Luton mascots on the wind up cheekily mocking Bolton fans in the away end

Luton Town mascots were on the wind up again, this time cheekily mocking Bolton Wanderers fans in the away end at the weekend.

The infamous mascots Happy Hatty and Happy Harry are often seen going down the side the The Oak Stand entertaining supporters ahead of matches.

But they do get ip to a little bit of mischief, and this was the case for the FA Cup Third Round clash, playing out to a goalless draw at the weekend.

One Bolton fan was left surprised at what the mascot did prior to the game, @BrandonBWFC2022 tweeted: “Never have I in my life seen a football mascot call multiple fans in the away end fat bastards.”

The game last weekend saw the League One side Bolton hold out against Premier League opposition; Alfie Doughty struck the woodwork and Andros Townsend and Jordan Clarke came close for hosts.

But a replay is needed, and will take place in the week of January 15, and the winners of that tie will take on either Crystal Palace or Everton, who also drew 0-0. See the Fourth Round draw HERE.

“All we want to do is make our town and our support proud of the football team again and I think we’re a long way to doing that,” Wanderers’ boss Ian Evatt said.

“It’s an extra game but why not? We’re in the hat. We will have to manage the extra game. It wasn’t win or bust today.

“We want to be competitive and stay in it and hopefully this will be financially rewarding for us as a football club, which is important as well.

“I would love us to sell that out and make it a really intense atmosphere, the same as Luton fans did for us today. In the second half they were almost sucking that ball into that goal, but we stood up to it and we deserve a replay and I’m looking forward to that game.

“I’m delighted with large parts of today and I think a draw was a fair result.

“I think in the second half we had to ride our luck at times, but I’ve said a lot that hard work puts you where good luck can find you and we defended our box really well.

“I was delighted with the first half and I think we edged it really. We had some really important moments we didn’t quite take but I think we were comfortable with what we were trying to do and what the plan was.

“At the start of the second half they had a spell, which they’re going to do – being a Premier League team. There were parts of that we could have managed better and maybe lost a little bit of belief but we defended our box superbly and in the last 10 minutes we came into it again.

“We just didn’t quite have that moment but I’m so pleased with the performance and we should take nothing but credit and positives for what we’ve done today.

“We gave as good as we got. Luton are a really good team and I have a lot of respect for their manager. We will look forward to the next game and go again.”

Luton boss Rob Edwards said: “It was disappointing in the end with the final result. I saw a performance that I thought we started the game very well, the first five or six minutes, then I thought we stopped playing with our normal intensity. It allowed them to get a foothold in the game.

“It’s different. There were different things asked of us today. We were going to be more dominant with the ball, and when we have that, we’ve got to know when to speed the game up at the right times, and we just lost that a little bit in the first half.

“I thought we regained it in the second half, and were the dominant team. I thought the game was really at only one end, so I was pleased with the second half performance.

“We created one or two chances, we hit the woodwork, we’ve had a nailed-on penalty go against us. It’s a penalty on Alfie. I don’t know what the point of VAR is if they aren’t going to over-turn that. I never moan about decisions, you know that, but that was a mistake.

“But look, if we aren’t going to score it’s important that we keep a clean sheet. We’ve done that. We are going to have to change the schedule now and we are going to have to go and do it all over again.”

As Luton see their league game at Burnley brought forward to Friday night, ahead of a midweek replay at Bolton the following week, Edwards says: “We were planning to give the players a rest tomorrow, but they’ll have to come in now, we’ll recover and we’ll build towards the game on Friday. We knew there was a chance of that happening, and that’s it, we’ll deal with it.”

On Bolton, Edwards said: “I thought they were good. They were exactly what I thought they’d be.

“They looked to try and take the ball. I thought it was hard for them against our press then to try and get any control really, so they are going to try and miss the press and go a little bit longer, but we competed well on the firsts and seconds, and it allowed us to get good control in the game.

“But if you allow them tine and space they will play, they will still try to do it even when they haven’t got some time and space. They are brave and they are well coached. They are a good team.

“We were better today, and we should be, but we haven’t won the game and now we’ve got to go and do it at their place, which will be tough. We know that.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for them. They have done a really good job, they are doing a really good job, you could see how tough it was today.

“The FA Cup is unique. That’s why it’s a great cup competition, isn’t it? At least it’s not thrown up an upset today, but we know now we’ve got to go and do a job to make sure we’re in the hat for the next round.”
