A non league club have confirmed that they are to relocate to another county for a second time within their 132 year history.
Truro City of the Southern League Premier Division South issued a club statement, revealing they will once again be leaving Trelew Road.
They have asked for their local supporters to stick by them after making the sad announcement that they will be temporarily moving their home 55 miles away to Devon.
Reports emerged this week stating that work has started on the site of Truro City’s stadium to have it replaced with a Lidl.
An agreement was made for the German supermarket to purchase the site, which will play a part of the £2.1 million to the much anticipated Stadium for Cornwall, which is a planned 10,000-seater stadium due for construction near Truro – however plans will be reduced to manage financial expectations.
Truro are to receive £600,000 from Lidl so the club can temporarily relocate to continue training and playing while the new stadium is completed.
The new Lidl is set to be a multi-million pound investment to the local area, with the store having a bakery, toilets and parking for cars and bikes.
Because of this, it now means that the club will be linking up and ground-sharing at Plymouth Parkway’s Bolitho Park with the hope of them returning back to Cornwall ready for the 2022/2023 season.
Another time that saw Truro leave their ground came in 2018 as they had to play their ‘home’ matches at Plainmoor of Torquay United.
On that occasion, the development company announced its plans to begin work on the project that year’s summer.
A few months later, it was revealed that the deal with Helical Retail, who were going to redevelop the Treyew Road site into a supermarket, had been called off.
That then paved the way for Truro to return back to Treyew Road in January 2019.
A statement from the club read on having to move again: “Truro City Football Club can today confirm that an agreement has been reached with JIL, the landowners of Treyew Road, for us to secure the section 106 monies in return for vacating our Treyew Road home.
“This is a historic deal for the football club which will secure the clubs long term future within the city of Truro.
“Plans are already underway to hopefully commence on a new multi-million-pound facility which is aimed to be completed in preparation for the start of the 2022/23 season.
“In the meantime, the club has agreed a groundshare with Western League side Plymouth Parkway. The necessary works will be commencing there shortly to ensure that their Bolitho Park ground is brought up to the Southern League ground grading requirements.
“Although this is a sad day to be leaving our home of so many years, we are confident this is the best way to secure the long-term future of Truro City Football Club.
“We ask all our loyal supporters to stay with us through the short-term adjustments as we progress to our permanent home in Truro.”
Right now, Truro’s season has been halted due to the Covid pandemic, with speculation running wild on if the 2020/21 campaign can be finished at all.
I think we speak for everyone in we simply can’t wait for work on the Stadium of Cornwall to finally go ahead.
