Sheffield Wednesday’s Lee Gregory has Fleetwood Town fans rattled after scoring twice in 45 seconds to seal an incredible hat-trick.

His goals helped guide the Owls back into the League One playoff zone as they came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the relegation-threatened Cod Army.

Fleetwood now face a final-day battle to try and avoid the drop as they sit above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Fleetwood broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Joe Garner headed home from Dan Batty’s free-kick.

Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan then clipped his effort against the post, with Callum Paterson’s shot from the rebound deflecting onto the other post.

In the 63rd minute, Owls substitute Josh Windass struck a side-footed effort disappointingly over the top.

Though that’s where their bad luck stopped as Gregory then hit home twice inside 45 seconds to turn the game on its head, nodding home Massimo Luongo’s cross, then calmly putting one in the back of the net from 22 yards, rare for him from outside the box, to snatch all three points that lifted them two points above seventh-placed Wycombe.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore said on Gregory’s hat-trick: “I am really pleased; I know that Greggors will get all the plaudits and rightly so because I thought they were three excellent finishes. He was sharp tonight. Credit to him and the team for getting back into the game.

“I thought we dominated the game from start to finish. We gave away two stupid, silly goals that put us on the back foot. We made the game a closer fought contest than it should have been.

“There were a few harsh words said at half-time, which I think were needed, and the group responded in the right manner.

“It was difficult to play against them. Once we scored the goal early on, we knew they would play a low block but that forced them to come out. They got 2-1 up and that meant they would drop back into their low block.

“We had a lot of possession and I still thought we got into a lot of threatening areas with their low block but it was the final pass and final ball.

“It was great work from Mass to stand the cross up and Greggors got the equaliser. I felt the pendulum swung on the pitch and it was great determination by Lee – all of his own doing – to win the ball back for the third but Pato’s run took the defender away to create the opportunity for Lee.

“There was a good determination on the pitch to not give anything away. The subs had a massive impact. Josh Windass and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing gave us some legs on the pitch. As they tired, it left spaces and pockets for us and we might have scored a fourth at the end with Josh. I am pleased with three points.”

Speaking to The Star after the game, Gregory said: “The gaffer gave us a bit of a b******ing at half time.

“And we needed that boost – because we knew that, with the players we’ve got, we can beat any team.

“So we just needed that boost and the gaffer gave us that.

“I think we came out in the second half, and you could see that we dominated it all over the pitch.

“We knew that if we got a second, then we’d get a third.”
