Paul Mullin hits back at fans accusing him of diving to win penalty as Wrexham beat Scunthorpe

Paul Mullin hits back at fans accusing him of diving to win a penalty as Wrexham beat Scunthorpe in the National League on Tuesday.

Wrexham extended their unbeaten home record with a win as Paul Mullin’s penalty gave the hosts a lead in the first half after he was deemed to have brought down by Ben Richards–Everton.

Mullin went down in the area as the game entered the closing stages, converting his 35th goal of the season from the spot.

Wrexham are still five points behind the current National League leaders Notts County, but have two games in hand. Scunthorpe remains in 23rd place.

But much of the talk online surrounded Paul Mullin, fans working out whether he dived or not…

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson saying, as per LeaderLive: “I am pleased the win.

“It wasn’t our most fluent home performance by any stretch of the imagination.

“We got the goal, I thought we’d done alright to that point and then we kind of took a back step as a team; we gave Scunthorpe a bit of belief.

“Second half, we did better but it was a night for the solid players.

“Jordan Tunnicliffe at the back, Ben Tozer and Rob Lainton, solid citizens to stand up and make sure we got the result.

“We had to dig deep as a team. At times the quality level wasn’t where we’d like it to be but it is just about keeping those wins coming and we have done that.

“Scunthorpe were a team who have been lifted by about six or seven new signings.

“A new manager has come in and they had a great win against Dagenham at the weekend.

“They worked really hard for him and they gave us a tough game but we just had to stand strong as a team.

“We restricted them to a few moments but not loads and it was great to get the win.”

“You’ve watched it and I have been tied into the game and the stats read we have done well,” said Scunthorpe boss Jimmy Dean speaking to the club media. “I thought we were excellent. We were just on the wrong side of a couple of key decisions and a couple of chances.

“Before any negativity goes against Fozzy [Owen Foster], he’s spilt one ball when we are chasing the game. He has made two big saves I think and their keeper has dropped three or four in and around and we haven’t followed up. That’s the percentages they have used.

“I am really proud of the level we have had here and we need just to get better and better. We have given these a proper game of football tonight. Looking forward I am happy and I know results haven’t gone how we wanted them to tonight but there is a long way to go. I am as positive as I can be.”

This is what Twitter users said as Paul Mullin hits back at fans accusing him of diving to win a penalty as Wrexham beat Scunthorpe…

@wrexhamcarl: Waiting for someone from Nottingham to say its Tomato ketchup!

@kevwrexham1974: You tell um mulls lad #utst

@AidanWilko_1717: Tosser, clean dive. Money grabbing club

@Jon_hughes1: The haters will still hate. Fuckem. Let’s win this bloody league!

@v_wrexham: Poor, late challenge from Scunthorpe’s Richard’s-Everton, studs raised, catches Mullin’s trailing leg at knee height. Nailed on penalty.

@steveebower: And that there is why I hope @Official_NCFC go up and @Wrexham_AFC languish in this league for years!

@LadPandy: STUDS!

@craigyjones17: He probly got one of Ryun Renolds make up people to draw it on or sumfin.

@Crowley131: never touched him. referee should easily have spotted that from his position.

@blathers67: If they really need to rely on penalties against relegation candidates they really need to up their game. If Wrexham win the league it’ll be in spite of Parky, not because of him.

@JonnyBoyden: Mullin diving. Huge surprise to everyone. Bet Disney don’t show it from that angle.

@MarcoPuliga1: Regular occurrence apparently, that’s why they pay the big bucks 🤪

@L_Tab: He doesn’t touch him

@Champagneblade: He goes down very easily quite frequently. You’d think officials would be smart to him and when they don’t give a pen they should be booking him for simulation. At least that dive was in the box!

@rreczulski: He does it all the time ,sick of the poor standard of refs in this league & the constant pandering to Wrexham because of all the hype, Fergy must be in the stands somewhere. Shocking refereeing. A game we were well in, & we need refs to get things right.

@DanEggington: If we are all honest. Every team has players who take advantage of situations like this. Let’s not slate this and turn a blind eye when our team does it and they bloody well do and you know it

@DN35GTFC: Mullin doing Mullin things. Gets paid that much to fall as much as my Nan

@LewisFaulkes: And their fans have the cheek to do sarcastic cheers when they get a throw 🙃

@bowiebhoy72: Not for me mate. He went down as if he’d been shot

@CfcJosephb: Same old Wrexham, always cheating

@NottsCountyZone: Karma will catch up to Mullin eventually. 🐀

@WrexhamAFC4: Inject the hate in this directly into my veins 💉 . Up the rich as fuck, cheating, diving and paying those sweet dollars to referees reds 🔴⚪️

@WillB_2003: He’s better than this is Mullin, that’s what frustrates me the most, he’s a ridiculously good footballer but does unnecessary things like this.

@adam1862_: Investigation is needed. It is so obvious that there is a bias towards Wrexham.

@ham_ezz: Not being funny but Wrexham have to be paying the refs or something, the amount of soft penalties and last minute winners they’ve had this season isn’t right at all. Paul Mullin’s a bad knobhead as well
