Matty Cash booked as he dedicates Aston Villa goal to Poland teammate stuck in Ukraine

Matty Cash ended up getting booked as he dedicates his Aston Villa goal to a Poland teammate stuck in war ridden Ukraine.

On the 17th minute, the 24 year old midfielder found the net with a great finish from outside the area, chesting the ball in front of him and picking out the bottom corner from distance after Brighton failed to properly clear Lucas Digne’s cross from the left.

Matty Cash celebrated his goal by unveiling a message under his shirt for his Poland team-mate Tomasz Kedziora, who plays for Dynamo Kyiv and is still in the Ukrainian capital following the Russian invasion of the country.

“Stay strong my bro,” the message read, however the Villa defender was booked for his celebration leaving those in the Sky Sports studio and no doubt in the stadium dismayed.

Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine, which borders southern Russia, and In the early hours of Saturday morning is understood to have moved troops into the capital, Kyiv.

Several sporting institutions and individuals have made touching gestures of solidarity with the Ukrainian public.

Premier League defender Cash, who in 2021 declared allegiance for Poland, has shown support to national team team-mate Kedziora as seen above, but was harshly booked by the ref.

Jeff Stelling said on Soccer Saturday: “He took his shirt off for a fellow footballer who is still in Ukraine – a fellow Poland international.

“But he got booked for it!”

Cash plays for the Poland national team, who are due to play Russia in a World Cup play-off game next month ahead of the Qatar tournament later this year.

Cash, who became a Polish citizen in 2021 having qualified through his mum’s side and made his debut for Czesław Michniewicz’s side in November, tweeted a statement that has been released by Polish players in conjunction with the Polish FA.

In it, the footballers and their FA make clear their feelings on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that started on Thursday, and outline their wish not to play the play-off against Russia.

Ukraine borders Poland to the country’s east and has started taking in refugees.

“We, the players of the Polish national team, together with the Polish Football Association, decided that as a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we do not intend to play in the play-off match against Russia,” a statement tweeted by Cash, along with the flags of Poland and Ukraine and a handshake emoji, read.

“It is not an easy decision, but there are more important things in life than football.

“Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian nation and our friend from the national team, Tomasz Kedziora, who is stil in Kiev with his family.”

The statement is signed off with the hashtag #NoWarPlease.

Twitter users reacted as Matty Cash gets yellow carded by the referee for his Ukraine tribute goal celebration…

@Jonrapley: Rules are rules I’m afraid. Players have been booked for showing messages on their undershirts for years

@Seppe_wil: Malinovskyi wasn’t booked in the europa league… some things are bigger than football

@jpegwebster: measures need to be put in place so players don’t get booked for this

@HollyBaleen: Rescind Matty Cash’s yellow card for showing his message then. It’s an outdated rule anyway, and booking him for it doesn’t align yourselves with your solidarity.

@TonysaurusRox: The rule needs to be overhauled. In fact the inflexibility of the rule should never have existed in the first place.

@96_Mikeys: Doesn’t really matter what’s going on in the world. Rules are rules. You’re not allowed to take off your shirt, doing so sees you with a yellow card. As much as I disagree with it.

@joshkentx: getting booked is a disgrace

@samnthaxox: Lol they won’t ignore it. Gray got booked after Leicester’s owners died why do you think they’ll ignore it for this?

@GarySmithJnr: It’s a stupid rule, we all know it’s a stupid rule, makes zero sense. However it’s a rule, players know they can’t remove their shirts. #AVFC

@OliverBoisen: People saying “it’s the rules”, Malinovsky didn’t get booked when he did exactly the same thing. It’s obvious the referee’s just a fucking knobhead

@f1jakub: matty cash supported his mate stuck in ukraine and the ref fucking booked him, what a joke.

@MPhill90:
And got booked for it
Ridiculous

@Peachy1223: Solidarity??? U booked the player who took his shirt off to show support

@CallumG_Fitness: Shouldn’t have been booked for that

@BisonMoose: @JeffStelling, as much as I sympathise with Matty Cash (& his friend) that the message was for, when he took off his shirt, during his goal celebration. But, players know the rules & they will get booked (No matter of the circumstances). You can’t bend this rule, simple as !

@MrJack_ONeill: Matty Cash being booked for celebrating and showing his support for a friend in Ukraine can be added to the list of absurdities in football. Great goal and wonderful gesture from Cash.

@ShannonMcx: Cannot believe that Matty Cash has just been booked for that. Absolutely fucking outrageous

@watfordfocus: I don’t see why removing one’s shirt should be a bookable offence. The booking was fair because that’s the rule, but I don’t see why that’s the rule.

@Lewisthemackem: Matty Cash getting booked for expressing his worries about the war, wtf

@Sammy78avfc: Absolutely stunning goal! Should never have been given a yellow, regardless of the rules. Such beautiful sentiment with your message 🇺🇦💜💙

@PhilHRoberts (replying to @premierleague): Maybe, if you actually support @mattycash622’s message enough to share it on your socials, you should consider rescinding the yellow card he got? I understand the ref can’t be expected to read each message and make that judgement in the moment, but you can! 🇺🇦
