Mark Hughes was seen in ‘frank discussion’ with a couple of Carlisle United fans after a 3-0 defeat to National League leaders York City.
Josh Stones put the Minstermen ahead just six minutes in, Alex Hunt made it 2-0 from the penalty spot with 15 minutes remaining, then Alex Newby sealed the win with a goal in stoppage time.
The result means York remain top, now unbeaten in 16 league games while the hosts Carlisle sit 4th and three points behind but have played one game more.
@thepaddockpillock Mark Hughes argues with angry Carlisle United supporters after tonight’s second heavy defeat of the season to York City in the National League. Asked about the exchanges on BBC Radio Cumbria, Mark Hughes said: “There was only just this one guy, I couldn’t hear what he was saying, so I just asked him to come over to repeat it.
“He was fine, he was just asking about how the game went.
“He had a view, I had a view, and then his mate came over, and he had a completely different view, which I didn’t agree with, so that was it.”
He continued, per the club website: “It was a game, wasn’t too many chances in fairness. Up to their second goal, I thought we certainly matched them.
“At 1-0, we’re very much in the game, asking questions of them. But the second goal, that really killed the way we played.
“Georgie (Kelly) had a really good one in the first-half, probably he’ll feel that he should have converted that.
“I think we lost a little bit of structure, a little bit of shape and a little bit of belief.
“They were very good in terms of their game management. They slowed the game down and took their time, which they’re quite within their rights to do.
“It wasn’t a great game in terms of chances. The key moments for them, they were able to capitalise, and we didn’t.
“You’ve just got to wait for them to make a mistake and then everybody has to react. Those moments were few and far between.
“We’ve got a lot of games to play and a lot to achieve this year. All we can do now is make sure we win the vast majority of the games we’ve got left.”

Carlisle United lost ground in the National League automatic promotion race as York City won 3-0 at Brunton Park last night. Here’s what United captain Morgan Feeney had to say.#bbcfootball #carlisleunited #cumbrians pic.twitter.com/GQjKK2axWe

York first team coach Gary Elphick said, on his side’s performance in tough weather conditions, per York Press: “To a man it was unbelievable.
“Out of possession, our press set up the whole game for us and when we’re aggressive like that out of possession, usually we’re good with it as well.
“Every player that was involved tonight, it’s a hell of a squad effort, a great management effort as well.
“It’s brilliant when it comes together as a collective.
“There’s no leagues won today unfortunately, we need to keep going, keep building points, keep building momentum and keep that togetherness within the squad, because that’s the key.
“On and off of the pitch, if you’re together in whatever you do, you’ve got a chance in life.
“It was unbelievable.
“To go to Carlisle and win 3-0, it’s a hell of an effort, but one step at a time.”
He added: “It was the game plan, Stu said it in the dressing room that we had come here to quiet the crowd down.
“We knew it was a hostile crowd here at the moment, so as soon as we went a goal to the good, you could feel the jitters coming around the place.
“It was an absolutely perfect away performance.
“It sets his [Brookes] 90 minutes up perfectly, we see it day in, day out with Brooksey, he’s a professional and is constant in whatever he does.
“Boy has he reaped the rewards tonight, an absolutely fantastic performance, he did everything right and didn’t put a foot wrong.
“Once again he’s another string to our bow who adds balance being a left-footer, so once again, it’s another find.
“Matt Uggla and Julie-Anne have put their money where their mouth is and have brought in quality like Ben Brookes.”
On Hunt’s goal: “I think it was a discussion that Ollie and Hunty had had previously.
“Ollie has missed a couple, so he’s probably not as confident as he once was.
“I’ve got to say, Hunty, I thought he was absolutely outstanding tonight.
“He’s got big balls, he is so brave with and without the ball and he typifies everything that this York team is about at the moment.
“I love Hunty, I can see him as a future captain one day, he was excellent tonight.”
On Boreham Wood, Forest Green and Carlisle dropping points: “It’s perfect, it also makes the point against Southend look a better point now, which I think Stu mentioned in previous interviews.
“It’s 16 unbeaten now and this is the run of games and the run of form that you want in these leagues.
“We must keep it going, Rochdale have won again so we must remain up to task and keep going.”
Here’s how social media users reacted as Mark Hughes has heated words with Carlisle fans after a 3-0 defeat to leaders York…
@scholes_peter: I really don’t like to see that. We aren’t good enough and the team are miles behind York in many areas but this kind of confrontation doesn’t do anyone any good.
@calummackay9257: Fingers crossed he’s had enough and walks , he’s sounded more downbeat than usual for weeks , on a separate note why is it this season there’s been complete and utter silence from the owners?
@DanTakesOnFooty: Just because they are top of the league it doesn’t mean we can’t lay a glove on them. The mentality is a huge problem and I’d expect better from someone who’s achieved in his career what Hughes has.
@cufcjoel: We’ve effectively been beat 8-0 by them. HT whistle went there was boos from the crowd (IMO most of it was due to the referee) and he turned round big theatrical holding up a 1 and 0 with his hands as if he’s happy it was only 1-0. He must watch a different game to the rest of us
@GeoffRo39583097: Time for Hughes to go his tactics don’t change we where miles behind York
@W1seman1994: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out Hughes.
@pj_butcher: 4th, 3 points off top and you all want the manager gone! You really do get everything you deserve for this kind of behaviour!
@cufcjoel: Probably best not to comment when you obviously haven’t got the faintest idea on how things have been going this season for us?
@pj_butcher: I’m just looking at a league table that shows you are currently 4th & 3 points behind top. What more context do I need? Not playing nice enough football? Manager said something you don’t agree with as a fan? Be careful what you wish for – there are 20 sides below you in the table
@LindaNi1212O2: Think we just saw the National League Champions tonight.
@bcafcwin:
3 pts off 1st place btw and they want Hughes gone.
They get exactly what they deserve!
Still out playing with your fireworks boys?
#BCAFC
@DeckchairBlues: He has to go @CastleSportsGrp this is some of the worst football I’ve seen since the last numpty. We’ve bottled it against every single quality team we’ve played this year. Time to go. #HUGHSOUT
@blando98: Hopefully that’s the beginning of the end #cufc
@Matthewgaskell9: Has to go, simple as. There’s so much wrong you don’t even know where to start. Should be sacked for pick Aaron Hayden alone. Better pull your finger out @CastleSportsGrp
@Oli_Cufc: SACK HIM TONIGHT.
@adam_cufc7: Losing 8-0 on aggregate to a supposed “promotion rival” is embarrassing, get the corner flag out
@MikeTurney7: Another shocking performance but this time against a decent team. Completely outplayed by York for the second time this season. Could easily have been 5 (or more) again. No evidence whatsoever of any tactics. Have the owners lost all interest in what is going on? @CastleSportsGrp
@5TU4RTK: Well, well, we’ll.@CastleSportsGrp get Hughes in that office tonight and demand answers. You cant be watching this and be happy. No plan A, B or C. No identity. No passion. Leaders lead, come out tonight saying *we aren’t happy and want changes. If we dont, we wont get playoffs
@calummackay9257: Also would be great to hear from the owners ? Radio silence all season , have they got bored ?
They have a point #cufc pic.twitter.com/E30eGJFrME
