Luton fans amuse themselves by mocking Man City for empty seats at the Etihad

Luton fans amuse themselves by mocking Man City for the empty seats seen at the Etihad during the Premier League meeting at the weekend.

A number of chants were heard coming from the away end, poking fun as the stadium started emptying mid-game with Man City going on to win 5-1.

An own goal by Daiki Hashioka just two minutes in but the hosts ahead, with Mateo Kovacic (64′), Erling Braut Haaland (76′ pen), Jeremy Doku (87′) and Joško Gvardiol (90’+3) also getting on the scoresheet,

Luton got on a consolation goal through Ross Barkley (81′), and despite the heavy defeat, Luton fans stayed behind to applaud their side come full time.

Rob Edwards speaking to Match of the Day after Luton’s Premier League defeat to Manchester City: “It proved to be [a difficult game].

“A long afternoon, the longest game of football I have ever had.

“We are really depleted at the moment, it was a difficult afternoon for us. The players gave everything and we didn’t get off to the best of starts.

“A great save for Thomas and then a deflected volley off Daiki Hashioka’s head. They wore us down in the end but I cannot fault the players – it is done.

“We now have five huge games that we can get ourselves out of it, we almost have to write this off.

“They scored three worldies, there was lots of shots and Thomas had to make some saves.

“We kept going and they got the last couple later on when they wore us down. The players never dropped their heads and we wont accept that. What gives me belief is our fans right with us till the end and we are going to need them.”

On injury concerns: “We have one fit centre-back at the moment. To go up against City it was always going to be difficult.

“One of our strongest strengths we have such a together group and the spirit is there. It is the biggest defeat we have had this season.

“It will not change how we feel we will learn from it and it can make us better at a group – it will not knock us.

“We want to come to places like this and we want to come next year. We are in with a good chance of doing that . It’s learning from it and taking some of the positives – there was a few.”

Pep Guardiola spoke to MOTD after Manchester City’s victory against Luton: “Not surprised at all, I know them [players who featured who are not regulars].

“You can not play the same people it is impossible, the three guys [Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji and Josko Gvardiol] who played in Madrid they were incredible.

“It is a privilege to be here after many years to compete for the competitions.”

On Luton: “How many chances could we not score. It was not easy, but in the games you have to close it [out].

“More [chances], more and more then you don’t win. We were patient and we didn’t concede much.”

On Josko Gvardioal and Mateo Kovacic: “What a connection we have!

“Josko with the right foot is unbelievable, he feels more confident with the right foot – when he attacks inside he is a threat.

“Now he is a much better player and he doesn’t lose balls, at the beginning he lost balls.

“Incredible guys [Gvardioal and Kovacic]

“Everyone has permission to score and it’s so important.”

On being at the top of the table: “For a few hours.

“Tomorrow they have to play, all we can do is win our games and if we cannot do it we congratulate them.

“All you have to do is win games and we will try game by game.”

There was plenty of reaction online as Luton fans amuse themselves by mocking Man City for empty seats at the Etihad…

@SSE_LTFC: Won all the trophies imaginable, have all the money in the world, beat us 5 1 and still managed to get rattled by Kats tweet 😂 Come on Man City fans 😂 #LutonTown #COYH #PremierLeague

@sidtabib: Stayed until the end top class! Most away fans leave the Etihad by half time

@DavePickering4: Totally agree with you. My dad was a City fan from 1930 to the day he died. He brought me up despising clubs that buy success and would have hated what this lot have become. There is no soul there; all manufactured success. I don’t watch the games as they’re largely pointless.

@bignath_1975: I’m a Forest fan and yeah I see your point. It must be really boring winning trebles and playing the likes of Madrid, awful time for those fans poor lads.

@Maxsxanlon: Hate this ‘what minute is this’ crap. Winning a game at home and you all leave before full time. Embarrassing 🤣

@bhafc_myles: luton atmosphere over man city atmosphere everyday

@jfg96_: Rubbish teams coming to the Etihad and expecting a great atmosphere when it’s just a routine fixture for us is always fun

@thecityshack: It’s always funny when teams like Luton come to city and expect the atmosphere to be amazing 😂 it’s Luton.

@francois19930: She’s got a point, I remember almost falling asleep last season when we beat United in a cup final then completed the treble in Istanbul a week later

@SSE_LTFC: Considering you’ve won all the trophies imaginable, good to know City are so easily rattled still 😂

@C80192134: I wouldn’t concern yourself too much as it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever play us again

@Azul_76: City fan here. Far from bored. Thanks for your concern though.

@DavyGrime: Although I don’t get why people leave early, I don’t get your point. It’s Luton FFS. We’ve got Real Madrid on Wednesday

@PeteEvans4: The Luton fans were an absolute disgrace again today. All they were bothered about was singing about and slagging City off, rather than support their own team !

@andyleg66: I was in Madrid Tues, Etihad yesterday, back at Etihad Weds & Wembley Sat. Madrid x 2, Chelsea & Luton. If anyone chooses to miss one of those 4 guess which one it would be? Far from hating it, I’m still fucking loving every minute of us winning it all whilst pissing the rest off

@BryanRich22: It’s near end stop being sad.. when you got a but to get.. city have great support and it’s people like you.. 54,000 sold out every home please don’t get like the red cartel clubs

@BazaritoDorito: City’s tourists have flights to catch 🤣

@Jammiest_Dodger: Was there till the end 🧡 Luton till I die

@SimonRonald1: The atmosphere was awful from there fans. We were loud and proud

@EmSmyth0107: Poor from the city fans leaving at 85 minutes, mostly glory hunters and tourists. But Luton fans singing all game, love my team 🧡🧡

@LTFC_1885: Something that money can’t buy. Proper support for a proper club.

@swinny1965: More cliched nonsense. Shame. Spoke to a few LTFC fans on the tram to the ground yesterday, sound bunch. Enjoy the rest of the season.

@gjcmcfc1978: Tbf it’s Luton at home hardly gets the pulses racing 🙄

@geoffgerrard: Sorry to be a bore, BUT we play Real Madrid on Wednesday followed by Chelsea on Saturday the cost to our fans with travel is immense, playing Luton with some empty seats doesn’t matter, did that sink in! Champions league, FA cup semi final 👍
