Leeds fans hit out at The Sun for ’embarrassing’ article

Leeds United fans have chosen to hit out at media outlet The Sun for their ’embarrassing’ article on their pre-season win at the weekend.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side faced a Portuguese outfit in preparation for their season opener against new Premier League champions Liverpool next week.

The West Yorkshire outfit initially fell behind to Pacos Ferreira just after the half hour mark before hitting back with an equaliser minutes before half time.

Barry Douglas sent in a free-kick, which was met by defender Pascal Struijk, who headed the ball into the back of the net against a side who finished 13th in Portugal’s top-flight last season.

After hitting them on the pressure 10 minutes into the second half, the Whites went in front for the first time in the game when Patrick Bamford provided an assist to Pablo Hernandez who cut back and fired home to put them 2-1 up.

It was Bamford again who was involved in the game’s third and final goal as he assisted Helder Costa who finished into the bottom corner on the 74th minute, making it 3-1.

The Sun wrote an article on the pre-season fixture, but made it look as though they were lucky to win, avoiding embarrassment having lost to Stoke City in a previous friendly which took place on the 1st of September.

The media outlet wrote: “Leeds come from behind to avoid second straight embarrassing pre-season defeat.”

That caused plenty of backlash from the newly promoted club’s supporters on social media, hundreds choosing to slam them for the article.

Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton spoke to LUTV following Saturday’s pre-season win over Pacos Ferreira.

“It was a good performance to finish off pre-season,” said Shackleton.

“Particularly in the second half we improved the things we didn’t do so well in the first half and we finished strong and that’s where we want to carry on next week.

“Myself and all of the lads are feeling fit, at the end of the game we were bang at it and our fitness showed in the last minutes of that game and everyone is feeling well.

“There were a few great team goals, we have seen a lot of that in the last two seasons and hopefully in the next few weeks there will be a few more of them.

“Pre-season has been tough as it should be, it’s been a bit different with the layout and a bit of a shorter one due to Covid-19, but we’ve all adapted really well and we’re ready to go next week.

“It’s kicked in we are a Premier League team and we’re going to start the season with one of the biggest challenges of the lot, but that’s exactly what we want, we want to play against and prove ourselves against the top teams in the world.”
