National League disappoints fans and Wrexham over playoff final date and venue

The National League disappoints fans and Wrexham over their the playoff final date and venue officially confirmed on Monday.

The Welsh outfit are left annoyed by the fact that their supporters face a potential choice of either watching them in the National League playoff final or watching Wales attempt to reach the 2022 World Cup.

Wrexham currently sit second in the standings and should they fail to catch Stockport, they could potentially be one of the finalists in the promotion final at London Stadium on Sunday the 5th of June, which is the same days as Wales playing host to either Scotland or Ukraine in their World Cup playoff final.

WREXHAM STATEMENT:

The Vanarama National League Play-Off Final will take place at the London Stadium at 3pm on Sunday June 5.

The Club, like the FAW had asked that every effort be made to see if a clash with Wales’ World Cup qualifier against Scotland or Ukraine could be avoided. While the kick-off times are different, the reality is that fans will have to make a choice between which of the games they want to watch live, in person.

We are aware that the representations were taken seriously, and the decision taken by the National League was simply down to the lack of any alternative date or stadium to host the game.

The date for the National League play-off game was announced at the start of the season and it couldn’t have been envisaged that a World Cup play-off game would need to be scheduled on the same day.

The disappointment of the potential clash is shared by everyone, and should the Club compete in the National League Play-Off Final, we hope that it becomes a momentous and memorable day for football in Wales.

NATIONAL LEAGUE STATEMENT:

The Vanarama National League are delighted to announce the venue and date for June’s Promotion Final.

The London Stadium will host the showpiece finale, with a precious place in the EFL on the line this summer.

The two finalists will collide on Sunday, June 5, kick-off 3pm.

The season-ending game will of course be broadcast live and exclusively on BT Sport, the National League’s proud long-term partner.

The final stays in the capital at the near 60,000 capacity venue.

Vanarama National League Chairman Jack Pearce stated the venue – which witnessed some truly spectacular and historic sporting moments ten years ago during the London 2012 Olympics – is the perfect fit for some more magic.

He said: “We are delighted to be working with London Stadium as our partner for this season’s finale.

The League General Manager Mark Ives added “It is a fantastic sporting arena with a rich history and very befitting of our showpiece Promotion Final.

“Whilst we don’t know who will get to the Promotion Final yet, what we can now promise is a stadium worthy of hosting such a huge game.

Graham Gilmore, CEO of London Stadium, said: “We are proud to be hosting the National League play-off final this year, with the contenders vying for that coveted place in the Football League. We have witnessed some truly epic matches at our venue this season and this match will be another one of those special occasions at London Stadium.”

Ives added: “Last season was a huge success and I expect an even better occasion this time around.

As mentioned, the National League disappoints fans and Wrexham over the playoff final date and venue, see what was said below…

@beardywxm: Turn off commenting cause they know no one’s happy, another example of the powers that be not considering the feelings and pockets of their membership, farcical.

@Shaymentillidie: And which bright spark came up with this one then?????

@JamesEstwood; Turned off replys to try hide how much of a shit show of a decision this is, if you’re making fans travel to London at least let them go Wembley!

@Penbedw: What exactly is the point of playing it at that recycled athletics stadium, where you need binoculars? Could you not find a proper football ground in the north of England? @TheVanaramaNL

@RyanPh8: Horrific. Up there with the worst grounds I’ve ever been as well

@dannyw_92: Turning off the comments says it all

@kingsmithy7: If you’re going to make people fork up to go to London, and least make it at Wembley.

@DPalmdog1: #TheVanarama @TheVanaramaNL I assume you looked at the teams in the play off positions and went for the stadium centrally located. Or maybe you picked a stadium that’d be a good day out for the suits and the prawn sandwich brigade.

@RossHeslop91: The fact they’ve muted replies speaks volumes. Shambles of an organisation. Please god @FCHTOnline get out of this shithole league this season

@RHUFCR: People at the top of football aren’t football people, their business people. What a joke.

@WeAreTheShaymen: Wonder why they’ve turned comments off
oh yes because it’s a terrible decision that fans from every club the league supposedly represent is against. @TheVanaramaNL #FCHT #WATS #Clueless@TheVanaramaNL

@adpeers: Probably should have been at the Etihad tbh, but another ground to tick off ☑. Wouldn’t care if it was played on the moon if it meant we got to to see Wrexham (hopefully) get promoted. Gota get there first aswell đŸ€žđŸ» #UTST

@brooks1985: You know they have fucked up when they turn off the replies đŸ€Ł

@AmbroseBarnaby: Silly decision when you see all the sides currently in contention for the Playoffs. Plenty of grounds all closer to the relevant sides and would make travel much cheaper and easier but once again the fans always come off worse. 𝓑𝓐

@formercoach79: Pandemic was on football without fans is nothing, restrictions lifted fxck the fans
..Wrexham, Halifax, Chesterfield, Notts County, Grimsby and Solihull in play off places currently. Jubilee weekend on a Sunday @TheVanaramaNL really looking after the fans

@Sparky027: @TheVanaramaNL @officialgtfc A terrible decision based on what logic? Plenty of adequate Northern/Midlands stadiums that could be used. Fleecing the loyal fans again! #norespect #UTM #GTFC

@youngkilshaw: Fair play @TheVanaramaNL, your decision has united fans of all clubs! Everyone thinks it’s a ludicrous, out of touch, clueless decision. No consideration to cost of living rises. Congratulations

@alexcoe_:
Jubilee Weekend = more cost to fans ✅
No team south of Birmingham in the play offs, play it in London anyway✅
Replies turned off from the backlash✅
National league at its best

@Adamnc01:
Wrexham 222 miles
Halifax 210 miles
Solihull 132 miles
Chesterfield 165 miles
Grimsby 184 miles
Notts County 140 miles
If you’re not gonna have it at Wembley, at least have somewhere which accommodates the clubs a bit better, ie King Power/ Villa Park
