Oldham ‘in talks’ with ex-Everton, West Ham, Sheffield United player over manager’s job

Oldham Athletic are reportedly ‘in talks’ with ex-Everton, West Ham, Sheffield United player David Unsworth over the manager’s job.

This was confirmed by reliable journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has worked for the Press Association, Sky Sports, ESPN and others across three decades in the industry.

He claims the ex-Everton academy boss is in advanced talks to be the new Latics manager, with negotiations progressing for the Goodison legend to replace John Sheridan who is to part company after this weekend’s match.

FootyInsider add Unsworth is keen to take on the role and a full agreement could be in place within the coming days.

Everton confirmed earlier this year (12 April) that Unsworth was leaving his role in the summer to pursue his ambitions of becoming a manager.

The 48-year-old went back to the club in 2013 as assistant manager of the Under-23s before working his way up to become academy director and manager of the Under-23s.

The likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tom Davies and Anthony Gordon all emerged from the youth team into Everton’s first team during Unsworth’s time in charge.

He also had two interim spells as manager of the first team where he won three of nine games.

As a player, Unsworth played as a centre-back or left-back from 1991 until 2009 and is best remembered for his time at Everton during the 1990s, where he was part of their FA Cup-winning team of 1995 and acquired the nickname “Rhino”. He earned one full England cap in 1995. He also played in the Premier League for West Ham United, Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic, and in the Football League for Ipswich Town, Burnley and Huddersfield Town.

After retiring, he moved into coaching with Preston where he was twice appointed caretaker manager. He returned to Everton in September 2013 as assistant to Everton U21s head coach Alan Stubbs, and succeeded him in 2014. He was twice named caretaker manager of the club in 2016 and 2017.

Fans reacted as reports claim Oldham are ‘in talks’ with the ex-Everton, West Ham, Sheffield United player over the manager’s job…

@loud_MM91: Jesus christ 😫

@WhitworthYed: Got to give him a chance.

@loud_MM91: I’ll definitely give him a chance and get behind him if he’s hired, but very underwhelming. I just want someone who’s had success in non league

@foreverblue901: I’d prefer Unsworth or Philliskirk if going with a unproven manager. I’d also prefer Bunn over Holden.

@Wozz77: I’d take Greame Alexander or Nigel Adkins if we are going down the path of experienced managers who have already won promotions, Unsworth would be a gamble but his connections at Everton may see some decent young uns coming on loan..

@BillEvram: Give it to Rhino

@mattwaring24: Did very well for our under 23s, looked a little out of his depth when he took over the first team as caretaker, but then we were a raging hot mess. Good lad though, and will give youth a good chance.

@BillEvram: Don’t know how he’d even work in the modern game, he’s a hoofball manager and he’s not even good at that. And he can’t develop players at all.

@NGFC83: David Unsworth looks alot better candidate when put in the same sentence as Keith Hill and Phil Brown #oafc

@NGFC83: Something about David Unsworth doesnt feel right. #oafc

@PeterFi22102940: A bit David Dunn….

@T145Alex: He’s not inspiring

@Frazz1978: Not for me either..

@Tha3Monkeys: Better than Bunn

@oafc19: David Unsworth been linked with multiple football league jobs yet people are moaning? #oafc

@niklitwinenko: David Unsworth FFS 🤦🏻‍♂️. Let’s not go down the Everton link unless it’s Big Dunc #oafc

@andydearden1964: Before you judge watch Everton u23 side play, tactics ect

@DukeyD23: Mate you’re newly relegated and currently sitting on 8 points after 8 games, 2 points above the relegation zone, I think you’d take Prince Andrew at this moment in time 😂😂

@Hurrikeen: Absolutely don’t want David Unsworth. My choice would be Jonathan Greening. #oafc

@AndyCiderMan: I am struggling to see any basis for disliking the idea of unsworth. Not sure what people expect #oafc
