Man Utd’s Mason Greenwood arrested on suspicion of rape and assault

Man Utd’s Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault after the allegations made against him on Sunday.

The 20-year-old has also been suspended by his club and remains in police custody as enquiries continue say Greater Manchester Police.

It comes after a post shared to Instagram featuring pictures and videos which showed a young woman [his girlfriend] with a number of injuries including a cut to her mouth which was pouring with blood and several bruises.

The woman, Harriet Robson, shared a disturbing audio clip in which a man can be heard threatening a woman with the posts visible on the woman’s Instagram page but have since been deleted. She clearly says ‘Mason’ in it.

A police spokesman said: ‘Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

‘An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.

‘He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.

‘If you’re a victim of domestic abuse, or are concerned about someone you know, please use our online reporting facility or use our LiveChat facility on our website, or call 101.

‘In an emergency that’s on-going or life is in danger, always dial 999.’

Manchester United said it was aware of the allegations, while Mason Greenwood’s sponsor Nike said the company was ‘deeply concerned’ and that it would ‘continue to monitor the situation’.

The Premier League club at first said it would not make any further comment until the facts had been established, adding: ‘Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.’

However they later updated that statement this afternoon, which said: ‘Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.’

Earlier today, it is believed police officers visited the woman’s family home where her father said they had been devastated by the revelations.

He added: ‘The first thing we knew about this was at 6am this morning.

‘It is dreadful. I’m just coming to terms with it all. As a father you don’t want to know things like that happening to your daughter.

‘The police went round and she has since made a statement to them. She is completely devastated by it all.’

Greenwood has had a series of run ins with his club team following his ‘general tardiness’.

In September 2020, Greenwood got sent home by England boss Gareth Southgate after he and Phil Foden broke Covid protocols by inviting two women back to the hotel in Iceland.

Both issued public apologies, with Greenwood promising to learn from his ‘huge mistake’, and this latest news coming out has just reminded people of his earlier rules break.

MailOnline state that Greenwood also got into further trouble by hosting loud house parties throughout the coronavirus lockdown at a secret address.

He rented the three-storey home through Airbnb ‘five or six times’ during the pandemic with neighbours complaining that they were kept awake.

Greenwood was still at the school when he became Manchester United’s youngest ever player in the Champions League, where he made his debut against PSG at 17 years old.

Described as United’s ‘new wonder kid’, he broke into the first team squad in 2020, scored ten goals before football stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In total, Greenwood has six goals and two assists in 24 matches in all competitions for the Red Devils this season.

He started his career at the club’s academy and has played once for the England national team.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust posted on Twitter: ‘The club has now confirmed that Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice. MUST fully support the decision of the club in this regard.’

What is sexual assault?

A sexual assault is any sexual act that a person did not consent to, or is forced into against their will. It is a form of sexual violence and includes rape (an assault involving penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth), or other sexual offences, such as groping, forced kissing, child sexual abuse, or the torture of a person in a sexual manner.

Sexual assault is an act that is carried out without the victim’s active consent. This means they didn’t agree to it.

It is not uncommon for a victim of sexual assault to have no physical injuries or signs of their assault. But sexual assault is still a crime and can be reported to the police in the same way as other crimes.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales for the year ending March 2021 showed that the police recorded 148,114 sexual offences, encompassing rape (55,696 cases) and sexual assault, and also sexual activity with children.

Most sexual assaults are carried out by someone known to the victim. This could be a partner, former partner, relative, friend or colleague. The assault may happen in many places, but is usually in the victim’s home or the home of the perpetrator (the person carrying out the assault).

Sexual violence or assault can happen to anyone of any age.

If you’ve been sexually assaulted

If you’ve been sexually assaulted, there are services that can help. You don’t have to report the assault to the police if you don’t want to. You may need time to think about what has happened to you.

However, consider getting medical help as soon as possible for any injuries and because you may be at risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you want the crime to be investigated, the sooner a forensic medical examination takes place, the better.

Try not to wash or change your clothes immediately after a sexual assault. This may destroy forensic evidence that could be important if you decide to report the assault to the police.

Where you go for help will depend on what’s available in your area and what you want to do. For specialist medical attention and sexual violence support, whether you decide to have a forensic medical examination or not, your first point of call is a sexual assault referral centre (SARC).

The following services will also provide treatment or support, and can refer you to another service if you need more specialist help (such as a SARC):
