Oliver Glasner calls for greater refereeing consistency after baffling decisions made

Oliver Glasner calls for greater refereeing consistency after baffling decisions made in the draw between Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

The Palace boss expressed his frustration, stemming from a controversial calls by referee Sam Barrott, who sent off Palace’s Chris Richards for a second yellow card but spared Bournemouth’s Alex Scott a similar punishment for a comparable incident involving a push on Ismaila Sarr.

Glasner highlighted that the fourth official deemed Scott’s action insufficient for a second yellow, yet Richards was dismissed.

This inconsistency, Glasner noted, was felt by the entire Palace dressing room, including players and staff. The incident has fuelled broader discussions about refereeing standards in the Premier League, with Glasner’s comments reflecting a call for fairer and more uniform decision-making.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC MOTD: “I was absolutely pleased with this point especially the way the game was going and conceding 10 goals in the previous two games. To have to play for 50 minutes with one player less, it’s a great clean sheet.”

On Chris Richards’ red card: “For me it’s how you lead the game and consistency. It’s either two red cards – one for Chris Richards and one for Alex Scott. Or it’s no red cards at all. When you don’t show a second yellow for Scott, you don’t show a second yellow for Richards. This what I felt and everyone felt in the stadium. But you have to deal with situation and it was a great team effort in the game.”

On facing Arsenal on Wednesday and then an FA Cup semi-final next weekend: “I didn’t think about the Arsenal game until now. It’s clear Chris Richards will not be available [against Arsenal] but we will be ready. It’s not the easiest game away but we will go there like always – don’t present them with three points and waving the white flag. We’ll have a competitive team at the Emirates and three days later at Wembley.”

He added, per London News Online: “We need consistency.“It’s either two red cards or no red card. The fourth official told me it was not enough for Scott to be sent off.

“I think that means it’s not enough for Chris Richards to pick up a second yellow. But the referee decided it.

“It makes no sense to talk about it, but we were just talking at half-time about what we have to do in the second half. I was a player for many years, but it’s really difficult to deal with this situation.

“That’s why I’m really pleased with what the players showed today.”

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC MOTD: “Before the game it wouldn’t have been a bad point but considering we were playing against 10 for more than 45 minutes it’s disappointing.

“We didn’t have the creativity and you have to be super creative or shoot from very far. We couldn’t find the chances.

“It feels like a missed opportunity. Two more points would have been lovely for us. But we are still in the fight [for Europe]. We have to keep going. We have five games remaining and are in the fight.”

On Bournemouth achieving a new club record Premier League points tally: “We still have five games to add more points.”

On whether Alex Scott should have been sent-off after a foul while on a yellow card: “No, I don’t think so.”

On reports of a new contract: “No, Bill [Foley] is coming to the Manchester United game next week. We’ll talk but nothing special.”

Keith Hackett slammed referee Samuel Barrott for an “unacceptable level of inconsistency” after showing Crystal Palace’s Chris Richards a red card against Bournemouth.

Having seen the footage, ex-PGMOL chief Hackett said to Football Insider:

“Sadly, this referee, who has performed well throughout the season, has demonstrated an unacceptable level of inconsistency.

“If he believes that this challenge warranted a second yellow, then so did the first [Scott’s foul on Sarr].

“On this one, that resulted in a second yellow, the forward went to ground too easily, and the actions of running towards the referee are unacceptable.

“A soft second yellow.”

Twitter users reacted as Oliver Glasner calls for greater refereeing consistency after baffling decisions made…

@HLTCO: Is it any wonder supporters have little faith in officials? An astounding lack of consistency.

@TAIEpodcast: Genuinely…. Compared to the standard of football. The Premier League has the WORST officials in the world. Every week it’s clanger after clanger. No wonder the Palace players were fuming. 😡

@MJLbirder: He’s the one that blew up for Eze’s goal bound free-kick at Brentford and also booked Eze for diving against Everton when replays show it should have been a penalty. Barrott’s place of birth: Brighton.

@lindop_ryan: Don’t think any of them should be second yellow cards, but how the referee feels the first one isn’t a second yellow but then Richards’ is .. is beyond me 🙄 We probably have the worst referring standards of all 5 major European leagues

@Bullens_Blue: He’s the rising star in the ranks too, just shows how bad they all are.

@CPFC_GEO: no idea how the best league in the world has by far the worst officials but it is what it is

@gooner145: I don’t think any of them were worth a 2nd yellow. The problem is he made it a problem for himself for giving one of them when it didn’t warrant it.

@cpfcjc: Wow i thought it was bad in real time but looking at this makes it even worse!

@JMH292414: Absolutely disgusting, the ref ruined the game, Scott should have gone off too, the @premierleague has by far the worst officials in the world.

@AIGAMING611: Honestly no words to describe how crap the officiating was today and we should be expecting a big apology from PGMOL but we won’t will we

@Dingle8tor: Absolute fucking joke. Was out of his league today. Completely ruined the match.
