Max Lowe gets Sheffield United and Wednesday fans talking after making rare Blades-Owls switch

Max Lowe gets Sheffield United and Wednesday fans talking after making a rare Blades-Owls switch this summer transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday has completed the signing of Max Lowe from their local rivals Sheffield United on a free transfer.

Lowe’s contract with Sheffield United is due to end on July 1st, and he will then officially become a player for Sheffield Wednesday, meaning he will face his old club in the Championship for the 2024/25 season.

This transfer is notable with it being a rare direct move between the two clubs, the last time being Caolan Lavery in 2016.

The reaction from Sheffield Wednesday fans has been varied, some happy for Lowe to sign for them, while others have raised concerns about his injury history and performance on the pitch.

The club said in a statement: Max Lowe has agreed a deal to sign for Wednesday on 1 July.

Lowe is a versatile performer, equally at home in the left back berth or as a holding midfielder.

He began his career with Derby, graduating from the Rams’ academy and going on to post 42 senior appearances.

Loan spells with Shrewsbury and Aberdeen followed before a permanent move to our city rivals Sheffield United.

Lowe went on to make 44 appearances for the Blades, incorporating a temporary switch to Nottingham Forest, where he was part of the Reds team that won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2021/22.

The 27-year-old is a decorated England international in the younger age groups having represented the Three Lions at Under-16, 17, 18 and 20 level.

Lowe will put pen to paper at Hillsborough in July upon the expiry of his current contract.

Welcome to Wednesday, Max!
