Notts County and their manager has been mocked by fans on social media after losing their League Two playoff semi final 2nd leg to Wimbledon.
The Wombles will play Walsall – who beat Chesterfield – at Wembley Stadium for a place in League One on the 26th of May.
Josh Neufville’s first-half lob was worthy of winning most games, while the hard work was done in the first leg.
Riley Harbottle’s header gave them a slender advantage which was helped by some brilliant defending and fine keeping from Owen Goodman.
“A moment of magic, a moment of inspiration!” 🪄

Wimbledon striker Matty Stevens told Sky Sports: “Wimbledon v Walsall at Wembley – that sounds unbelievable.
“We know they’re a very good team but we believe in ourselves and hopefully can go there and win.”
Stevens hailed Josh Neufville’s ‘unbelievable finish’ for the Dons winner and added: “We know what Josh can do. He pops up with the odd goal and today it was big one.”
He also praised defender Joe Lewis, adding: “In my opinion he’s the best centre half in the league, he’s a top player.”
AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson told Sky Sports: “We’ve made ourselves a tough nut to crack.
“They had to make two enforced changes but they didn’t do too much different. we knew they would come and put it on us.
“We knew if we kept a clean sheet we’d be through, though we probably should have won by more in the end.
“To get the goal when we did really helped because they started well. I knew we’d have to suffer at times.”
Monday 26, May will be Jackson’s first time managing at Wembley and he said: “It’s unbelievable. This club’s got a rich affiliation with Wembley. We want to write our own chapter.
“I never played at Wembley – one thing I really regretted when I retired. To get the opportunity to lead this team out is really special for me.
“We have to envoy these moments, but we haven’t done anything yet.”
Josh Neufville said to Sky Sports:
“[The goal] is something we were working on in the week. We saw we could get in behind in the last game.
“We tried to gamble and then if you get in that position you’ve got to be composed.”
Notts County manager Stuart Maynard speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham: “I’m devastated for the fans. They were incredible today.
They have been incredible all season.
It’s very tough. i thought we started bright around the edge of their box.
We conceded a very sloppy goal. You can’t give a team like Wimbledon’s quality a leg up.
it’s defensively poor from us as a group. We made it an uphill battle.”
Notts County captain Matt Palmer on BBC Radio Nottingham: “We started really well. It was sort of the story of both legs – the goal has come out of nothing.
“We had to come here and score goals. Over the two legs, it has not gone in for us.
“I’m not sure why (our form tailed off towards the end of the season). We come in and work hard every day.
“At the start of the season, the aim was to get promoted. We are disappointed.
“The players are going to grow from it.”
Mark Stallard (Former Notts County striker on BBC Radio Nottingham): Wimbledon have been too good.
There could be 25 minutes of added time and you still wouldn’t have genuine belief that Notts County could score.
It is disappointing. I’m not saying they haven’t tried, I’m not saying their hands haven’t been tied without David McGoldrick and Alassana Jatta, but they have posed no real threat.
It’s looked a little bit like a lower league team playing a higher league team.
All credit to Wimbledon. They got the job done. They were clinical. They have not looked a brilliant team, but they looked a solid game.
Over the two games, Notts County haven’t scored a goal.
The game today could have had a bigger margin.
Chris Peddy (BBC Sport at the Cherry Red Records Stadium): There couldn’t be more of a contrast between the two ends of the ground now – the AFC Wimbledon fans at one end are bouncing while the reality of the result is settling in for the away fans.
Dons fans sing “We’re going to Wembley”, the stadium announcer has asked all fans to stay in the seats at full time.
We’ll see how that goes…
Aaron Paul (BBC Radio 5 Live at the Cherry Red Records Stadium): Wimbledon will head to the national stadium.
Wombley Park, they will call it.
It was the most gorgeous strike from Josh Neufville that won this.
In the absence of David McGoldrick and Alassana Jatta for Notts County, keeper Alex Bass pulled off some great stops in the second half, particularly from Matty Stevens.
Lyle Taylor (Former Wimbledon striker on BBC Radio 5 Live): It was such a good atmosphere.
Wimbledon fans have been so, so good. The Notts County fans have been brilliant, really noisy.
Owen Goodman has had very little to do in Wimbledon’s goal. His defence have been exceptional.
It is brilliant to see this club going back to Wembley and hopefully back to where they belong.
As mentioned, Notts County and their manager were mocked by fans online after losing their playoff semi final to Wimbledon…
@BCAFCBH: Get him sacked now, you lot deserve much better 👍
@WLodge_39: Matty Platt said he joined #notts because they were the team most likely to go places. Anyone know where they’re off? #bcafc
@Noahrobo1903: First Harry Lewis now Matty Platt who moved gave it biggun about being promoted with their new clubs only for one of them to stay in league 2 and the other to go down to the national league. And for us to go up 🤣 #bcafc
