A non league team managed to win 19-0 and a league title after needing an 11-goal swing on the final day of the season Saturday afternoon.
Bristol Rovers was stealing the headlines over the weekend when they secured promotion to League One, but little does everyone know that the same happened at non league level and in astonishing fashion.
Joey Barton’s side leapfrogged Northampton Town into third place to seal a place in League One next season, but based on goals scored after winning 7-0 on the final day.
The Pirates – who were playing already relegated Scunthorpe United – had to win by five goals more than Northampton, who were at Barrow.
When Northampton went 3-0 up within 22 minutes, it looked at all over, though Josh Kay pulled one back for Barrow, in the 45th minute and with the scorelines 2-0 and 3-1 respectively to the promotion rivals, it meant Rovers needed a five-goal swing.
In the 53rd minute Bristol Rovers started piling in the goals. Northampton stopped and finished 3-1 winners. Bristol Rovers knew they’d have to win 7-0 – the last time they did that in the Football League was in 1964 plus they had never won a league game by more than seven goals in their 138-year history.
Anderson got them that all important seventh goal on 85 minutes, the pitch invasion started, game was delayed around 15 minutes, then they restarted, scoreline remained 7-0 and promotion was secured.
It’s easy to see why they dominate the headlines, however we feel it would be wrong to leave out another club who did similar.
Darlington Town of the Wearside League, needed an 11 goal swing to win the division, and they went and won 19-0, with Chester-Le-Street United, who had been top of the table for much of the season, only getting a 0-0 draw away to 5th place Wolviston. Cue jubilation…
