Team news: injuries, suspensions and availability

Liverpool: Liverpool remain without Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Dominik Szoboszlai. Florian Wirtz needs a check after coming off against Brighton, while Victor Munoz is also a doubt. Any changes elsewhere may reflect rotation rather than an injury.

Chelsea: Cole Palmer is suspended following his dismissal against Tottenham. Reece James and Emiliano Martinez remain out, with fitness checks also needed on Joao Pedro, Pep Chavarria, Emmanuel Emegha and Jamie Gittens. Their final availability had not been confirmed when this preview was updated.

Match preview: where the tie could be decided

Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League, one place above Chelsea. Their recent 2–0 league win over Brighton and 4–3 European victory over Villarreal show both a capacity to control a home match and the attacking quality to survive a more volatile one. The 3–1 win over Tottenham in the previous round is another indication that this cup run has already required them to overcome strong opposition.

Chelsea’s 2–0 win at Everton followed a 2–0 home league defeat by Tottenham, giving the visitors a mixed immediate league picture. Their 6–3 cup victory over Leeds was a striking attacking result, but the goals conceded also make it an imperfect model for a trip to Anfield. They need enough ambition to threaten Liverpool while avoiding a match in which every lost ball produces another dangerous attack.

The latest league meeting finished 1–1. That supports the expectation of a competitive tie, without dictating its outcome. Liverpool will want their home pressure to produce clear chances rather than simply territory; Chelsea need to retain a threat that forces the hosts to consider what happens behind their attacks. If neither finds a winner in 90 minutes, penalties will decide who stays in the competition.

How both teams reached the fourth round

Liverpool beat Tottenham 3–1 in round three. Chelsea’s 6–3 win over Leeds was one of the round’s most open ties. The quarter-final draw follows this match on Sky Sports, so the winners will quickly learn their next opponents.

When is the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw?

The draw takes place on Wednesday 28 October, after Liverpool v Chelsea on Sky Sports. Dave Jones hosts, with Conor Coady and Graeme Le Saux making the draw. There is no fixed draw time: the 8pm match could go to penalties. Quarter-final ties are scheduled for the week commencing 14 December 2026.

This fourth-round tie has no extra time: if the scores are level after 90 minutes, it goes straight to penalties. The prediction and supporter poll above refer to the score after 90 minutes, rather than which team qualifies.

What is the financial reward for a cup run?

There is no fixed prize-fund payment for winning this fourth-round tie. The reported competition awards are £100,000 for the winners, £50,000 for the runners-up and £25,000 for losing semi-finalists. Those are awards for the finishing stage, rather than a cumulative payment for every round.

The clubs also share net gate receipts after permitted match costs. Television selections can bring facility fees, with the amount depending on the round and broadcast arrangements. Those sources of income are separate from prize money.
