Five days ago, news of his transfer first emerged, with Pete O’Rourke saying after the Ammies ‘agree a fee’ with Doncaster for Molyneux.
He decided not to sign a new deal with Doncaster, and instead dropped down a league, to boost Salford’s promotion hopes, with his new club the favourites to win the League Two title.

Salford City spoke of their excitement in a statement, saying on their website: “The winger, who has regularly been a top performer with numerous Player of the Year awards, has signed a multi-year deal to become the eighth new face this summer.
“Across the last four seasons, Luke has registered 40 goals and 37 assists in more than 200 appearances for Doncaster and was influential in their 2024-25 League Two title-winning season with 16 goals and 12 assists.
“Now 28, Luke started his career at Sunderland before moving onto Hartlepool United where he also won a promotion back to the Football League.
“With the 2026-27 season approaching fast for Salford, the winger is clear about what his target is again at the AIG Stadium.
“The deal is subject to approval by the EFL and the FA, but in the meantime welcome to the AIG Stadium Luke!”
He said: “I’m just looking forward to getting started, implement what the Gaffer wants, his style of play is going to be something new and I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got a lot of good players in this squad, a lot of exciting players, and the goal for us is promotion.
“I’d say I’m exciting, like to get the fans off their feet, be effective with goals and assists. That’s something that I strive for, I work towards, and has been drilled into me.
“I try and set up as many goals as possible, score as many goals as I can, and I think that’s something that’s important, especially in a team that wants to get promoted and hopefully I can bring plenty to this Club.”
Doncaster Rovers said when confirming his departure on their website: “Luke Molyneux has left Doncaster Rovers to join League Two side Salford City for an undisclosed fee, bringing an end to four years at Club Doncaster Sports Village.
“The 28-year-old winger arrived from Hartlepool United back in 2022 and leaves having made 170 appearances during his time with the club.
“Molyneux was a key figure in Rovers’ promotion from League Two in 2024/25, a campaign in which his form was rewarded with a clean sweep of the club’s individual honours – Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Player of the Year. He carried that form into League One last term, making 52 appearances and contributing eight goals and eleven assists as Rovers settled back into the third tier.
“With a year still left on his contract, Molyneux opted against signing a new deal this summer, bringing his four-year spell at the club to a close.
“Everyone at Club Doncaster would like to thank Luke for his efforts during his time with the club and wish him well for the future.”

Fans react after Salford ‘agree a fee’ with Doncaster for Luke Molyneux
Here’s how fans reacted as Luke Molyneux speaks for the first time after leaving Doncaster and joining Salford…
@RyanHemsworthYT: Good bit of business, made a profit, signed a younger replacement for free and a good contract, got rid of someone who didn’t wanna be here. He’s on more money, win win!
@Matt_Walker96: All the best to him, produced some unreal moments for us and a huge reason we’re in League 1. Can’t begrudge him going and getting a good contract
@Matty_Vickers: @LukeMolyneux3 such a backwards move. Very gutted to see you go. Could have been a fan favourite after Copps retired. #drfc
@mcolley98: Luke’s first interview will go something like “I wa$ r€all¥ attract€d to the proj€ct $alford ar€ building”
@FranchiseLewis: Jesus lord. If they don’t go up this season..
@challo_drfc: Great ambition mols lad (money grab) good luck (not)
@CaptainScho: Annual reminder to #DRFC supporters that footballers are employees too and have very shorter careers. In real life, if you’re offered 2x your wage for the same role then 8/10 times you’d take it, especially if it sets your family up for life. The fella owes us nowt. Good luck.
@PeterDrfc: all the best mols, thanks for the memories ❤️
@MichaelFerns12: Donny fans rightly bitter about this on his day unbelievable but to drop a league for money shows his priority in the game but it’s a short career so who could blame him for doubling his wages?
