Manchester City to win.

City’s home advantage and scoring strength give them the edge, although Brighton’s win at Manchester United in the previous round makes this a demanding tie.

Match preview: where the tie could be decided

Only two league positions separate City and Brighton, so this is a meeting of strong early-season performers rather than an obvious cup mismatch. City’s 2–1 defeat at Aston Villa interrupted their league progress, but a 5–1 European win over AEK showed the scoring threat still available to them. The question is how much of that authority they can establish against opposition capable of keeping and using the ball themselves.

Brighton’s 3–2 victory at Manchester United in round three is particularly relevant. They have already won a difficult away tie against Premier League opposition, and another trip to Manchester need not feel like unfamiliar territory. Their latest 2–0 league defeat at Liverpool provides a reminder of the cost of allowing a leading side to dictate the decisive moments.

City will want to make home pressure tell without leaving Brighton a clear route into the spaces behind it. Brighton need enough composure in possession to avoid spending the night defending successive attacks, while choosing their moments to commit players forward. League form establishes the standard both have reached; the cup leaves room for selection changes and a different outcome across one evening.

How both teams reached the fourth round

City swept past Norwich 5–0 in the third round. Brighton’s 3–2 win at Manchester United gives them a contrasting route into this fixture: a narrow, high-scoring away success rather than a comfortable home passage.

When is the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw?

The draw takes place on Wednesday 28 October, after Liverpool v Chelsea on Sky Sports. Dave Jones hosts, with Conor Coady and Graeme Le Saux making the draw. There is no fixed draw time: the 8pm match could go to penalties. Quarter-final ties are scheduled for the week commencing 14 December 2026.

This fourth-round tie has no extra time: if the scores are level after 90 minutes, it goes straight to penalties. The prediction and supporter poll above refer to the score after 90 minutes, rather than which team qualifies.

What is the financial reward for a cup run?

There is no fixed prize-fund payment for winning this fourth-round tie. The reported competition awards are £100,000 for the winners, £50,000 for the runners-up and £25,000 for losing semi-finalists. Those are awards for the finishing stage, rather than a cumulative payment for every round.

The clubs also share net gate receipts after permitted match costs. Television selections can bring facility fees, with the amount depending on the round and broadcast arrangements. Those sources of income are separate from prize money.
