Leeds said in a statement on their website: The enhancement of Leeds United’s iconic Elland Road Stadium is officially under way!
Our home, our future and a momentous moment in the club’s 106-year existence, work has now begun on the West Stand starting with the removal of the Banqueting Suite, shaping the future of Elland Road.
Executives from Leeds United, the Leeds United Foundation and Leeds City Council, along with Club Ambassadors Stuart Dallas, Tony Dorigo and Eddie Gray were all in attendance to mark the occasion.
The new West Stand, which will be built over the top of the existing structure, is the first phase of transforming Elland Road into a UEFA Category 4 stadium, placing it among the elite venues in European football.
Increasing the capacity of the stadium is vital for the future, with the club having a now strong 32,000 Season Ticket waiting list.
It will also allow Leeds United, alongside civic partners, to bid to host major international tournaments and showcase events in the future, generating significant cultural and economic value for the Leeds City Region.

They can entice players to come to the football club. They can see that the club are going places. Passion for the football club is tremendous.”
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire: “This expansion here at the stadium acts as a catalyst to the wider regeneration of South Leeds and of course the South Bank.”
Robbie Evans, Managing Director at Leeds: “We know this area is in need of some redevelopment and needs an anchor, motivating factor to bring in mass transit, bring in businesses, bring in people to restaurants and to retail and mixed use. And stadiums can do that. And the bigger the stadium and easier to get to it, the better off that area becomes.”
Eddie Gray: “You know, it’s just tremendous. The noise, the passion of the fans. Unfortunately, think it’s the ground is not big enough.”
Morrie Eisenberg, chief business officer at Leeds: “This is big. This is something that Leeds United has wanted to do for many, many years. This is something that the city of Leeds deserves.
Robbie Evans: “UEFA Category 4 status immediately puts us on the top, most modernised, top level buildings in the entire country and in Europe, which means you’re going to host the World Cup, Euros, other major events in this building.
Morrie Eisenberg: “It’s important to mention all the public enterprises that without them this never would have happened. National Highways, LCC Highways, WICA and all of LCC is folks that really delivered this project for the city of Leeds.”
Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council: “I think that the key part of this has been the work between the live family group, between the club, between the council and between Mayor Tracy Bravingham developing the transit systems.”
Tracy Brabin: “This is pivotal to homes, jobs, regeneration, investment and confidence in our region. The tram is absolutely fundamental to this project.”
Eddie Gray: “What’s good for the city is good for Leeds United and what’s good for Leeds United is also good for the city.”
Here’s the social media reaction as Leeds post a video explaining the wider vision for Elland Road as work begins on their stadium expansion…
@JP162727: Monumental day in the clubs history
@LufcInAHeelHook: We need to make sure the atmosphere is not affected. It’s the most intimidating stadium that teams come to and it plays a massive role winning us points.
@WhitesHearts: get me that fucking tram built baby.
@road_lowfields: Call it the Eddie Gray Stand. Great project and the team service alone will be a huge boost for Beeston and our club.
@njglufc: Exciting times ahead! Just need to keep pushing on the pitch
@Sir_Cai7: Exciting times for Leeds, John Charles would be very proud, I think.
@kizcoyle: Absolutely buzzing watching this, United are back and this is just the start 🤍💙💛
@swfccom_: I must admit that’s going to be an absolutely lovely stadium in the flesh. This is the best thing Leeds could have done regarding Stadiums. Quite thankful another traditional ground is getting a refurb instead of knocking it down & starting from scratch. I hope we get this 1 day.
@bethgabriel_: Eddie Gray is so precious 🥺
