Newport’s Kevin Ellison reveals celebration plans – plots revenge over Morecambe’s Derek Adams

Newport’s Kevin Ellison reveals his celebration plans and plots revenge over Morecambe’s Derek Adams ahead of when they meet again.

42 year old Kevin Ellison believes he is ‘in Morecambe’s heads’ ahead of next Bank Holiday Monday’s League Two playoff final – and the veteran is ready for another in front of Derek Adams.

On Sunday, he became the oldest player to feature in the playoffs and then the oldest player to score in the playoffs with a wonder strike at Forest Green Rovers.

That helped the Exiles level a dramatic tie at the New Lawn before they went ahead through Joss Labadie, were pegged back by Jamille Matt and then earned a place at Wembley thanks to Nicky Maynard’s strike with two minutes of extra time left.

County are now set take on the Shrimps for a place in League One – with Morecambe legend Ellison hoping for the last laugh against his former club.

The veteran, who made 391 appearances and scored 88 goals for the club between 2011 and 2020, was left out and dropped by manager Adams.

He was released last summer and then signed a one-year deal with County, a side he used to torment.

“If I could have picked a team to play in the final it would have been them because of my past with them but it’s about Newport County, not about Kevin Ellison,” he said.

“But I know that they are going to fear me a bit like Newport did. That’s not an ego thing, I am in their heads.

“Hopefully that can play a part and take the pressure of our lads; I’ll get a bit of pressure and some stick but if that helps the lads, so be it. I am going there to win for Newport County.”

Ellison scored a goal when the sides met in Lancashire in March and went viral with his celebration, shouting at Adams face.

After being made to train on his own by Adams, he raced to celebrate in front of the Scot in the home dugout.

The Morecambe boss’ decision to move Ellison on has been vindicated by their remarkable season yet it was the manner of the exit, being “disrespected”, that hurt the veteran.

“Maybe people will say it was written in the stars. I was quite happy with it as you could see from my celebration,” said Ellison.

“The way Derek Adams treated me was disrespectful, so why not. I’m glad Newport got the result and I owed them one.

“Newport County put food on the table for me and my kids so that’s where my loyalties lie.”

“I’m just sorry it didn’t happen in the home game as well because it would have been nice to do it in both fixtures against them,” he said.

“I knew something was going to happen. I was more than happy with my celebration, I don’t care what anyone says. He disrespected me, I don’t like him, that’s how it goes.”

Ellison was put in on goal when Nicky Maynard worked the ball to him on the left to leave the midfielder thinking: “Home dugout, that’s all.

“It was the way he went about saying things. If he had been honest enough, and man enough, to tell me ‘I don’t fancy you, you’re 41, go and find a club’, I’d have respected him for that.

“But he didn’t. He did things behind my back, but it came back to bite him on Saturday, didn’t it?”

Three weeks ago, police had to investigate after Newport County reported social media abuse aimed at midfielder Kevin Ellison.

Newport boss Mike Flynn came off social media earlier this season thanks in part to abusive messages received over some of his selection decisions, and was scathing of the latest abuse directed at one of his players.

“It’s disgusting, Kevin Ellison had something the other night that has been dealt with. That’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Flynn said.

“Some of the things that I have seen are disgusting and people need to be made accountable for what they think is acceptable. It’s an absolute disgrace what people get away with.

“It’s fine to criticise a performance or a result but nobody has the right to throw about abuse. Personal abuse is wrong and needs to be stopped.

“It’s so much easier to put negative things out there and people seem to get off on it.”

Gwent Police confirmed it had “received a call reporting concerns about a social media message sent directly to a Newport County AFC player on Wednesday, 28 April”.

Temporary assistant chief constable Roberts added: “Gwent Police is dedicated to tackling all forms of threatening behaviour and abuse that is targeted towards anyone, including those that take place online.

“We’re committed to ensuring our communities are safe places and welcoming for all, and that no-one should have to fear harm or abuse in their personal or professional lives.

“Anyone with any information which could assist the investigation is asked to call us on 101.”
