Marco Silva gets grumpy with fourth official and Andoni Iraola in Bournemouth’s win over Fulham

Marco Silva gets grumpy with the fourth official and Andoni Iraola in Bournemouth’s win over Fulham on Friday night.

It wasn’t just stormy weather at the Vitality Stadium, with it also stormy on the touchline, Silva, and some of his Fulham staff, having words with the Bournemouth boss early on in the game.

Sky Sports said in their live blog: “17: Silva is already grumpily patrolling around his technical area and is having words with the fourth official. Think he’s annoyed with something Iraola has said or done. One to keep an eye on…”

BBC Sport wrote: “Marco Silva is having a heated conversation on the touchline with Andoni Iraola. Well more Silva talking and Iraola listening.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva speaking with Sky Sports at half time:

“The idea was to not have a reference up top, try and use the spare player in behind the midfield. Some moments we did it, other moments more difficult.

“I think we have been controlling well. We are a little deeper than I want us to be. They are strong with Semenyo and Evanilson with the runs in behind. We have to be better on the ball. If we are better on the ball we will have more chances.”

Bournemouth went on too complete their comeback to beat Fulham 3-1, with stunning strikes from Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert sending the Cherries second in the Premier League. Ryan Sessegnon had given strikerless Fulham the lead.

The result, going into the wrest of the weekend’s action, sees Bournemouth up to 2nd in the Premier League table, with 14 points form 7 games played. Fulham are 11th with 8 points.

Fulham have now lost six points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, only Brentford (8) have lost more.

Meanwhile, this was just the second time that Bournemouth won a Premier League match by 2+ goals having conceded the game’s opening goal (3-1 tonight), after a 4-1 win against Leicester back in July 2020.

Fulham boss Marco Silva speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Very difficult for us the way we lost the game. The first 10-15 minutes were hard for us, Bournemouth started better than us and after we started to realise the moments to jump on the pressure and in more of a mid block that I like to see.

“We started to control the ball and the movements from them. We knew how Evanilson and Semenyo would play, the pace and quality up front, from 15 minutes we started to control that very, very well. The game was much more balanced and we started to create, they had some chances too, probably more clear cut chances in the first half.

“At half time we adjusted some things and I think our second half was very good until the equaliser. The 1-0 was a great collective goal from us and then after in two individual moments they decide the game.

“Looking at the first goal, two versus one on the side, you have to be much stronger. Two individual moments from Semenyo and then after another from Kluivert from 25 yards.

“This moment of the season is very difficult for us. Without two strikers and then after 10 minutes lose one of the best players for us so far in Lukic. But then leading the score like we were on a tough night away from home, collectively we had the game under control and in two moments they decide the game.”

Silva speaking to Sky Sports: “Very tough. The way we lost was very tough for us. We had problems in the first 10-15 minutes, they started better than us, we had some difficulties to adjust. And then we lost Lukic, a key player for us, the way we organise on and off the ball, he has been the soul of the team as well. After losing Tete and two strikers, to lose Sasa too was a tough moment.

“Even losing him I thought we started to control the game much better. We knew the offensive movement from them, Semenyo and Evanilson, the way they go direct behind the back line, we knew we had to b aware of it.

“We had some good moments to punish them on offensive transition and counter attack, but we missed the last pass. They had some chances too but no clear cut ones for either team.

“Second half we started better and controlled the game very well, had long possession and the goal is a good example of it. Without a striker we wanted to give more freedom to the wide players like Castagne and Sessegnon, and a great pass from Chuwueze and finish from Sessegnon.

“At that moment the game was completely under control and two individual moments decided the game really. 100% sure they are preventable, the first one when you have two against one on the side you have to be stronger and the second, the shot from 25 yards, we have to make Kluivert go out wide and not make the shot. We are penalised by two individual players that have the quality, power and pace to do it.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a difficult game and to win and come back after going a goal down is important.

On how he reacts after going a goal down: “You have to risk, there is no other option. You put all the offensive players that you can. It is the players. Justin [Kluivert] scored an amazing goal. Even the goal on the counter. The players make the difference. When you are losing, you have to try to change the game. Very difficult goals, I give the players all the merit.”

On Antoine Semenyo: “I think he is a player with confidence. It has been growing with him. He has played in other divisions, earning his way into the Premier League. He is very fundamental for us. He is improving every time and we have to encourage him. I try to make him not focus on the numbers.”

On Justin Kluivert: “Amazing finish, top corner, power. He scored this type of goal a couple of times last season. We were pushing and we needed this goal to create more momentum and finish the game like we did.”

On Bournemouth being second in the table: “I value the 14 points we have. We have difficult games after the international break, we play Palace away, Manchester City away, Aston Villa away. It doesn’t get easier but it is good to arrive with a good number of points. I hope we take a breath which the players deserve and we go again.”

Iraola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It was a strange game, especially in the first half not a lot of things happened. It was quite tactically. We had more of the ball. We had to risk and I will give credit to the players because we scored goals. It was difficult for both teams because it is raining, it is windy.

On Antoine Semenyo: “Great play from Antoine [Semenyo], great goal from Justin [Kluivert]. Semenyo is in a very good spot, he is improving every season. I think he has confidence and we have to keep him there and encourage him to improve areas that he can improve. Now he is a player that is making the difference.”

