Leicester City have reportedly drawn up a shortlist of possible candidates if they decide to sack Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Rob Dorsett tweeted: “Future of Ruud Van Nistelrooy at #lcfc up in the air with both sides uncertain about next season. There were impromptu discussions after the humbling 3-0 defeat to #nufc but on reflection both sides wanted RVN to continue for time being. Much may depend on how Lcfc finish season.
“Van Nistelrooy will meet #lcfc bosses this week to discuss future. Unlikely he will be in charge for next season but he doesn’t want to walk without compensation. If Leicester sack him now it will cause PSR problems in current financial year. Likely to stay for final 3 PL games.
“#lcfc have drawn up a shortlist of possible candidates if they decide to replace Van Nistelrooy – it includes Lee Carsley, Danny Rohl and Russell Martin, I’m told. Looks increasingly likely RVN will leave before next season, but more discussions will take place later this week.”
Meanwhile, Football Insider report that Leicester City are readying a move for Sean Dyche.

🚨 Leicester City are readying a move for Sean Dyche as they prepare for life after Ruud van Nistelrooy.
🚨 Dyche, 53, is believed to fit the bill given his proven managerial credentials, promotion-winning CV and style – which is seen as similar to ex-Foxes boss Nigel Pearson.… pic.twitter.com/z5idazdhOZ

Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy has apologised for Leicester City’s season, saying in a social media post: “At this point, I don’t even know what to say. No words I have can ever express my feelings of anger and sadness with the way this season has gone. There are no excuses.
“Collectively, as players and as a club, we failed. There is simply no hiding, and I refuse to entertain any suggestion of doing so.
“Having been at this club for so long, we’ve experienced so many highs and successes and this season has been nothing but miserable and for me personally, a total embarrassment. It hurts, and I know you’re feeling it too.
“To the fans: I’m sorry. Sorry we haven’t performed, and sorry we end the 2025 season with such a s**t show.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy had said there was no date set for talks with the club’s hierarchy over his future but knows time is of the essence.
“The club has to use this time, otherwise you will waste it,” he said. “In a situation like this, you have to sit very carefully with the club to discuss the matters.
“I’m focused and taking my responsibility to do the best things for things for the football club, the future and next season.
“Performances like Brighton and the Liverpool game are signs the players are willing to do that and finish the season the best way possible the new season will start and continue.
“We have to take responsibility and that’s what I’m doing for the next five weeks and after that we have to see.”
Boos from Leicester fans after relegation to Championship and plane protest banner
This is what Twitter users are saying as Leicester City ‘draw up shortlist of possible candidates’ if they sack Ruud van Nistelrooy…
@ChrisSansomee: And people wonder why there’s unrest towards the board… utter shit show
@thorpie54: Very poor on both fronts. We’ve clearly not negotiated well, and RVN wanting compensating after a disaster so large it’s broken all-time records is quite something. #lcfc
@lcfckini: I see the clubs vision is to try and bring in somebody with a clear system. What I would like is a manager who can also adapt said system to when we go back up to the PL. Danny Rohl is of course the preferred candidate but Martin and Carsley would be good provided they adapt.
@markmanderfield: What sort of professional organisation doesn’t put a break clause in place for relegation? Shambolic
@alexharris_92: Hope he refuses to leave tbh and we have to screw ourselves to pay compensation because we’re too stupid not to put a break clause into relegation to start with.
@JackWhitman_7: Russell Martin might just be the worst possible candidate in football for us. If the board gets him in that’s the final straw.
@JP__267: Why would he want to walk without compensation?
@TomHolland93: Our shit show of a club in a nutshell… Hands out a 2.5 year deal with no relegation clause & now can’t afford to sack him until June. Hindering progress for what is a vital summer for the club. We are run by complete fucking morons.
@Dan_1884: Wellens as manager, King as number 2. Pearson as DOF. Get the band back together we all know it makes sense. #lcfc
@AA_LCFC: Why wouldn’t you put a break clause just in case the appointment went wrong? Do they ever learn? And you have people supporting them. They will complain about PSR when sacking RVN will cost the club 4 million. All they had to do was put a release clause. The incompetence #LCFC
@nialllenihan: Absolute shit show
@RFox55_: I’d rather RvN over Martin for next season. Carsley or Rohl would be great. #LCFC
@JoseeephF1: Constant failure in financial management. Still defended and applauded.
