How does the National League table look with PPG? We have worked it out with doubts arising whether the season can continue or not.
Why is that you ask? This is due to clubs discovering that the expected bailout ‘grants’ are in fact going out as loans instead.
A senior league source claimed that they only started the 2020/21 campaign because they were promised a grant if we weren’t allowed to have crowds.
The National League, North and it’s South divisions went ahead in October after securing a £10m grant from the government, though that was for the first three months.
Funding for that grant has now run out and a total of £11m, part of the government’s £300m rescue package for sport, is available to clubs to claim as loans over the next three months
Even before this latest update on the grant, there was talk of potentially halting the season briefly so a discussion could be held to look at the position clubs are now in and when would be the best time to restart it again.
On Tuesday night, DCMS issued a statement: “Last year we brokered a unique deal between the National Lottery and the National League to provide a £10 million cash injection for these much-loved clubs. Since then we have announced a further £300 million investment to protect the immediate future of spectator sports, including another £11 million for National League clubs to help them finish the season.
“It is incorrect to suggest funding was ever promised as grants. Clubs in scope will be assessed for support on the same criteria as other professional clubs.”
We are hopeful the situation can get sorted about, but right now, chairmen and managers are even considering not playing games at the weekend.
