Nathan Jones slams ‘really poor, not good enough’ Charlton side after suffering defeat to Leyton Orient in the Vertu Trophy.
Nathan Jones shared his disappointment as the Addicks bowed out of the EFL Trophy with a 2-0 loss at The Valley on Tuesday evening.
It took until stoppage time for the visitors to open the scoring, just as it looked to be finishing 0-0, two goals in quick succession came to send the O’s through.
NJ: “Thierry was good first-half. Josh Laq, for his full debit was excellent. Matty Godden showed glimpses. But apart from that, poor all over.” #cafc

NJ: “But we made nine changes. A lot of players who haven’t played. Potts, REG. People who haven’t played. That showed tonight because we were so far off it.”#cafc

NJ: “I’ve learned a lot tonight. The squad I’ve inherited, players I’ve inherited that, you know, you can’t change everything overnight. That’s proved today. I’ve learned a lot tonight.”#cafc

Speaking to CharltonTV post-game Jones said, “To say I’m disappointed is an understatement in terms of everything. We just weren’t good enough, anywhere near it, all over tonight.
“I’ve never coached a side that have had that many shots against them. I’ve played against Manchester City, and they had three shots, none on target. We played tonight against Leyton Orient and there must have been 16 or 17 shots, not good enough. I have learned a lot tonight.”
There were nine changes to the side which secured a point on the road at the weekend against Lincoln City, with Ashley Maynard-Brewer and Greg Docherty retaining their spots in the starting line-up.
Speaking on the opportunity to turn our focus to the league with games coming thick and fast this winter, Jones said, “The league is always more important, but we try to win as many games as we can.”
“We gambled tonight and made nine changes with people that haven’t played, we have learned a lot. That is the only thing we can do. It is tough when you play like you do, we were nowhere near good enough. That is not often that we have been able to say that and it is not often that I have been able to say that throughout my time. We weren’t good enough, we got exactly what we deserved tonight.”
The Addicks are back in league action at The Valley on Saturday for the visit of Mansfield Town.

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Nathan Jones slams his ‘really poor, not good enough’ Charlton side after defeat to Leyton Orient…
@GeorgeMurfet_: Can’t say we’ve learnt a lot tonight when no one’s surprised by it. Only thing we really learnt was that Dixon’s not ready for first team football. Brilliant
@MillerFred87032: Did the interviewer say we’ll try and take positives? Ask some proper questions
@a_baker1991: Now more than ever we need to get behind him – miracles don’t happened over night. He needs time, and those of you who think he’s had enough time need to look at @OfficialBWFC and @Pompey – the latter reaped rewards and for the former I believe it’s only a matter of time
@DaveSamways2: Ultimately we are what we are L1 side and no better than that. Tonight was a 2 bob game meaning nothing league far more important. Moans about some players that he’s brought in . Not concerned about the loss tonight it means nothing.
@Bazzer198197612: Again spot on, 9 changes some players coming back for mins of course it’s going to be disjointed performance, people moaning about the result most likey never went or even watched it so please let’s not pretend they care about the cup otherwise they would be there
@SaintMichael293: Constantly learning yet still going backwards.
@OrientFanTV: No tunnel celebration tonight lads, cheers
@HashtagOliverK: Absolutely shocking. Outclassed in every possible way tonight.
@JackCAFC_: a 39 year old darren pratley showed more fight in that game than any of our midfields have since august. embarrassing once again, no fight. not bothered one bit if jones isn’t in the technical area on saturday
@SteveK157DFC: He truly does speak a load of total BS. If he’s getting to mid-December in the season and he’s finally learning about the qualities (or lack thereof) of his squad that tells you everything you need to know about his abilities as a manager.
@kevingallaghe15: The whole club has become rotten. Dont want to sack another manager but the football being produced is dire!!! Something needs to change
@emreaygul00: Get that interviewer gone. Embarrassing. Ask him some proper questions. Absolute joke for years
@JamieBoxallYT: Front footed? Teams aren’t carving us open? Winning all our cup games? Clean sheets? Injuries? What tripe are we hearing tonight NJ? Major change needed. We’ve just conceded 25 shots at home to Leyton Orient and not looked dangerous even once. Pathetic. #CAFC
@JamieBoxallYT: Not even 30 seconds in, mentions the Man City game from 2 years ago, completely unprovoked 😂 yet again listing off past successes. It didn’t help him at Southampton and it’s certainly no help to us now. Really want to like him, but I’m finding it difficult. Got to start winning.
@Mattyclarkcafc: I’ll just re post the same comments from last Tuesday. When they sack Jones sack Terry as well as it seems he’s scared to ask proper questions. Can’t wait for Saturday though 🤞🏻🙏
@Stephen29235285: In the words of Lynsey De Paul were are we ROCK BOTTOM. Can it get any worse? Saturday at home goodness knows what formation what starting x11 what tactics he will deploy.
@FULLERK88: If we lose Saturday and they don’t sack him after, it will be a repeat mistake from Appleton and fans will turn on the board and ownership.. This isn’t anywhere near good enough. The stats for tonight are horrific. He is not up to it and has lost the dressing room and fans
@DanDempsey93: I learnt alot about lots of these players by end of September mate….
