Non league grassroots club devastated by suspected ‘arson’ with equipment destroyed

Non league grassroots club Anstey Nomads have been left devastated by a suspected ‘arson’ with all the equipment destroyed.

A container has been left beyond repair by the fire with everything inside it, items used to set up the pitches, corner flags, respect barriers and goal nets used Under 7 to Under 12 teams now severely damaged.

Anstey Nomads’s vice chairman, Conrad Logan, said the damage done by the fire could amount to around £5,000.

Fans are hoping the club can set up some sort of donation page to help with costs.

He said per Leicester Mercury: “It’s kids football, there was nothing of value to anyone else, apart from the football club, that’s [the container] burnt to the ground and needs to be cleared off site and removed for the next season.

They were first made aware of the incident on Monday (June 25) morning, though believe it took place the day before.

“We have over 50 teams in total now throughout the club, which has grown from 19 before Covid, with over 700 kids,” Conrad said.

“It’s disappointing, we are a growing club, it’s time and money that could have been spent elsewhere on other facilities.”

Conrad adds that he has held discussions with the FA (Football Association) to put in place 3G pitches on behalf of the club with it costing around £1 million, with Anstey Nomads and various partners having to around 30 per cent of that cost.

Leicestershire Police haven’t made any arrests regarding the suspected arson attack but wants anyone with information to get in contact with them.

@HartleyFC: Guys, absolutely devastating. Pretty sure the grassroots and local community and beyond will get behind you to help out. Just can’t understand the mentality to do this damage. Good luck to you finding the culprits and getting everything replaced.

@CoachRichLTJAFC: Gutted to see this, might be worth setting up a go fund me page to cover the lost items, I’d be happy to contribute as I’m sure many others will
