Luton keeper sent off after two yellows in three minutes and takes out Portsmouth players

Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski gets sent off after picking up two yellows in three minutes and takes out Portsmouth players.

The Hatters saw the shot stopper receive marching orders in the first half, the first yellow first for time-wasting and then for clattering Pompey forward Paddy Lane outside the penalty area on the 31st minute.

Despite being down to 10-men, Luton held out for a point in a goalless draw at Fratton Park, Portsmouth having most of the possession throughout.

Carlton Morris and Adebayo both forced saves from Pompey keeper Will Norris while Kaminski tipped a Conor Shaughnessy header over the bar in early chances.

Luton came closest to opening the scoring after the break with Elijah Adebayo seeing his shot go wide when played in on goal.

Then came the Belgian keeper’s yellow cards, booked by referee Jon Busby for repeatedly taking too long over goal-kicks, then sent off after sprinting off his line to deal with a long ball over the top and took out Lane.

Luton boss Rob Edwards took Morris off and brought on back-up goalkeeper James Shea.

Booked: Shaughnessy, Pack, Dozzell

Subs not used: Archer, Swanson, Lowery, Devlin, Clout

Luton (3-4-1-2): Kaminski; Walters, Mengi, Bell (Holmes 77); Ogbene, Baptiste (Mpanzu 87), Clark, Doughty; Chong; Adebayo (Taylor 77), Morris (c) (Shea 34)

Sent off: Kaminski (two yellow cards)

Booked: Clark, Chong

Subs not used: Johnson, Francis-Clark, Chigozie, Nelson, Woodrow

Speaking about the Thomas Kaminski incident, Rob Edwards said, per Luton Today: “Let’s talk about the initial booking first. I don’t know the full ruling, I think it’s crazy, I do. I’m the one telling them in training, to just wait and assess because we’re looking to try and build if we can.

“We had an extra person in there, we’re trying to assess which pass to make, who is going to try and press for them, so we can try and find the spare man and go and break the line, speed the game up there and not maybe just go big into all the bodies. So it’s my fault, but we’re not trying to waste time. It’s early in the game, the way we were playing shows we’re not trying to waste time. It’s crazy and if you’re going to book anyone, book Teden, because Teden’s the one on the ball waiting.

“So there’s the first one and then the second one, he’s trying to do the right thing that he sees in that moment, but football is about split second decisions. He’s decided to come out and try and sweep it, I’ve not seen it back and the ref deems it’s a foul and a booking, but that one I’m not complaining about. The initial one I am and then we had to deal with it.”

On if seeing Kaminski receive his first caution would make him alter his approach on restarts, Edwards added: “Everyone does it though, everyone. Are we going to change football? No, we’re not going to change. The fans were going nuts, the bench as well, that was why. We’re not trying to waste time, I’m really angry with it, really angry with it, what are we supposed to do?

“Otherwise Brighton’s goalkeeper, or (Manchester) City’s goalkeeper would be booked every single game and then if they carry on doing what they’re doing they’ll get sent off if you go by the letter of the law. Sheasy late on, because he (Busby) had already sent someone off, took 40-odd seconds towards the end there managing it and nothing happened.”

Pompey boss John Mousinho said, per Portsmouth The News: ‘I’m slightly disappointed not to have picked up all three points.

‘The first half hour was frantic and a really good game of Championship football.

‘Luton caused us a couple of problems early on but we grew into the game and all of a sudden looked a real threat.

‘We got the ball down and played some really good football. The threat we were causing Luton and the space we were creating behind them ultimately resulted in the keeper being sent off.

‘We played really well for half an hour and the first half I was really pleased with.

‘In the second we huffed and puffed but didn’t have quite enough quality.

‘We got the ball into the final third well enough and Luton dropped off. We got the ball to our wide players and our attacking players, but it was very compact in the box.

‘We didn’t quite have enough in terms of quality and execution and sometimes decision making.

‘It’s a really interesting one and it’s one we have to take on board as a coaching staff, because we set the side to take on a really good Luton team who are aggressive in their press.

‘We did it really well for half an hour, but I don’t think we expected so early to completely dominate possession.

‘There’s loads and loads to improve on and it’s a positive that we’re disappointed not to have more points on the board.

‘We need to be better. We didn’t miss chance after chance after chance.

‘We created a huge amount of opportunities and got into good areas without creating chances. We have to break that down and get better at that.

‘We defended really well when we had to, but everyone knows and it’s no secret that we come away from playing here at Fratton Park disappointed not to have picked up three points. It’s something that we have to build on next week.’
