Newcastle fans divide reaction with Nick Pope banner; Spurs make U-turn on banning Cyprus flag

Newcastle fans divide reaction with a photo of the Nick Pope ‘dope’ banner while Spurs make a rapid U-turn on banning a Cyprus flag.

Alex Cramb uploaded a picture via Twitter, of a group of lads holding up a banner which read ‘I like Nick Pope, Nick Pope smokes dope.’

However, while it as left many laughing, others weren’t too impressed by it and some suggested even Nick Pope himself probably wouldn’t like it. Nonetheless, it’s still doing the rounds online.

This comes in the same week Tottenham perform a U-turn on their decision to ban a long-standing flag from their stadium, 64 minutes after fans vented their anger at the move.

Tottenham fans were furious when the Premier League club informed them that the flag of Spurs Cyprus had been banned from being displayed at home matches due to its “political” undertones.

The Cypriot flag depicts the shape of the island against a white background. Two olive branches are added to signify peace between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots.

Athos, Alex, and Chris Kyriacou, who took the flag to away matches at home and abroad, called the move nonsense and accused Spurs discrimination.

Their statement read: “Spurs have informed us that we are no longer allowed to bring the Spurs Cyprus Flag into the stadium anymore and that it is permanently banned from being brought inside.

“The reason they gave us is that the flag is ‘a political’ flag and political flags are not permitted inside the stadium.

“This reason is complete and utter nonsense. The Cyprus flag is 100% NOT a political flag. We have had this flag up for 15+ years… and not had a single problem. Now all of a sudden it’s ‘a political’ flag and is no longer allowed inside.

“We have been part of the furniture for years and many fans describe the flag as “iconic”. Everyone loves it. No one has a problem with the flag.

“This is discrimination and we are truly hurt by the treatment of the club, they are sucking the life out of us.”

After posting the statement online by @SpursCyprusFlag just over an hour later, the group confirmed that they had lifted the ban following discussions with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust.

A petition was started by supporters to “Get the Spurs Cyprus Flag Back at Tottenham” and received 463 signatures before the club intervened.

This is what social media had to say as Newcastle fans divide reaction with their Nick Pope banner; while Spurs make a U-turn on banning the Cyprus flag…

ON TOTTENHAM

@WeRTottenhamTV: Great news! Quick turnaround

@HollieAgombar: The state of our club!

@StevnBentn: When I walked through the tunnel at White Hart Lane, the first thing to catch my eye when looking up from the pitch was this flag. It is disgraceful to see a club I support shut out supporters like this. The reasons for this board to go increase more and more

@SeanDavid1989: Not a Spurs fan, but have strong ties to Cyp. I always keep an eye out for the flag and was always proud to see a part of a community if love (Cyprus, not Spurs 😉) here in the UK. Shameful by the club.

@thfcell: this is ridiculous omg

@Gingeryid81: Holy shit!! As if the club wasn’t getting further away from the fans they do this. Levy is an absolute stain

@TalkingTHFC: This is really shocking to hear and very disappointing from the club. A piece of the furniture across WHL and THS as you say. If there’s anything we can do to support, please do ask.

@LewisTHFC_: The board discriminating against our own supporters is truly a new low

@RyanHeatly: Absolute disgrace. Just look through many of the iconic photos of the stadium(s) over the last 15 years and you’ll find it in 90% of them.

@jamleeroberts: Absolutely ridiculous @SpursOfficial. What the f*ck is wrong with this football club?! Do you just want tourists in the stadium and not real fans?

@tbasquesthfc: It’s infuriating. This represents a big portion of our fanbase. We have many Cypriots who support our club. And now the club wants to throw it away. Daniel Levy is disgusting. Simple as.

@kaneszn1: Absolute disgrace! Cyprus is a part of EU.

@BradWright1193: #ENICOut #LevyOut sick of the scum! all they care about is money… lets be realistic they would rather have a tourist in your seat than a fan!!

@SpursShane_: Absolutely disgraceful @SpursOfficial, you do not deserve the loyalty you get from the fans, when all you do is consistently shit on them. Shame on you

@steelej27: Disgusting treatment from Spurs here, the flag is part of the furniture! No doubt some corporate complained 💤

@LewisTHFC_: What a pathetic waste of oxygen our board truly are
