subject to the ratification of members at a full council meeting.
Should his nomination be approved, Eddie would join other notable Newcastle United figures in the receiving the recognition, including Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby Robson and Shaka Hislop.
The club itself was awarded the Freedom of the City in the 1990s after celebrating its centenary year.
The Honorary Freeman status is the highest honour the council can bestow on an eminent individual or group. The names of all honorary freemen are carved into the walls of the Banqueting Hall in the Civic Centre.
Here’s how fans reacted with Paul Scholes labelled ‘arrogant and classless’ for what he said about Newcastle’s Eddie Howe…
@NUFCblogcouk: That response from Scholes is absolutely rank. Arrogant, out of touch & completely classless. Ending that 70 year wait was always going to = an outpour of emotion after decades of disappointment through generations of fans. If Newcastle can’t celebrate that, what is the point?
@NUFCMurph: Stick to scranning your daughters trotters Scholes you weird little goblin
@Brady1892: It’s gas Scholsey saying teams try to get knocked out of that, yet the last 11 winners before Newcastle comprised of Man City, Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea. I guess they didn’t do a great job of getting knocked out then đ«ąđ
@MagnificoMags: Scholes is embarrassing.
@TAIEpodcast: And they wonder why every fan up and down the country hates #MUFC
@now_arsenaI: What an embarrassing reply. Let Newcastle fans celebrate however they like. If they think Eddie Howe deserves a state, then he deserves a statue.
@AFCMinded: Massive sign of football snobbery. Success at different clubs are not the same. First trophy in 6 decades, he definitely deserves a statue. Otherwise it means only managers that win titles deserve statues and are doing a great job, that’s not true.
@fewpints: WOW ⊠what a bunch of arrogant fuckwits, context is everything. Mind you Scholes was the helmet the other lad was being sincere.
@fez_1892: The best 2 teams in the country between them have won this same competition 6 out the last 8 years canât be that bad. 15/20 years ago maybe it was over looked the last decade shows itâs been took seriously so stop talking utter đ© đ
@wheeler_avfc19: First piece of silverware in 70 years and that’s Scholes’ reaction? He’s an arrogant wanker that bloke, proper unlikeable. Listening to his opinions also proves just because you’re a top player doesn’t make you knowledgeable about the game or a top pundit
@NUFCblogcouk: đ “You’ve won the League Cup, f****** hell” – What an arrogant, out of touch & classless reaction from Paul Scholes. After 70 years without a domestic trophy, Sunday was a release of emotion & hurt that’s built up for decades. If #NUFC can’t celebrate that, what is the point?
@HJColley92: The problem with the âBig 6â right here. Dismissing Newcastleâs first trophy in 70-years. Knocking out the top 2 sides in the league to do so. Howe deserves the plaudits and praise. Fans deserves an overhaul of these ex-Utd and Liverpool bias clowns for some fresh insight.
@GallowgateShots: Scholes is such a disingenuous bloke. He mocked NUFC fans for wanting Bruce out and laughed on this very show when the likes of Howe and Potter were candidates for the job. He knows for fine well success is different for every club but mocks the Carabao Cup. Insufferable.
@LazyNumber9: âTry to get knocked out of it all seasonâ shows how out of touch football clubs/players/ex players/glory hunters are to genuine fans, donât care what competition it is, youâre a weird football âfanâ if you donât want your own team to try and win a trophy at any level
@LittleHenryD: They just don’t get it. Never will.. let’s see what they think if they go 56 years without a cup or 70 without a domestic cup…
@LilHay: Scholes is the biggest prick. Itâll probably be 70 years till your lot win a trophy again, so go fuck yourself. Fucking embarrassment twat
@T_martin_11: Think itâs just a poorly timed question, days after winning the trophy. Wrong people to ask, set himself up to be shot down. pure arrogance from scholes, lack of class but can see why he laughed because of the amount he won. Itâs a question for toon fans not others
@Jeep_1970: This shows the arrogance of Scholes, he was in a very successful team, won loads, unlike #NUFC. We are so happy we have won something, we take nothing for granted. Maybe why Man Red are disliked by so many other fans.
@NUFCIrving1010: Major trophy and a great prospect of achieving Champions League football again. Potentially a fantastic achievement, as weâve been hamstrung with PSR issues for 3 windows. I donât fully agree with the question asked, but itâs disrespectful of Scholes to laugh (and arrogantly)
Paul Scholesâ reaction here is genuinely awful. Complete lack of a wider understanding of football and other clubs dreams and aspirations. Mocking, dismissive and out of touch. A great player, one of the best, but this is embarrassing from him. https://t.co/5KIyn95vix

Shockingly bad response. Some clubs are just entitled and arrogant. Who are they to look down on another club’s fans enjoying a special moment in their history. Same tourist cartel clubs who tried to join a super league and jeopardised the entire football pyramid out of greed. pic.twitter.com/abfS9iGlpF
