Luton Town’s new stadium gets the green light after ambitious plans are approved by council

Luton Town’s new Power Court stadium gets the green light after ambitious plans are approved by the Luton Borough Council.

The Hatters, who currently sit 19th in the Championship with 22 points form 21 games played and are 5 points above the drop zone, has officially received approval for its ambitious plans to construct a new 25,000-capacity stadium at the Power Court site in Luton town centre.

The detailed planning application was approved by Luton Borough Council’s planning committee, marking a significant milestone for the club’s long-term vision to move from their historic Kenilworth Road stadium to a new, sustainable home.

This approval is seen as a step towards securing a financial and competitive future for the club, with the new stadium expected to be completed by 2027.

The project is part of a larger regeneration plan for the area, which includes the development of a hotel, music venue, and additional commercial and residential spaces.

We are delighted to confirm that Luton Borough Council’s planning committee have approved the planning application for our 25,000-capacity Power Court Stadium to be built!

All attention will be on events at Luton Town Hall this evening as the club’s detailed planning application for its new Power Court stadium is set to be determined by Luton Borough Council’s planning committee.

Luton Town Football Club’s development company, 2020 Developments, formally submitted the application for a new 25,000-capacity stadium in September and the scheme as a whole represents a major opportunity to secure long lasting regeneration for the town centre.

The hybrid planning application contains full detail on the stadium and also includes an updated outline submission for an adjacent hotel and music venue. This development then sits within the wider 20-acre site owned by 2020 Developments which in turn will involve new areas of high quality public realm, 1200 apartments and new commercial areas.

Luton Town and 2020 Developments Chief Executive Officer, Gary Sweet said: “This planning committee date is another defining milestone in the delivery of our long-held plans for a new stadium. With its unique design and key characteristics we’ve incorporated and brought across from our much-loved Kenilworth Road, it really is tremendously exciting to address members of the planning committee and, hopefully, gain their formal approval”.

2020 Developments Chief Operating Officer Michael Moran commented “Having already secured outline planning consent in 2019, we have worked through a complete re-design of the stadium concept alongside bringing forward the wider site where we are busy now with groundworks and putting the necessary infrastructure in place. After this evening it’s hoped the goal of having an iconic stadium in the heart of the town centre is one step closer”

@LutonLabGroup: “We are delighted with tonight’s approval of the detailed planning application of Power Court. Our Labour council have been working closely with the club for a number of years to make this dream a reality to revitalise a huge chunk of our town centre.

Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Inclusive Growth Labour Cllr James Taylor said:

“Tonight’s approval was a significant step towards the Hatters finally managing to realise their long held ambition to move into a modern new stadium in the heart of our town centre.

“We as a Labour council understand the importance of the club to our town both economically and culturally. Which is why we have been working closely with them make it a reality. We have never been as close as we are right now.

“This project will sit alongside our own £120 million stage development and will see millions invested and regenerate our centre and drive growth in our night time economy and deliver on a decades old ambition.”

@Ed_P0d: Finally, the news Luton needs. Finally, a new stadium and the catalyst for regeneration, that could make Luton a destination place for the future. Finally.

@PaulSparks1964: At long, long last that plan, that has lasted all of my 50 years following and supporting #LTFC, has been given the green light. Let’s get the thing built so we can turn the page and move forward again. #COYH 🎩 🎩

@kevlennon1: Great news this. Big credit to LBC who have proven a barrier with previous planning attempts & big kudos to @LoyalLutonSC who started charm work with them well before 2020 was even an idea. Not forgetting the legend KC looking down on us from above for his huge contributions 🙏🏻🙏🏻

@ltfc_rhys: Been told so many times that it’s gonna happen but now I’m finally starting to believe it, can’t wait for power court. A huge day in our club’s history today

@PanameHatter: This is just huge. The club’s future secured for many, many generations. 70 years in the making and it’s done. Hats off to 2020. They took over with the aim of making us a self-sustainable Championship club and this will do that, plus a foundation to push on.

@jasminapplebyig: Bittersweet. Happy for the club to be moving forward but knowing that my kids will never see the Kenny makes me feel sad. By the time they’re old enough to have memories, it will probs be flats 🤣

@LutonTownExile: What a night this is.
