Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough has recently revealed who he thinks will impress in League One for the 2019/20 season and it seems one of those at the top end of the league won’t be his side, although he does he he can challenge them.
Respectively, it’s expected to be another had one for the Brewers with a fair few teams having a better chance, more capable and expected to be winning promotion from this division.
Last season, he guided them to 9th in the third tier of English football, just 10 points off the playoffs.
As well as that, he took them all the way to the League Cup semi finals, beating Shrewsbury, Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough along the way but then was hammered 10-0 on aggregate by Manchester City, losing 9-0 in the first leg.
Those sides are mentioned by the former England, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Manchester City and Burton player as well as an ex-Derby County and Sheffield United manager.
Find out who he thinks will impress in League One next season below…
Clough said, as quoted by Derby Telegraph: “You think Doncaster will try to take it on, Portsmouth certainly will, Ipswich coming down will fancy their chances.
“Bolton will start with a 12-point deduction, Rotherham are going to be strong because they will keep the same sort of squad.
“So I would say straightaway you’ve got Portsmouth, Rotherham, Ipswich and Doncaster and Peterborough – I was very impressed with them the last day of the season .
“I hope we can be up there challenging with them, but it’s going to be a strong division again.
“Tranmere are just coming up from the Conference, that’s the momentum thing again.”
“The one I wouldn’t rule out as well is Lincoln, in terms of going for it – they’ve got the financial clout and having seen what Luton have done, I think they will fancy their chances of doing that”.
These all sounds about right, a lot of football fans would suggest the teams he’s gone for, it is also on par with what the bookies are saying. However, he has not mentioned playoff finalists Sunderland for promotion or being up there. Genuinely forgotten or does he think they won’t be up there?
