Non league player goes viral after scoring from inside his own half

Whickham FC’s Dale Burrell has gone viral this week after he channeled his inner David Beckham by scoring from inside his own half.

The midfielder’s stunner ended up helping his side come back from behind to beat Bishop Auckland 2-1 in the Northern League Cup on Wednesday.

It wasn’t the winning goal, but one to make the scoreline level again as former South Shields player Carl Finnigan won the ball back near the halfway line before Burrell, who spotted the keeper off his line, and struck the ball from inside his own half, which glided over the keeper’s head and into the net.

10 minutes later, Finnigan was sent off for an off the ball incident, one of which Whickham say the Bishop Auckland player made a meal out of.

It looked as though it was going to be a draw after playing out the 90 minutes, though Clark Kay swung the ball into the box from a free kick before it bounced and went into the far corner of the net.

As of writing this article (Friday 13th morning), the equaliser has had over 30,000 views and has featured on the likes of BBC Sport and no doubt Soccer AM come Saturday.

After checking out the goal, fans took to give their amazed reaction, though one user thinks he’s seen better this season – see what they had to say on the next page.