On Bournemouth’s performances so far: “We are in a great place. I value the 14 points, a good amount for the games we have played. Probably more than we expected but it is only the beginning. New players are giving us other options and I hope we can keep this build of the team. We had to take risks and put on more offensive players and it worked. The players have to make the difference and today they made it. The players have given us the three points.”

On how Bournemouth can go: “It is still very early, seven games into the season and after the break we have Palace, Manchester City and Aston Villa away. This competition is very difficult and you have to fight a lot. We will try to stay competitive and stay in all the games but knowing that we are playing in a very difficult league.”

Bournemouth goal scorer Justin Kluivert speaking to Sky Sports: “Wow. It’s a big statement. Losing 1-0 and having the team spirit to come back is incredible.”

On Iraola’s half time message: “I had to warm up outside so I didn’t hear it. But I know the manager and I believe he said that we have to show ourselves more, do what we know and what we are. That’s high pressure and high energy and that is what we showed in the second half.

“He also showed us that there were possibilities to shoot from the edge [of the box], so with my shot, why not? You have to try it.”

On Iraola: “He is incredible. If you see also the guys that have left the team, how we are doing at the moment is incredible. I always say that the driver of the bus is the coach and he is driving us a crazy route. Amazing driver, so we follow him.

“We love it and that shows in the table with second place, but we keep humble because the season is long. But who knows, who knows. We go for the biggest possible.”

Kluivert speaking to Sky Sports on what Iraola said when he brought him on: “Do what I do best and I think I showed that today. As I said previously we have a great team and a lot of great players. I haven’t started at the beginning [of the season], I was injured, so it is tough to come into the team again. After a good season for me also, you have to come and show yourself again. And I did that today.”

On Antoine Semenyo’s performance: “He is incredible. He shows it every game now. He is just world class. We are glad to have him and that is why I said we have a good team. He is the one that scores goals for us and we appreciate that. He’s doing an amazing job.”

On what’s possible this season: “It’s early, but we have to strive for the highest possible. The mentality that we have now is not to look down but up and we will keep doing that. The highest possible and we won’t settle for any less, no way.”

Bournemouth goalscorer Antoine Semenyo speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s a great feeling. We have been working hard since the start of the season. We have lost some important players to us but we have connected well since the start of the season. It has been a great start and a great environment to be part of.

On Bournemouth’s comeback: “We knew there would be lots of spaces so we just needed to be patient, keep moving the ball around. There were loads of space in transition and we exploited that really well in the later stages of the game.”

On being clinical in front of goal: “In previous seasons I have hit the ball too quickly so throughout the off season it was about being calm. I know if I place it I will score. That’s what I have implemented this season and the results are showing.”

On his first goal: “I wanted to get the cross in and I saw that the crossing options were blocked off and then I looked at the keeper’s leg, always look at the keeper’s legs and just needed to get the execution right. It was just perfect and it went in the bottom corner.”

On his second goal: “I just put my head down and ran. I didn’t think he was going to play it to be honest but I just placed it in the corner. It’s a great finish. You could tell by the celebration I was so tired but happy as always.”

On his assist: “I just played it to him and hoped for the best. It was a great finish from Justin [Kluivert]. We see it in training, week in, week out. He has got that knuckleball whip technique and the keeper wasn’t getting anywhere near it. It’s such a great finish and just set us on our way to victory.”

“I’m not looking at that, I’m just keeping focus on what I am doing, playing with confidence and a smile on my face. I enjoy playing with this team and hopefully many more goals and assists to come.”

On Bournemouth’s ambitions for the season: “Game by game, don’t want to jinx anything. I don’t want to say anything crazy so we will just wait and see.”

Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It was a bit of a dull first half but going in at half time the manager just said to take as many shots as we can, expose them on the transition.

“Obviously we conceded which is frustrating, but we knew we would get some chances. It was just building up and building up, and then the space opened up on the byline for me and the win came from that point onwards.”

On what went through his mind before his first goal: “I knew I was going to beat him [the defender]. I knew I wanted to go to the byline and maybe cross the ball. I looked up and I saw that there were no options there, so my next thought process was through the keepers legs, and I knew if I put it there I would score. It was executed perfectly so I’m happy with it.”

On his second goal: “I was just getting my head down and trying to run as fast as I could to see if I could be support. I thought he [Gannon-Doak] was going to go by himself but he played it and it was just a calm, collected finish. I was very tired from that transition but I knew I just had to be calm and place it in the net.”

Semenyo speaking to BBC Match of the Day on playing the best football of his life: “Yeah, I’d like to think so. I thank God massively. He’s played a massive part in my life and I’m just reaping the rewards now. So yeah, I thank him always.

On the summer signings adapting well: “To be honest I’m happy with the signings that we’ve got. Of course sad with the signings that have left but we’ve adapted really well. The guys that have come in are great and have adapted really well with our system, so we need to keep building with them and as a group. It’s been fantastic since the start of pre-season we just need to keep building.”

On if there’s any surprise internally it’s going so well: “I don’t think so. Again everyone wants to work hard for each other. We just need to keep pushing and we’ll see what happens.”
