Mansfield Town have took to issue a statement after their own fans attacked AFC Wimbledon supporters following the midweek clash.
The Stags fought back after going 2-0 down to see off 10-man AFC Wimbledon in a League Two thriller on Tuesday night.
An action packed first half saw Josh Davison put the away side 2-0 up inside 16 minutes before Mansfield didn’t give up after Chris Gunter was sent off for retaliation.
Nathan Young-Coombes fed Davison into the box to fire under Christy Pym from the right after four minutes, then 12 minutes later – Davison buried a diving header with Young-Coombes again the provider from a right-wing cross.
Rhys Oates sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty kick 10 minutes before half time after Jack Currie had brought down George Lapslie to start the comeback.
9 minutes later, Mansfield got an equaliser as Lapslie headed home a fine Jordan Bowery cross from close range.
Wimbledon were down to 10 men after 45 minutes with Gunter getting a red card for retaliation, grabbing hold of Stephen Quinn and throwing him to the floor. Quinn was booked for kicking the ball.
The hosts were finally ahead on the 56th minute as Ollie Clarke’s low cross was met by George Maris and found the net thanks to a deflection. After 70 minutes, it was 4-2 as Riley Harbottle headed home from close range from a Maris corner.
Three minutes from full time, Lapslie crossed low from the right to set up Swan for a far-post tap-in and got Mansfield’s fifth of the night to cause jubilant scenes in the home ends.
CLUB STATEMENT:
Following Tuesday night’s match at home to AFC Wimbledon, the club has issued the following statement:
Tuesday night’s performance and result at home to AFC Wimbledon encapsulated much of what we all love about football.
Like our supporters, we were proud of our players and the way in which they staged a comeback to earn a 5-2 victory in a highly-entertaining encounter at One Call Stadium.
Sadly, Tuesday night was marred by a group of mindless Mansfield supporters attacking Wimbledon fans after the game within Portland Retail Park.
The aforementioned Mansfield fans went out of their way to antagonise and attack innocent visiting supporters, leading to a small group of Wimbledon fans being locked inside the Burger King on Portland Retail Park for their own protection, and staff calling the emergency services along with concerned members of the public.
The club will do its utmost to ensure that these so-called Mansfield supporters are identified and appropriate actions are taken. The club would also like to offer an unreserved apology to the Wimbledon supporters affected by these senseless attacks.
We pride ourselves on being a family club and there is absolutely no place for incidents of violence and threatening behaviour. Such actions have no place in our local community.
It is very important to us that everyone who comes to a match at One Call Stadium feels safe without being threatened in any way.
The club is committed to ensuring that matchdays remain safe and enjoyable for genuine supporters and families.
The club will not tolerate such irresponsible behaviour and remains committed to taking the strongest possible action against anyone found guilty of being involved in criminal activities, including barring individuals from future games.
There was reaction as Mansfield issue a statement after their fans attacked AFC Wimbledon supporters…
@DanWestwell: I’m not completely sure they were Stags fans. My wife was waiting in the retail park for my son and she saw them come over the bridge near the end of the game. Proper Stags fans were inside the stadium supporting their team.
@bigcal69654896: @Richie1889 locked in fucking Burger King I’m creasing 😭
@cresswellhibbe1: For the sake of any future anecdotes, I am sure ‘took a kicking at Mansfield’ is a much more better ending than ‘hid behind the bloke serving onion rings’.
@LangersSnr: I got chased by about a dozen Grimsby fans in Mansfield, I was completely alone, saw a butchers shop ran in, got in the queue and seconds later they ran by….chap serving offered me a frozen leg of lamb and said if you want to buy this, you can hit em with it… 😂
@Blobodan: Absolute morons
@brightondon: Stay classy on and off the pitch 😆⚽️
@Deadin45: Fair play to you for getting the bit in about them locking themselves inside Burger King as if it was a bomb shelter. 🤣
@achandler2409: Relieved it wasn’t a fish and chip shop. Could have taken a battering 😬
@hursty808: Sad and Pathetic, from both parties involved.
@AlanWhitworth5: Ban them for life.
@ColinParry17: Anybody fighting should try growing up. No need enjoy the game and go home safe . Ridiculous someone could do easily die.
@Canny6886: Absolute pricks, no room for em at Stags 😡😡
@TwistedmindPhot: No place for this no matter who you support. Never saw a hint of trouble at Wembley with Stag fans. Everyone just enjoying the match not fighting. Get em found, get em banned. We have a few idiots at #Vale but most I own underpants that are older! Its not big or clever lads\
@Owen25__: Wimbledon fans running to Burger King and locking themselves in. Brilliant 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@SCFCkierann: 2022 and people still go to football games for a fight 🥴
@Liability_Perry: I’d never ever leave the house again if I got locked in a Burger King for my own safety
@ChrisLukeJones: How you gonna get locked in a Burger King 😭😭😭
@molobolous: Imagine trying to get a chicken royale and seeing that 😂
@euan_weddell: Afc boys getting battered everywhere they go 😂😂😂
@sam_jeffs: I don’t get fighting myself, that’s just me. However if you want to fight, fight with people that want to do the same thing in a place away from a load of innocent people just trying to enjoy their day at the football. No issue with that what so ever
@Callummeakins: the same big tough wimbledon fans asking basically the entire efl for scraps have ran away and hid in burger king toilets 💀
@lauren_sadlerx: NO BUT PLEASE THEY RAN INTO BURGER KING FOR PROTECTION I AM DEAD HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Also, I’m sorry for anything I’ve ever said Mansfield fans. What a club
@Ethan_MK728: Bullied on and off the pitch 😭😭
@bwaterfield03: feel like it needed investigating properly before banning lads that had nothing to do with it, a walk to the pub after the game results in a ban, love it 😃😃😃
@sufcbi1ly: That’s a hell of a read
@stagladanddad: If your only reason for coming to football is this, then don’t come back we don’t want you 💛💙
“But YOU LOT, locked innocent Wimbledon fans in Burger King.
Disgusting.” https://t.co/UWvUl8iCOH pic.twitter.com/EcpKFv6VYT
