League One ups, downs and playoffs confirmed on tense final day of 2022/23 season

In this article, we look at the League One ups, downs and playoffs with it all confirmed on what is a tense final day of 2022/23 season.

Going into the 12pm kick offs, we knew the title, playoff places and three relegation positions needed to be filled.

Plymouth will secure title with win at Port Vale – any slip-up would give Ipswich, who travel to Fleetwood, a chance.

Derby and Peterborough are both battling for the final play-off spot while Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Bolton are guaranteed a play-off place.

Three of Accrington Stanley, Cambridge, Morecambe, Milton Keynes Dons and Oxford United (realistically safe) will join Forest Green Rovers in being relegated.

HOW THE DAY PLAYED OUT:

GOAL: Port Vale 1-0 Plymouth Argyle – James Plant (3 mins)
James Plant just three minutes in sending the ball into the corner of the net from just inside the box. Means the title is heading for Ipswich

GOAL: Oxford 1-0 Accrington – Billy Bodin (8 mins)
Accrington’s unlikely hopes of staying up are looks even more impossible. Billy Bodin nets for Oxford to give them the lead early on against Stanley, meaning Accrington need a 17-goal swing and victory to have any chance of staying up.

GOAL: Barnsley 0-1 Peterborough Utd – Jonson Clarke-Harris (6 mins)
Peterborough need to win to keep their play-off hopes alive – and they’ve made the perfect start. Ephron Mason-Clark sending a cross into the box is taken down well by Jonson Clarke-Harris and he lashes a finish into the corner.

DISALLOWED GOAL – Barnsley 0-1 Peterborough (21 mins)
Moments after the Tykes have strong penalty shout turned down for handball, Barnsley have the ball in the net. James Norwood being played in and finishes clinically, but the linesman’s flag is up for offside.

GOAL: Cambridge 1-0 Forest Green – Harrison Dunk (25 mins)
A huge goal at the bottom of the table with Harrison Dunk heading the ball in for Cambridge from a corner and amid a scramble inside the Forest Green box. It lifts Cambridge to 20th and they’re safe as things stand and if it stays like this, MK Dons and Morecambe will join Forest Green and Accrington in relegation to League Two.

The youngster picks up a bouncing cross, just a yard behind the penalty spot and send the ball into the bottom right corner.

GOAL Bristol Rovers 1-1 Bolton Wanderers – Luca Hoole (28 mins)

GOAL: Port Vale 1-2 Plymouth – Joe Edwards (38 mins)
Brilliant link up play from Plymouth who came charging down the far right side of the pitch. A low cross came in and on hand was Joe Edwards at the back post and punches the ball into the top corner.

GOAL: Cambridge 2-0 Forest Green – Sam Smith (37 mins)
Cambridge extend their lead to keep the fight for survival in their own hands with a volley from Sam Smith, w=going unmarked on the right-hand side of the box and volleyed the ball from a tight angle into the top corner of the Forest Green goal. MK Dons and Morecambe could do with a response.

GOAL Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Derby County – Michael Smith (43 mins)
Michael Smith sent a penalty into the right corner. A poor backpass finds Marvin Johnson and a slight pull from Curtis Davies, now sent off, was enough to bring the Wednesday striker down. It looked harsh, but it could be massive! As it stands Peterborough are going into the play-offs and Derby are out. For now.

GOAL: Fleetwood 0-1 Ipswich

GOAL: Exeter 1-1 Morecambe – Cole Stockton (52 mins)

GOAL: Fleetwood 1-1 Ipswich

A superb finish from Finn Azaz coming as a sub and provides some real quality. The ball broke neatly for him on the edge of the penalty area and makes no mistake in hitting the target.

An equaliser for Stanley at the Kassam Stadium as Korede Adedoyin scores having initially cut inside.
