Most Sheffield Wednesday players and staff members prefer Danny Rohl DIDN’T return to lead side

Most Sheffield Wednesday players and staff members prefer Danny Rohl DIDN’T return to lead the side into the 2025/26 season.

Rohl, who missed the start of pre-season amid speculation about his future, was reportedly set to return to the club after negotiations to leave fell through.

However, a significant portion of the players and staff, including the out-of-contract captain, oppose his return due to his absence during the club’s financial crisis and preseason preparations.

Joe Crann tweeted: “Led to believe that a Danny Röhl return to #SWFC would not be welcomed by a substantial portion of those at the club… Henrik Pedersen renewal was nothing to do with DR.

“The last 24 hours has thrown a lot back up into the air at this chaotic club.”

Earlier, he also wrote: “Understand that there could now be a bit of a scramble for Sheffield Wednesday… Know of interested buyers from the UK, America, and – most recently – a Monaco-based party. Led to believe Chansiri is open to selling. Could potentially move fast.”

The Star say that players have expressed their discontent to the board. Despite assistant manager Henrik Pedersen extending his stay, his decision is unrelated to Rohl’s situation, and the two are not in regular contact.

The players’ collective stance, communicated via WhatsApp, highlights a rift with Rohl, whose influence at the club has been damaged.

Although Rohl remains under contract, terminating it would be challenging due to the club’s financial issues, leaving Sheffield Wednesday facing significant internal turmoil as the new season approaches.

Meanwhile, EFL Analysis Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey has said that players in the Sheffield Wednesday squad are far from happy with the idea of Rohl coming back and that they communicated through WhatsApp, feeling like they have been let down by Rohl this summer by staying away from the club amid the financial crisis and are not happy that he has not been present for the start of pre-season training.

Alan Biggs has tweeted: “Word of Danny Rohl’s intention to stay at #SWFC is the best possible news for the club. It’s the biggest indication yet of Dejphon Chansiri being willing to sell & of a takeover genuinely being close. Keeping a very good manager is the cherry on that cake.

“The Rohl saga has split supporters with some critical of his stance & the way he’s made it. But two facts remain. He’s the best possible manager #SWFC could have at this time. And his resolute position has been a major force towards removing Chansiri.

“Where I am confused – & who isn’t btw? – is how this impacts re Henrik Pedersen. Sources said his extended coaching contract was with a view to taking full charge when Rohl left. Did he have promises to that effect? How will DR work with DC in interim? #SWFC

“Plenty to play out over the Danny Rohl “return” to #SWFC. Including how the dressing room feels. Will there be a welcome back? Both last night & today, I’ve heard of some reservations on that score.
Such a crazy situation all round. Impossible to call.

“Was being diplomatic here – & X has a tendency to urge caution! As per others, had heard that #SWFC players met yesterday when pretty much the broad agreement was they did not want DR to return. By contrast, happy with potential “new boss” Henrik Pedersen”

1867News wrote: “Alan appears to have had the same information as me. The players met yesterday to decide between them how to respond to what Rohl said. When Alan says “reservations” he is being gentlemanly. The response was unequivocal. No matter what the club statement or contract might say, Henrik Pedersen is the man they want to manage them this season and Danny has been made aware of that. #SWFC”

First there was speculation Rohl was potentially going to Leicester, discussions were to be had on his exit from the Owls. Rohl seemed destined to leave. Sheffield Wednesday looked at one point in potentially having their under 21s coach Andy Holdsworth as manager, then Rohl’s assistant Henrik Pedersen, who was linked with joining Brentford as part of Keith Andrews’ backroom staff, signed a new contract Sheffield Wednesday , with it expected he would be their new manager. Now Rohl seems set to stay on in charge. All this going on while some staff and players still go unpaid for recent months and takeover bids reportedly turned down.

Fans divided by surprise Danny Rohl U-turn as he looks set to stay as Sheffield Wednesday boss

Here’s how fans reacted as reported state that most Sheffield Wednesday players and staff members prefer Danny Rohl DIDN’T return to lead the side…

@GrantR_1867: Not surprised, players aren’t going to respect a man that doesn’t want to be there and has publicly wanted out for months. Pedersen clearly promised the managers role too. Rohl looking out for number one, not wanting to have to buy out his own contract.

@Jay_Blogs: You can’t blame them really. Leadership involves trust, integrity and respect and I’m sure many of them believe this has been lost.

@_ae19_: Sod him, hope he goes and rots at some obscure German club. Turn your nose up at us and do an interview to German media AT HILLSBOROUGH begging for a new job in Germany and expect a warm welcome? Piss off, Danny.

@harri_windle06: Just me that couldn’t give a toss who’s the manager next season as long as we have a new owner? #swfc

@mark_flemdog: I’m not surprised by this. I’ve lost a lot of respect for him, I’m sure the playing squad is no different. Put him on gardening leave. Should have been done months ago.

@scmw12: Feel for Wednesday fans, feels like they can’t win no matter what. Doomed as a result of the actions of an egomaniac running their club

@JonathanDaley: I really like Rohl as a manager but he has to explain fully to the players and fans what has been happening. If he can’t get at least 90% of the players and staff back on board quickly. We must look for a new manager for next season. #swfc

@dankitson2003: Be gone within a few months anyway, no one would be playing for him

@ConnorTSWFC: We’re stuck now. Either sack him (which he knows we can’t afford to do) or allow a manager who doesn’t want to be here to continue, and upset a lot of players who we all need to be pulling in the same direction. Could have taken £2.5-3m for him earlier in the window

@jack231997: Regardless what fans think. We need a manager that players want to play for, especially this season, it’ll be a fight, we need players to want to fight for their manager. He’s not for us anymore, he’s played a blinder to get sacked, clever #swfc

@StevenLove_79: Really don’t understand the hate for Rohl. He’s been our best manager in a long time. We’d be scrambling around in League One without him, he brought the club back together with a toxic owner at the helm. In his position, who wouldn’t look for another job? @swfc @1867News

@georgelerobot: Maybe we’ll announce the takeover with a kit launch showing Gassama and Bannan having a kick around at Hillsborough Park. A cross goes in from Bannan who’s on the end of it? Jamie Vardy in the new third kit. Rohl on the sidelines- smirks and walks back into Hillsborough. #swfc
