Northampton appeal red shown to Aaron McGowan with fans dismayed at ‘joke decision’ from referee

Northampton appeal red card shown to Aaron McGowan with fans dismayed at the ‘joke decision’ from referee Ross Joyce on Saturday.

McGowan was removed from the game for ‘violent conduct’, according to the report of the referee, yet looking back at the video, it’s hard to see where that happened.

The club have since appealed against the red card. This incident was seen by thousands of people on social media. McGowan and Jack Roles in a tangle while waiting for a throw in to play out.

There appeared to be hardly any contact between the two with Roles falling to the ground holding his face and leg, with his teammates applauding the referee’s decision to send off after Ross Joyce consulted with his linesman. Roles needed treatment but was fine to carry on. Shock.

Referee Ross Joyce spoke with his linesman, Roles getting required treatment, and carried on playing.

On Tuesday afternoon, the outcome of the appeal will be announced.

The hosts went on to win the League Two fixture as Jack Sowerby scored an impressive winner.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Northampton Town’s appeal against the red card shown to Aaron McGowan has been rejected by the FA.

McGowan was sent off in the second half of the 1-0 over Crawley Town for violent conduct.

Violent conduct is defined as:

When a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.

No reduction in the ban was agreed by the panel so McGowan must now serve a three match suspension for the incident which is shown below.

It is probably best that we, as a club, don’t comment further. We move on to Saturday.

“The linesman is only five yards away from it but I don’t really know what’s gone on there,” said Cobblers boss Jon Brady as per Northampton Chronicle and Echo.

“I have only had time a look back at our chances but that’s the one thing I haven’t seen back yet.

“Obviously we will have a look at the incident, review it and see what we think.”

“There was a little scuffle but it happens in football,” Brady added on the heated scenes that played out. “It’s just handbags and the referee got hold of it and I think it all calmed down.

“For me, personally, I felt they were trying to find a way to make something happen and the ref bought into it a bit.”

Meanwhile, Crawley boss Scott Lindsey thought his side should have been awarded a ‘clear penalty’.

“We didn’t start the game particularly well,” said Lindsey, as per Northampton Chronicle and Echo. “We looked like we were waiting to concede in the first-half and we never really threatened them.

“I thought we were lucky to come in at half-time 0-0 but I was pleased we did because it gave me an opportunity to get into the players and give them energy and confidence.

“Our second-half performance was better but there were moments where we didn’t defend well. They shouldn’t win the corner that leads to the goal and then he smashes it in from 25 yards. If he hits that another 25 times, he probably doesn’t score.

“I was disappointed with that and I thought we had a clear penalty. Jordon Mutch gets pulled down at the far post. There’s a hand around his neck, he’s pulled to the floor and the referee is in a good position but he doesn’t give it. At the moment, luck is against us.

“I didn’t really see the red card incident but I did think the standard of the officiating was poor today. There was even a moment where the linesman flagged for offside from a goal-kick. I’ve never seen that at this level before.

“He missed a few things and it’s a clear penalty. I don’t understand why he hasn’t given it.”

This is what social media users said as Northampton appeal a red card shown to Aaron McGowan with fans dismayed at the ‘joke decision’ from the referee…

@ntfc2: @efl have no interest in fairness, just in backing terrible officials. Meanwhile cheats prosper

@Specky99: The question is – can they accept their mistake or will they support the ref no matter what.

@Stew2205: Question – is tickling someone a red card offence?

@SeanNTFC: @EFL care to comment on this? The standard of officiating is at best, shocking.

@chogger5: The lad who goes down wants a retrospective 5 game ban only way to stop these cheats it’s getting ridiculous and embarrassing within the game now

@nosey_aintcha: It should’ve been the other way around. No fully grown goes down & rolls around like that. Embarrassing. Needs stamping out of the game.

@PaulEyre17: If this decisions not overturned gives players the opportunity to cheat and get players sent off for nothing, should look at this and send a warning to all would be cheats ban Rolls for 3 games. 1 of there fans said he did same in previous game Ref played on and he just got up 🤬

@stephen_dimmock: Even though I’m a Crawley fan, I have to agree with you on that opinion mate. I’d be amazed if your club doesn’t get that rescinded

@StewieB8: Thanks for sharing…….the officials are shocking

@James131006912: Never a red ref didn’t even see it

@95Parsonage: Can we get a collection going for @JackRoles_ recovery, could be out for a while 🥴🫣

@H86Andy: That’s embarrassing.

@WrestlingMonkey: @JackRoles_ and rolls and rolls and rolls…

@tomaswest1: @JackRoles_ even as a Crawley fan you’re an embarrassment

@adamssim: Roles stands on McGowan’s left foot just before all his nonsense. Crawley are on my list now. Hope they go down.

@villa_pogue: Unfortunately (as scandalous as the decision/play acting was) the powers-that-be are like the masons basically. They probably won’t rescind. As for the Crawley player a 5 game ban; number 10 an 8 game ban for applauding

@Limes_361: Player that went down needs a hefty ban

@james_e_bland: If @crawleytown had a shred of integrity, they’d support this appeal (and have a quiet word with their player). I won’t hold my breath.

@ConorJacksonRy1: Never a red, nearly cost us the game

@DarlisonArchie: Hope he never plays for us again shocking

@danp_89: Hang your head in shame @JackRoles_ , we want none of this at our club. A truly pathetic and embarrassing reaction.

@Mark_cobbler: No surprise if it doesn’t get overturned. That’s just the efl for you
