Oldham re-appoint manager hours after fans vent fury at players following loss at Harrogate

Oldham Athletic have chosen to re-appoint an old manager of theirs just hours after fans vent fury at players following a loss at Harrogate.

Jack Muldoon hit a superb hat-trick as the Sulphurites ended a run of four successive league defeats with a home victory against bottom of the table Oldham.

Muldoon’s goals, which took the 32-year-old striker’s season tally into double figures, also left the troubled Latics without a win in eight league matches, making it their worst run since August 2018.

The scoring opened on the 17th minute when Muldoon played the ball out to Lewis Page on the left flank and then raced into the six-yard box to get on the end of the full-back’s cross.

Oldham, have failed to find a first half league goal away from home all season, and that run extended after home keeper Mark Oxley stormed out of his goal to palm away Dylan Bahamboula’s effort.

Luke Armstrong fluffed many chances to double his side’s lead, so it was down to Muldoon to do so after to stealing possession when Callum Whelan was put under pressure in his own half by Brahima Diarra and found himself through on goal before calmly finding Leutwiler’s bottom-right corner.

Muldoon popped up again on the 89th minute, thumping an edge-of-the-box strike into Leutwiler’s top-left corner following Armstrong’s square pass to seal the 3-0 win.

And after the game, Oldham fans made their feelings known, with video footage showing just how ‘toxic’ it got as the players made their way into the tunnel…

Late on Saturday night, it was confirmed that John Sheridan has agreed to return as Oldham Athletic head coach for his sixth stint in charge of the club.

The League Two side, seven points adrift of safety, have brought back the 57-year-old, who has twice guided the club to survival, and was last in charge at Boundary Park five years ago.

Interim boss Selim Benachour replaced Keith Curle in November, but leaves the job with no league wins since his promotion from being an academy coach.

Twitter users reacted as Oldham re-appoint manager John Sheridan just hours after fans vent fury at players after the loss at Harrogate…

ON JOHN SHERIDAN:

@joerosswilliams: We never did have a chance to thank John for his services last season, March 12th will be fun!

@granny_flanny: I went to the match today, and felt truly upset about the plight of our club. Now I’m just a mess!!!! He may not manage to save us, but God bless John Sheridan for wanting to even try!!!!

@ChrisJStott19: Now thats more like it, now get some players in and to all fans, pack the park on Saturday and support each and every player all the way. To all players, run through brick walls and the fans will back you all day long

@RaySproston: Good luck John turn that club round, its a proper club

@Niall_pafc: Go on Sheridan you did it for the Green Army in League Two a few times now go help the Oldham fans out they need it. Good Luck guys hope you stay up

@simon_maisey: Talk about kicking a club while their down

@Robbaker87: First relegation of the season confirmed

@WafcHugh: If you guys weren’t screwed before, you’re definitely screwed now

@mrjacktanner: Enjoy National League next year

@joteddyuk: It beggars belief that this is seen as a positive thing by Oldham supporters. I suppose it’s a win win for Sheridan though, if they avoid relegation, he’ll be hailed as the saviour, if they go down, it’ll be blamed on the predecessor and owner.

@haydenbedwell2: From every Swindon fan… we feel for you and hope for the best for your club….

@OOCSwindonTown: March 12th can’t come soon enough

@rammylatic: Best news out of the club for a while that. The last roll of the dice is about to begin #oafc

ON FANS ANGRY AT PLAYERS:

@CraigPerkins17: Not even Non League yet….wait until you’re getting turned over at Woking and Maidenhead

@dan_snook: The lad’s doing it for free. FOR FREE. As it stands, we’re down, but if, and it’s a huge if, Shez can galvanise this shower of pub players to at worst be third bottom, I’ll take it. That’s the situation we’re in.

@tvs_los: Booooooo let me get my phone out… boooooooooo

@Mlabus5: Shouldn’t fans do the opposite to fight the drop. Players need support and not toxic abuse which will make things far worse.

@glees5150: WTF will this achieve? The blame lies with recruitment. If the players are not good enough, it isn’t their fault, and there is no need to do this to them.

@JoshJantas: there’s every need to do this to them, they don’t put any effort in at all, this is completely deserved

@sandylaner: Fear. It might be the best way of encouraging your team. Trounce Dale and you may be onto something. A hosepiping if they don’t.

@the_real_B1: Wow, I can remember it being this bad the year we went down. This is toxic

@Turkey_Twizzler: Really don’t get how this helps them fight the drop, just makes players not want to play even more

@kieranmcandrew: Hahahahahah fucking hell, if I didn’t laugh I’d cry. My club is the absolute pits but I wouldn’t change it for the world #oafc

@AndrewJNicholls: That’ll fire em up won’t it. Thick cunts, shouldn’t do that to your own players

@1rhysparsons: anyone wanna film it?

@666Jamiethomas: Imagine doing this to your players, absolutely disgusting.

@Kianjackhartley: This is the most embarrassing thing I’ve seen in a long time

@TheLeonKearney: They’re worse than we were in 2015 and that takes some going. Wow.

@HarlanBroadcast: Disgusting! These lads are the best players the club is gunna have until at least the Summer Window. The ‘fans’ want survival as we all do, but you’re not gunna get that by abusing the only players you have. The ownership needs sorting. But don’t do this…. they are on empty.

@JDunnWilson: Clearly dire straits at Oldham, but what does treating the players like this do? You can be disappointed, angry at the hierarchy. But if you want to beat the drop, there has to be some kind of faith put in the players. Voice your displeasure, but how is this going to help?

@KBizz1e: Been there and done that… and them fuckers laughed at us every step of the way…. I can’t wait till they go down.

@TRFCWill: Nice stuff. Same fans who will tweet Bahamboula all week about how they want him to have their kids and stuff. Strange bunch but happy to see them meltdown

@PerpignanFlyer: Oldham well and truly in a shambolic state and as a Tranmere fan it’s great to see after the shite they gave us when we went down. That national leagues hard to get out of they could be stuck there for a long time as well
