A Liverpool fan is back home after waking up from a coma and had a message sent to him by Steven Gerrard while unconscious in intensive care.
Back in June 2024, Ashley Jones uploaded what had been sent by the former Liverpool player, and captioned it: “I couldn’t respect a man more than Steven Gerrard. Can’t explain how much this means to us all. You’ve been told straight now dad, COME ON AND WAKE UP.”
In the message, Steven Gerrard said: “Hello, Keith. This is Steven Gerrard. Just wanted to drop you a message.
“I know you’re a massive Liverpool fan and I know you’ve supported me for many years. So I want to send this message to you to ask you to wake up. Okay? It’s very Important for your family. Okay? They’re all at your side. They all want to show you the support. They all love you to bits. And they want you to wake up for many reasons. For your girls. But also for Albie. Okay? They want you to take him to his first Liverpool match. Okay?
“Liverpool are obviously flying at the moment mate. So come on. Let’s wake up. Let’s see ya. Okay? And when you do. Okay. I promise I’ll come and see you face to face. Okay?
“We can have a good catch up. But come on, mate. Let’s wake up now. Okay? Your family needs you. Okay? They need you with you. Okay? Take care, mate. Bye.”

Keith Jones had been unresponsive in a garden, was in a coma, stable in ICU, unconscious in intensive care. Gerrard then sent the message.
On the 29th of June, there was an update on Keith: “Today, Keith has received a wonderful message from his main man, his hero and lookalike and wished for son, Steven Gerrard, omg! What a man! We can’t believe his thoughtfulness and kindness Keith has made involuntary movement today, however we are unsure if it is seizures.
“We are cautiously taking this as a positive. He remains on a ventilator and unconscious. Please keep all the love and positivity flowing, we can feel it holding us up.
“We love him so much ❤️ we are blown away by your support, it means the world to Ashley, Elle, Albie and I . Thank you, your love and support is so appreciated 🙏🙏🙏👏💔😭❤️”
It was on the 5th of July that he had woken up, but on the 8th, his condition deteriorated, becoming disoriented and confused with a review to see if palliative care is a approach.
The 10th of July he remained at the ITU, remained critical.
On the 12th, MRI scans showed he had suffered ‘several strokes on the outside of his brain and a big one in the centre. The area that has been affected is the one that supports movement, his heart, breathing.
An update read: “We were told he would probably never be able to breathe for himself, talk or move and 4x days ago were called by an ITU consultant to have the end of life talk.
“The fact he woke up from an 11 day coma has shocked staff and family.
“Dad has been able to slightly and very quietly talk. He has moved his arms to try and hug us. He has also been able to breathe for himself.
“As a result of coming out of the coma dad has delirium. This has caused him to be very confused, distressed and angry at times. As you can imagine our adrenaline is all over the show… seeing improvements which we get massively excited about but then having the realisation that he is still very, very unwell and has a long way to go.
“Thank you for all of your support and kindness. Dad has continued to fight the odds. We hope he can keep this up and we can eventually get him back home with mum and Freddie, where he belongs.
“Mum wants me to pass on how grateful she is. She is really tired and focused on dad so wants to apologise if she hasn’t got back to anyone.”
Then on the 20th of July, some good news: “Dad is still very frail but fighting. He is being fed by an NG tube and has had a referral to Walton Neuro which we are made up about.
“Dad is speaking but very quietly and it is hard to understand but if you focus on his mouth you can. He is very low and upset about his speech and not being able to walk (at the moment 🤞🏻) We keep reminding him little steps. He has come this far, he can keep going.
“The last 3x weeks feel like an absolute blur to us all. I am so sorry if I have been bad at keeping in touch. It’s been the hardest time of our lives and I can’t remember who I have spoken too, replied too, or updated 🫶🏻
“We were told dad’s brain scans were awful and on paper he shouldn’t be alive. He is our miracle man.”
On the 27th of August: “Well it has been a very emotional day.
“We have fought relentlessly for dad to be given the chance he deserves at rehabilitation, to help build muscle etc and have the best chance at regaining some independence.
“At todays meeting with the hospital team we finally got what we had fought for. Dad has been transferred to a rehab where he will work at walking and strengthening areas affected by the strokes.
“We have all cried tears of happiness, dad included. From coma, strokes, end of life talk… dad is now making progress.
“Dad has got here with all the love and support from you all.
“I am so proud of my dad.
“I am also so proud of my mum. She has been determined when exhausted and strong when she has wanted to break down like the rest of us have. She has held our family together.
“I feel very lucky to have my family. I can’t believe we have got here from the hell of intensive care.
Next steps…. potentially a few months of rehabilitation and then we hope to GET DAD BACK AT HOME WITH MUM 💪🏻💪🏻”
On the 5th of September: “Just an update on Dad. He has become really unwell over the last few days. He has been especially poorly today and been transferred to an urgent medical assessment unit in a general hospital. We are unsure what exactly is going on at the moment but it is similar symptoms to the day he first collapsed.
“Poor dad deserves a break, he just wants to be home, healthy and watching the footie. Taking it hour by hour again for now, so if no response that will be why.”
Then on the 21st of September: “Honestly never thought we would see the day this would happen. Our lovely dad is HOME ♥️🫶🏻 From having multiple strokes, being in a coma, to being told life support was being turned off, then being told he wouldn’t be able to survive infection…. now he’s HOME and ready to watch the match. Absolute madness.
“Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to us all. Wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy, it has been HELL but we’ve got through because of our lovely friends and family!
“Dad will be having physio and dialysis in a home based package of care. A lot of hard work to do but he has fought through the hardest!”
