Marcus Maddison to be sentenced after violent attack punching 60 year old woman

Marcus Maddison is set to be sentenced after a violent attack saw him punching a 60 year old woman and breaking her nose with other injuries.

He has been described to have been boozed-up, with Gazette Live reporting that the footballer chucked cheesy chips at the victim before shattering her nose leaving her to bleed.

She had been making her way back home from spending time in Darlington town centre with her daughter, but in the incident, he calls the latter  a “fat s***”.

Earlier that night, Teesside Crown Court heard how Marcus Maddison had ‘already challenged’ two other women in a kebab shop having felt annoyed at them ‘skipping the queue’.

Outlining the case, prosecutor Robin Turton says the incident took place on the 24th of September 2022, at a time when Maddison was contracted with National League North club Darlington trying to revive his career after taking a break due to mental health issues.

The defendant was out drinking with a friend in Darlington. But as per Mr Turton, at around 3am Maddison and his friend left The Gate venue and headed to get some takeaway, finding this kebab shop before they made their way home.

Prosecutor Robin Turton adds Maddison was having words with the victim’s daughter saying “f*** off, don’t come near me you fat s***” then a different person shouted “you f***** wait” to which the defendant replied “you won’t f***** catch me.”

The prosecutor said: “Throughout the exchange [name of defendant’s friend] was telling the defendant ‘home Marcus home’ and later up the street he heard the defendant say ‘you come near me and I’m going to pelt these cheesy chips at you’ and he saw the defendant throw his chips with some hitting the victim.”

The court is then told that Maddison fell down as he threw his food before getting up and that is when he punched the woman in the face.

Mr Turton said his friend heard a “distinctive pop sound of the blow” as she fell down.

The defendant left the scene before police officers on Duke Street spotted the victim on the floor holding her face.

Mr Turton said: “There was a steady stream of blood coming from what appeared to be a broken nose. She was in the doorway of a shop in Duke Street with her daughter. She was unable to speak due to her injuries.”

The daughter said to officers they had been walking home from a night out as she was on the phone to her friend.

She said the defendant took to mimic her before shouting abuse when an argument started. The Mum got involved by trying to say the abuse had been uncalled for.

Maddison was subsequently arrested and whilst examining his hand they had spotted an oversized ring. He told police at the scene “she either hits me or I hit her, I had no other option”.

The 60 year old was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital a short drive down the road from the town centre and after examination, it was found that she suffered swelling and bruising to the left side of her face.

A CT scan revealed multiple mid-facial bone fractures, and to this day, she still struggles.

The victim is see on video, to which see explains more about her teeth feeling numb, her sinuses was damaged, her sense of taste and smell changed, she feels in pain, tends to become more dizzy, has blackouts and now does’t want to go out anymore.

In police interview the defendant made no comment to all questions,  but on the 20th of June, he turned up Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court and pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm without intent.

The court heard Maddison, who now stays in Yarm, around 11 miles away from Darlington, is of previous good character.

Recorder Paul Reid adjourned the case for a victim personal statement and updated medical evidence with. Maddison granted unconditional bail and will now appear at court on the 8th of August to be sentenced.
