Lee Carsley announces his first England senior squad, with new names, and player Kieran Trippier confirms his retirement.
Yes, we begin with Trippier who today has announced his retirement from international football ahead of this afternoon’s squad announcement, having played 54 times for the England men’s team.
The 33-year-old played six of the Three Lions’ seven games en route to the Euro 2024 final – while his one goal for his country came in the 2-1 World Cup 2018 semi-final defeat to Croatia.
A moment no England fan will ever forget.

Trippier said in a post on Instagram: “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps.
“It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments
“I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.
“Thank you to all my team mates – we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament.
“I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future .
“And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments 🏴 Trips”

(New call-ups listed in italics)
Carsley said on taking the job: “Yeah, I feel privileged to be in the position. Obviously it’s a very prestigious job and following Gareth and Steve and the great job they’ve done, there’s a lot of responsibility. It’s something I’m really looking forward to with the challenge ahead in September and the games that are in front of us.”
On how important and helpful it’ll be working with with many of the senior squad players already, both internationally and at club level: “I think it definitely helps. I’ve got a relationship with those players and have known them quite a few years. There’s players that I don’t know as well, but I’m very much aware of them and I think we’ve got some outstanding players in the senior team. In the pathway, the level of players over the years has really improved and you can see that by the way we’ve done in major tournaments. The next step is winning, and that’s got to be the objective.”
On the job Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland did: “I think they did a great job and it was brilliant for me personally to work with them. They were so open and encouraging and very good people to work with, which is important obviously. The success that they had as well, it’s a shame they didn’t get across that final hurdle but the hope and the environment they created around England teams is a credit to both of them. It’s great that they’ve played such a pivotal role in English football and they’ll be remembered for a long time.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Lee Carsley announces his first England first team squad, new names, and player confirms retirement…
@Baz_UTD: Lee carsley said step aside Southgate we don’t have favourites here
@BrandDNA: With no Walker, Shaw or Trippier, I’m hoping we get to see TAA play in his natural position in Lee Carsley’s first England squad. Fingers crossed! #YNWA
@ElliotGCFC: Lee Carsley speaks very intelligently and directly. Impressed by his first press conference
@OllieGlanvill: Noni has a brilliant record under Lee Carsley in the U21s. But the timing of his hattrick definitely helped. Happy for him 🫡💙
@rhystakes: Lee Carsley I love you. I’m so happy for Noni, what a player.
@utdbrxy: Good team other than Grealish being forced in
@ColesLeights: Lee Carsley picking Jack Grealish and this fraud said he will pick players on form for their clubs! What has Grealish done to be selected? Favouritism yet again
@willreyner: CARSLEYYY
@CPFCKev2000: Where’s Adam Wharton?
@RatcliffeUtdEra: How on earth has Grealish been picked?! He’s done absolutely nothing!
@Gareth19801: This is how out of touch I am with the top end of the game, who on earth are Angel Gomes and Tino Livramento 🤔😅
@fusionjosh_: What is Carsley cooking here then
@SenorImp: Good to see Lee Carsley calling up some of his U-21 players who brought him success last summer -#England
@SWPalace: Sorry but some of those names ahead of Adam Wharton is egregious 🤣🤣🤣
@UTD_MNM: What has Grealish done that he deserves to be called back? Joke of a decision!
@UtdMicah: Jack Grealish has played 19 minutes from a possible 180 so far this season, and his only notable contribution was getting booked.
@StokeyyG2: Really good chance to see how some of the newer lads play at international level, I like it.
@JGNFFC_: nah that’s a beauty of a squad wtf 😭😭😭😭
@thomashammond__: Trippier out, Livramento in, where have I seen that before? Buzzing for Tino, thoroughly deserved too and honestly the call-up should’ve come earlier because he has been immense for as long as he’s been with us. Sure he’ll impress 👏 #NUFC
