Marcus Maddison discovers his prison sentence after disgusting incident

Ex-EFL and non league player Marcus Maddison discovers his prison sentence after a disgusting incident which took place last year.

He was described to have been boozed-up, with Gazette Live reporting that the footballer chucked cheesy chips at the 60 year old woman before breaking her nose and leaving the victim to bleed.

She had been making her way back home after spending time in Darlington town centre with her daughter, but in the incident, he called the latter a “fat s***”.

At an earlier hearing, Teesside Crown Court were told that he took issue with two other females in a kebab shop after being annoyed at them ‘skipping the queue’.

On the case in July, prosecutor Robin Turton said the incident took place on the 24th of September 2022, while the defendant was out drinking with a friend in Darlington town centre.

Robin Turton said at around 3am, he and his friend left The Gate venue and headed to get some takeaway, finding this kebab shop before they made their way home.

Maddison had words with the victim’s daughter saying “f*** off, don’t come near me you fat s***” then a different person shouted “you f***** wait” to which the defendant replied “you won’t f***** catch me.”

The prosecutor said: “Throughout the exchange [name of defendant’s friend] was telling the defendant ‘home Marcus home’ and later up the street he heard the defendant say ‘you come near me and I’m going to pelt these cheesy chips at you’ and he saw the defendant throw his chips with some hitting the victim.”

Turton said his friend heard a “distinctive pop sound of the blow” as she went down.

Maddison left the scene before police officers on Duke Street spotted the victim on the floor holding her face.

Turton adds: “There was a steady stream of blood coming from what appeared to be a broken nose. She was in the doorway of a shop in Duke Street with her daughter. She was unable to speak due to her injuries.”

The woman said: “My jaw was broken in multiple places. I can’t eat on the left hand side of my mouth. I have problems with my teeth.

“I can no longer smell properly and have been on various different medications by my general practitioner to treat various ongoing issues. I’ve been a regular visitor to my GP since the assault. I have nerve damage to my face on the last hand side and my taste buds are damaged.”

In mitigation, Maddison’s barrister Tabitha Buck said the footballer has no previous convictions, was very remorseful for his actions and stopped drinking since the incident having admitted grievous bodily harm without intent.

Buck said he has previously been a “positive member of society” and is hopeful to gain employment as a tattoo artist. But, Recorder Paul Reid said: “public violence like this is so serious that only a immediate custodial sentence can possibly be justified.”

Maddison has an address listed in Peterborough, but the defendant had been staying in Yarm nearby Darlington in the meantime.

His defence said to court, as per Peterborough Telegraph that he acted under the influence of alcohol and panicked after falling over, struggling to flee because of an injury- and hadn’t been aware of the women’s age or vulnerability until being told following the incident.

He hasn’t been seeing his daughter so that this didn’t impact her young life had he been given a custodial sentence.

Maddison said ‘no comment’ upon arrest then soon handed himself in to police.

Recorder Paul Reid, who issued Maddison his sentence said: “You were perfectly capable of walking away – and your friend told you to do just that – but you refused.

“This was a spontaneous assault, albeit horrific in its nature… (the ring) it was a weapon.”

Darlington issued a statement: “The club were made aware of an alleged incident and conducted an immediate disciplinary investigation.

“After discussions with the player concerned the club agreed to mutually terminate his contract with immediate effect at that time.

“Darlington FC is a fan owned club and has a zero tolerance towards discrimination, violence of abusive behaviour.

Twitter users reacted as Marcus Maddison discovers his prison sentence after the disgusting incident…

@andyhoj: Good

@UnknownUser0311: This has to be one of the biggest career collapses in the EFL. Easily a Championship standard player but so greedy for money he didn’t want to earn somehow leads him to end up doing Twitch full time, then get crowd funded surgery to return to football and then to jail! #pufc

@roby_teed: Such a sad downfall. Waste of prem level talent on a (clearly disturbed) arsehole #pufc

@brownh1989: Remember fans were crying out for us wanting to sign him

@jeanneventers: Oh dear , what a waste of good talent

@TheSamwise1998: He’ll join joey Barton at rovers when he gets out

@JohnBridger_: Signing for Bristol Rovers for the 24/25 season then?

@IainHughes8: Hate the fact this Scum was ever associated with our football club. #cafc 🔴⚪️⚽️

@craigDLyons: He’s not made for prison. Deserves all he gets. What a waste of talent. Superb footballer when he’s on it, but a troubled lad. Unfortunately I think we all saw it ending this way.

@Seanwanderers1: At least all them donations to his knee surgery have helped him get his career back on track! Waster

@shshshjsisi: fuck me I forgot about this prick

@bradderz2212: Absolute bellend. Had all the potential but his attitude cost him. We all saw it coming…

@TheDB30: What he had in talent he severely lacked in attitude.
