Boos from Leicester fans after relegation to Championship and plane protest banner

There were boos from Leicester fans after relegation back to the Championship and a plane protest banner in their defeat to Liverpool.

Before the match got underway, a plane flew over the King Power Stadium trailing a banner that read, “King Power Clueless. Sack The Board,” making clear the deep discontent with the club’s ownership and management, particularly aimed at director of football Jon Rudkin and chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.

The protest, funded by supporters who raised over £1,150, was the latest in a series of actions, including earlier marches and banners, reflecting anger over poor management decisions, a lack of transparency, and the club’s rapid decline since their 2016 Premier League triumph.

Fans voiced resignation and despair, with some booing at full-time while others left early or applauded Liverpool, signalling a sense of inevitability about the relegation.

Social media posts noted the banner’s impact, some suggested it successfully drew media attention to the club’s behind-the-scenes issues, potentially benefiting long-term prospects.

The atmosphere was described as subdued, with fans mentally adjusted to the reality of a second relegation in three seasons, leaving the club at a crossroads needing a rebuild.

Leicester defender Conor Coady, speaking to Sky Sports: “We’ve not been good enough all season. I thought we played quite well today, moved the ball well and nullified Liverpool – they’re a world-class side. But we look back on this season and it’s not been anywhere near good enough.

“We’ve got to look at ourselves as players in the mirror. We have to now, what’s happened has happened. We have to try and put this club in a better position come the summer because we haven’t been good enough.

“We’ve took a bit of stick and we’ll continue to take stick because it’s deserved. From minute one this season, we haven’t been at a level to fully compete in the Premier League and you have to be because it’ll chew you up and spit you out.

“It’s something we have to look at because we’re absolutely devastated.”

Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, speaking to Sky Sports about his future: “We have to use this time to get better.

“The club will continue and it is my job to put the club in the best place possible.”

On when he will find out if he stays at Leicester: “I hope soon. The new season starts very soon and preparation needs to start to move forward.

“The sooner, the better.”

Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about being relegated: “I’m very disappointed that it’s a definite now. We kept hoping and fighting, but over the last weeks we saw the gap growing.

“Then you see it coming, although we never gave up and we shifted the focus towards the future to use these games and finish the season as best as possible. Next season the Championship will start and it is my job to do the best things possible for the club.

“I’m working in the coming weeks, it is my job to do everything in the best interests of Leicester City.”

On his future: “I’m waiting on the clarity of the club and how they want to continue. It is the goal to lead the club. I have to wait on how the club sees things and take it from there.”

This is how social media users reacted amid boos from Leicester fans after relegation to Championship and the plane protest banner…

@Ashleypp1986: Get all these charlatans on massive wages out the club and rebuild the club on players who want to fight for the badge! The likes of Nelson, Alves,Fatuwu, build around them get rid of the likes of Faes, Daka, Justin, Kristenson, Coady, Reid, Ayew etc. Drain the swamp! #LCFC

@mnorman1985: What worries me personally is that normally, any relegation, it normally hurts. This seasons relegation has hit me differently. I don’t seem bothered as we could all see it coming months ago. Could all see it happening at Christmas. #lcfc

@JUSTINRAWDING: Somebody please tell me what the actual fuck these clowns have to laugh and joke about. Sack the incompetent fools that are Rudkin and Whelan Top or sell up so the new owners can before we end up in league 1 , from the envy of all to the laughing stock of English football. #lcfc

@Teagle_7: It’s difficult to explain how hurtful this is. At this point in the game I was trying to come to terms with the fact that all of the hope I had in May ‘24 had come to this abysmal, abject season and the sad state of my club. I care. This shows that they clearly don’t. #LCFC

@Huckerby24: For all the highs #LCFC has given me in the past, this season has been an absolute disaster!! From top to bottom. We haven’t competed at all and don’t get me started on the signings, let alone RV!! Thank fuck it’s nearly over!

@mnorman1985: Cooper plays part in #lcfc relegation too don’t forget:
Not playing Mavididi & Fatawu together
Not playing Ricardo
Blowing a 2-0 lead at palace (A)
Getting lucky results against spurs (H), Ipswich (A), Southampton (A)
Edouard, Ayew, Skipp & De Cordova-Reid his signings

@coller81: #lcfc club is stale from top to bottom. Those crying about the board are just as bad. Sat on their hands moaning and miserable every week. Season ticket holders need to own up to being shit as well.

@rudfoxes0205: Well deserved relegation, worst season in living memory, everything so fundamentally wrong at the football club, only the fans suffer, not sure with the current hierarchy anything will get better anytime soon. I’m not sad or angry we are down, just relieved @LCFC #LCFC

@ChrisLCFC1884: Relegated with 5 games to go. Shameful from top to bottom and if Rudkin doesn’t go and huge changes aren’t made this will just be the beginning. #LCFC

@imYash07: Feel really bad for Leicester City fans, gone are the glory days, from winning the PL 9 years ago (they wouldn’t be in for their 10th year anniversary) to being one of the strongest teams in England until 2021 to getting relegated to the Championship twice. Feel for fans #LCFC

@RFox55_: Very quiet this morning regarding #LCFC from fans. I feel so detached from the club to the point I don’t really care? I’ve been to every PL home & away game this season bar one to illness. Seeing this yesterday angered me, as I’ve easily spent 2k of my own money this season.

@tstafford92: Not even gutted and that says it all about this season. Top and Rudkin laughing after 80 mins, Ruud walking round laughing and brown nosing Liverpool. I despise this club and bunch of players at the moment. Drastic changes needed from top to bottom. #lcfc
