Chris Sutton caused outrage with non league clubs after compared the surface at Wembley Stadium to a “non league” surface.
It came during Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Tottenham last night with the pitch left looking worse for wear after Philadelphia Eagles had played against the Jacksonville Jaguars on it just a day earlier.
Many of the markings were visible you can see in the photos below…
The Wembley pitch looks like it’s straight out of an MLS game from 1997. pic.twitter.com/b5bgni8GYn

When commentating on the game, the former Celtic player said, “The pitch is like a non-league surface. It is what you’d expect to see on a Saturday afternoon.”
The non league community picked up on his comment and took to Twitter to flood his timeline with photos of their own pitch.
The Non League Paper vented out their anger…
This is such an average and lazy comment from @chris_sutton73 who clearly doesn’t watch Non-League football. So many pitches are of a very high order through the work of full-time professional groundsmen or lower down the pyramid by hard-working volunteers. pic.twitter.com/YxIkWOM7Fo

The paper didn’t like his ‘lighten up’ tweet…
Chris, don’t go down the ‘lighten up’ route. As soon as there’s a dodgy pitch in the higher leagues, pundits, many of them ex Premier League players, make throwaway comments like this and Non-League is the standard for the joke. Said in jest or not it’s an average comment.

Sutton wrote back with…
Stop taking yourself so seriously and getting offended…there are plenty of lovely pitches and plenty of rotten ones in non-league… in the Premier League the pitches are all immaculate… https://t.co/TU3Q9vGjyA

The Non League Paper ended it with, “Ok sorry. We’ll leave it there. Cheers Chris.”.
Non league clubs were frustrated with his comments and posted up plenty of photos of their immaculate pitches – we’ve rounded up what they’ve been saying, check it out on the next page.
