MP writes to the EFL asking for National League club Barrow to be promoted, however the letter has received backlash on social media.
Simon Fell, the MP for Barrow & Furness, suggests they do the right thing in sending them up, and also brought up when the club were voted out of the Football League back in 1972.

The letter read: “I hope that this email finds you, your family and colleagues well.
“I am writing to you in response to the decision taken by the National League yesterday to cancel all of their remaining matches.
“As you will no doubt be well aware, Barrow AFC sit top of the Vanarama National League at this conclusion of the league.
“You may also be aware that in 1972, after a vote of number clubs, Barrow AFC were relegated from the Football League, despite finishing clear of the relegation places.
“While I accept that we are in unprecedented times, It would appear that fate has come around and the time is right for Barrow AFC to be reinstated back into the Football League by way of promotion from the National League.
“It is regrettable that such a proud, historic football club as Bury Football Club was wound up and removed from your league earlier this season. But with that in mind it would make perfect sense for Barrow AFC to now take their rightful place back in the Football League, taking Bury’s place.
“The consequences of the decision made by the Football League could change the to of our town for generations. The club is owned and run by local people and to supporters. They have been working tirelessly on and off the field to develop and grow their Performance Centre, and the match day experience for supporters, guests, visiting teams, officials and staff.
“On the field. Ian Evatt and his team have transformed Barrow AFC into a team which is regarded as the best which this town has seen for more than fifty years.
“Barrow-in-Furness has a team and a football club of which it is very proud. To have Football League football back in our town will have significant benefits. The club, and our town, won’t let you down.
“I am asking for the English Football League to do the right thing and to permit Barrow AFC to be promoted back for the 2020/21 season, where they belong.
“I look forward to hearing from you soon.”
“I’m asking the EFL to do the right thing and permit Barrow AFC to be promoted”.

Fans reacted after reading that an MP writes to EFL asking for National League club to be promoted…
This!!! Anyone who disagrees is frankly biased. If it was mathematically won, I’d disagree. But it’s nowhere near that.

Why is it doing the right thing? 4 pts is nothing
— Graham (@Grahamwelsh16) April 30, 2020
Why is he waffling on about what happened nearly half a century ago – where is the relevance?

Never a Notts county fan are you ?
— Shaun McClure (@shaun4m) April 30, 2020
How can you promote a team who was probs gonna bottle the league anyway
— Liam motson (@Liammotson6) April 30, 2020
…so, Notts County, who were wrongly relegated last season just before Bury went under should be re-instated to their EFL status.

That’s convenient…instead of being promoted because you’re to big for the league get promoted on merit next year. Because this year it’s barrow who will replace bury

Ridiculous this. Barrow were going to finish 4th at best with Quigley missing 3 games. Title would definitely have been won by either Harrogate, Notts County or Yeovil

Yeah great, if they go up them so does every other team top of their league or top on ppg or…..

This is the issue with discrepancies throughout the pyramid system. There must be more consistency.

Not sure a team who is only 4 points clear with 9 games unplayed/cancelled warrants promotion. They were starting to choke. You’d think MPs would have far more pressing matters to deal with at the moment. ?♂️?♂️

I find it totally unedifying all the begging for promotion that Barrow are doing. I feel for them BUT they aren’t far enough clear to be awarded promotion.
Still to play Hgate,4 out of the top 7, plus Barnet. Plus CFIELD and Wrex in rele trouble.
No way should they be awarded it— Malcolm White (@DigDagMal) April 30, 2020
It’s not been earned or deserved!

I have sympathy with Barrow – especially in light of what happened in 1972 – but we can’t pick and choose who goes up etc. Either the season gets finished or it’s voided. Anything else risks being unfair.

Nothing at all to do with any MP in any constituency, PPG is the simplest solution in an unprecedented situation.
The remainder of this season has finished so if PPG is applied to every division then the top two, in the case of the national league should be awarded promotion and the bottom four should be relegated.
The primary concern of any human being should be directed to the beating of this terrible virus.
