It came with England batsman Jonny Bairstow being run-out in controversial circumstances as day five at Lord’s is marred.

Australia had been closing in on a 2-0 lead in the series, Bairstow made his way out of his crease for the end of the over, only for Australia’s Alex Carey to knock down the stumps.

Boos could be herd ringing out around the ground, but the Aussies didn’t remove their appeal and Bairstow was given out.

Piers Morgan tweeted in anger: “You cannot be serious??!! Australia, that is pathetic. How can you possibly want to win an Ashes Test match like that?”

Stuart Broad, who replaced Bairstow to partner up with Ben Stokes, could be heard telling Carey: “You’ll forever be remembered for that.”

England bowler Jofra Archer, currently injured, tweeted: “Wow.”

Jamie Carragher raged: “Brilliant from Stokes & Broad, and the fella in the long room! Joke that the commentary team are justifying the dismissal of Bairstow, he’s not trying to gain an advantage.”
