Patrick Bamford speaks on abuse, Leeds fans turning up at his house and deactivating Twitter

Patrick Bamford speaks on receiving abuse, Leeds fans turning up at his house and deactivating his Twitter as threats were made to his family.

The 30 year old Leeds player, who has come into some form of late, says fans of his own club turned up outside his house after he missed a penalty against Newcastle in May 2023.

Bamford added that he had to deactivate his Twitter account a few months prior to the incident because abuse he received became so bad that threats were also made to his family and little girl.

Leeds suffered a setback in their game against Newcastle on the 13th of May, Bamford seeing his spot kick saved that could have given them a 2-0 lead at Elland Road.

Newcastle took advantage and went 2-1 up, with Callum Wilson converting two penalties.

However, Leeds managed to salvage a point when Rasmus Kristensen scored a late equaliser.

Leeds were relegated from the Premier League after defeats against West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, having spent three seasons back in the top flight.

Bamford spoke on an incident via the BBC’s My Mate’s A Footballer podcast, where he revealed that after the game against Newcastle, his partner informed him that there were people outside their house for around “20 minutes”.

ā€œAs I turn into the drive to get in, I can’t even get to the gate, there’s two cars blocking it,ā€ Bamford said.

ā€œThey had their windows open. I went to put my window down and as I did, they put their windows open and just stared at me. Then the gate opened because my dad had opened it and they drove off.

ā€œI think it was a culmination of the last few weeks. I took a lot of flak for it, rightly or wrongly. The way they expressed it was crazy.ā€

Bamford adds that his partner was made to feel unsafe in their own home because of the incident and he had to call on his personal sports psychologist for support.

ā€œI rang him (Bamford’s sports psychologist) literally straight after that happened,ā€ Bamford continued. ā€œHe was like, ā€˜How do you feel?’

ā€œI said, ā€˜I’m not upset about the abuse, I’m angry that someone’s come to the house and done that’. The club were good, they ended up putting security on the house for the whole night.

ā€œI was like, ā€˜How do I explain to Michaela — don’t worry, everything’s safe’, even though we’re sitting there with security and a security dog outside the house all night.ā€

The day after the Newcastle game, Leeds issued a statement which condemned online abuse and threats made about Bamford.

The player still remains loyal to the club, and has so far scored four goals in 23 appearances this season for the Championship promotion hopefuls.

This is how fans reacted as Patrick Bamford speaks on abuse, Leeds fans turning up at his house and deactivating Twitter…

@Yeadon1: Honestly, the way our fan base systematically targets our own players is sickening. I would never expect player loyalty when I see how our fans treat Bamford, Meslier etc

@JSloan1995: Fair dues for Pat sticking around, busting his balls to get back into the side and then delivering for us after all that. His mentality is top notch

@MattXLufc: Criticism is fair game, abuse and threats whether online or in person is a line crossed and individuals should be dealt with accordingly. To make a family feel unsafe in their own home because of what’s happened in a Sport… absolutely horrendous and a sad example

@DoctorT1992: Absolutely. I know many reached out to Paddy’s good lady and she did say that she appreciated the vast majority on here blocking the hate and help finish it. God knows why he still runs himself into the ground for us. Seems such a nice lad. No excuses.

@Kershaw444: Really poor this, a lot of people said Bamford should move on, I was one of them, think we and he needed a fresh challenge but that is as far as it should ever go, opinion

@Premierseafoods: It’s sad that what I always thought was just a weird online section of *fans* can actually be physical too. I could never ever explain my passion for Leeds enough but I’m still able to shrug off defeats & even relegations because I’m a grown up. Can’t get my head these adults.

@JuceeRob: Venting on Twitter is one thing, parking up outside someone’s house & threatening children is mental. People need to get a grip. #lufc

@MarkFletch117: Possibly explains his demeanour since then. Utterly obscene. I’m surprised he didn’t decide to leave after that.

@MathewForth: Genuinely baffles me that adults act like this over a game of football. I love Leeds as much as the next bloke, but it’s a game 🤣 you get wound up for a bit then get on with your life. It’s mad, and dreadful, that people would think to do this. Pleased he’s got his form back.

@ChrisneySG: Truly unacceptable behaviour by some so call ā€œfansā€! We are Leeds United ā€œMarching Togetherā€ up & down we are Leeds. Paddy been through so much, he was/is one of our hero to take us to PL, after all this treat he still with us šŸ’™šŸ’›šŸ¤

@iGerLynch: What is wrong with people. What kinda moron thinks this is okay. Idiots.

@ellandduck: Sick of the argument that Bamford shouldn’t be treated with respect because ‘sentimentality has no place in football’. If the outcome of a match upsets you so viscerally that you end up on a player’s doorstep, then you’ve got no business calling anyone else sentimental. #lufc

@ossett_white: What gives someone the right to turn up at another persons house to tell them they are šŸ’© at their Job? 😳!! Proud to be a #LUFC fan however this is embarrassing!! Who ever did this I would suggest that football & LUFC isn’t for you.

@mjgarrity72: Unacceptable and uncalled for – just a scapegoat for how bad last season was

@RealJaffa_: It’s absolutely disgraceful this. Our fan base is terribly reactionary at times. Bamfords goals got us up and got us a great first year in the prem. people seem to forget that.

@SJB_upnorth: Absolutely embarrassing. Disgusting. No excuse. Marching on Together isn’t it?

@Wakefield90: We all love the football club and want success on the pitch but fucking hell, this is so far beyond the line of acceptable. Criticism in the ground, amongst friends over a pint, all fine. But don’t abuse players in person or do shit like this… What’s wrong with people?

@JoshFink24: Wouldn’t of even blamed him if he wanted to leave after that, never mind put shirt back on. I personally wouldn’t give a fuck anymore. Fanbase is riddled with mongs

@MattXLufc: Shows you what kind of person @Patrick_Bamford is that he’s still here, still engages with us and celebrates with us. I’m sure it would’ve been easy to just leave for a fresh start. Thankfully seems to realise it’s only a few mindless idiots and doesn’t reflect our true fans.

@JasonSargeson: Every single person that made it personal towards Bamford is part of the problem @LUFC nobody comes on here if you had a shit day at work slagging you off do they!
