Latest promotions and relegations in English football – 17th April 2022

In this article, we take a look at the latest promotions and relegations in English football with the season’s end nearing ever closer.

A 3-0 defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient confirmed the end of Scunthorpe United‘s English Football League status after 72 years.

It took the hosts just 15 minutes to break down the Iron defence with Paul Smyth turning his marker on the edge of the penalty area and sent a powerful effort into the net from a tight angle.

Scunthorpe looked down and out on 24 minutes when Theo Archibald aimed a venomous left-footed shot into the net from outside the penalty area.

Iron ‘keeper Rory Watson missed a Jordan Brown cross from the right, leaving Ruel Sotiriou the chance to header at the far-post header, making it 3-0 on 30 minutes.

The visitors’ best chance came two minutes after the break when a shot from Liam Feeney was turned around the post, before Leyton Orient’s relentless attacking play continued.

Sotiriou, Hector Kyprianou and Harry Smith saw their efforts hit the woodwork as the visitors were very much outplayed to leave Scunthorpe, elected to the Football League in 1950, facing National League football next season.

Down in non league, there were a number of teams crowned champions as well as some having relegation confirmed.

Soham Town Rangers confirmed: “Unfortunately today’s result [1-0 defeat at Shepshed Dynamo] confirms the club’s relegation from the @NorthernPremLge Midland Division after 14 years at step 4.

“Details for next season will be confirmed by the FA next month”

Mangotsfield United were another team to go down on Saturday, saying: “Full Time and a result that will see us relegated to step 5 along with Barnstaple Town. Bit of pride to play for in the last two ties now. Up next Slimbridge at Cossham Street on Monday 3pm.”

They fell to a 4-0 defeat away to league leaders Plymouth Parkway, who were 3-0 up by half time thanks to goals from Hall, Carter and Crago, before Rose put more misery on Mangotsfield in the 88th minute with a fourth goal for his side.

Twitter reaction:

@louiemiller1967: So sorry to hear but will still be there to follow you next year onwards and upward up the mangoes @arlo2801

@AnnePea54124718: My Paul remembers the powerhouse Mangoes team of the 80’s when he assisted at Ottery St Mary in the Great Mills league, and said they will come good again.

@cw_gas76: Was always going to be a big ask to get anything today. Bounce back next season! #uptheMangoes

Congratulations are in order for Bedford Town, who have finally won a league title with two games to spare after beating AFC Dunstable 2-0 in front of over 800 fans at The Eyrie. Connor Tomlinson getting both goals, the first after 12 minutes and the second on the 74th minute.

That result, and Berkhamsted’s 3-2 loss at home to Harlow Town, means Bedford now can’t be caught at the top of Southern League Central Division One.
