Kalvin Phillips sticks his middle finger up at abusive West Ham fan after defeat at Newcastle

Kalvin Phillips sticks his middle finger up at abusive West Ham fan after the 4-3 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

A West Ham supporter called him ‘useless’, so Phillips expressed his frustration by sticking his finger up at them as he boarded the team bus.

West Ham boss David Moyes admitted that his decision to bring on Phillips for Michail Antonio when they were leading 3-1 ‘did not work’.

As Phillips, on loan from Man City, was boarding the coach back from Newcastle, fans requested to take a picture with him, but he chose to get on the team bus instead.

It was during this time that one supporter shouted that he is ‘useless’, which clearly angered Phillips, leading him to raise his middle finger in response.

Subsequently, fans expressed their discontent by telling him to ‘get out’.

Phillips had yet another afternoon to forget, giving away a penalty for a foul on Anthony Gordon in the 77th minute, resulting in a goal scored by Alexander Isak.

He was also turned by Harvey Barnes for the goal that secured the home team’s win in the 90th minute.

Since making his loan move to West Ham in January, Phillips has made eight appearances, mostly as a substitute.

The 28-year-old had only played in four Premier League games for Manchester City in the first half of the season, none of which he started.

His time at City has also been a disappointing one since his £42 million signing in 2022.

Additionally, Phillips, who was previously a key player for Gareth Southgate, was not included in the England squad for the matches against Brazil and Belgium.

After the game, Moyes explained his decision to bring Phillips on in the 69th minute.

‘I actually thought at that time when we went 3-1 up, Newcastle were there better team and still were,’ he said. ‘I thought an extra midfield player would give us more control in the middle of the pitch. Obviously, it didn’t work.

‘We needed a defensive structure that could be steady and see themselves through. We tried to find it by the change (Phillips on).

‘We tried to find something that would give us more structure and a bit more organisation.

‘But I have to say, before the penalty kick, Newcastle missed two big chances in the middle of the goal, so that was the reason we made the change, not because we were thinking we were winning 3-1.

‘They had missed big chances and I was trying to make sure we weren’t going to lose and make the change in a positive fashion.

‘We tried to make it at that time, and obviously it didn’t work out.

‘But I’m not going to say anything about any player. I wouldn’t do that, it would be wrong.’

This is how Twitter users reacted as Kalvin Phillips sticks his middle finger up at an abusive West Ham fan after defeat at Newcastle…

@halliday_9: Ah aye sound you can shout abuse at him but he can’t give a bit back?

@CashFlows333: Well on boys. Deserves every bit of criticism. Embarrassment of a player who puts no effort or attempt to improve his game. Will never forgive this fat mess for forcing rodri into the ground last season

@AzariaJohnson14: Tbf the fan deserved that

@tonywbrown: Makes me laugh, people think they can abuse and humiliate a player in public and then cry like little girls when he bites back. If you can’t take it back, don’t give it out.

@NUFCJ4ke: Fair play to him

@SuperstarDJHWG: A fanbase upset by a lad giving them the finger while they cheer on a bloke who kicks cats around his house 🤣

@JOEREILLY1689: Sometimes the step up in your career on paper ends up ruining your career. Phillips leaving Leeds for City has ruined his career unfortunately.

@Alltheleedstalk: Fair play Kalvin, one of the nicest footballers off the pitch so to be pushed for that reaction speaks volumes

@ellis_platten: He has to return or go abroad at this point you feel. I don’t think any other move makes sense

@jimmy_L_UFC: Yeah poor lad , playing for the club he loves made him the player and Bielsa , looks uninterested and in just an awful rut . Pep destroyed him as a player and a person

@peppercornchef1: I never felt a return to Leeds was a great move for him. I now feel it’s his only move

@thetommoore: Good on him man. Absolutely love owt like that, grown men thinking they can hurl abuse at footballers for weeks and act the victims when they get sommat back. Deserves better, bring him back.

@GeorgeBatten3: I’m actually with Phillips on this because to stand there and abuse your own players is fucking disgusting and sums up how toxic our fan base is currently. People will say ‘he’s paid the money he has the right’ but what do you achieve by that his confidence is already low #WHU

@archieballoo: To be fair, bit weird if you’ve waited about for an hour to abuse your players after the game

@NickHarden92: He’s been awful since he joined West Ham, but like any player in a bad position, bade mood, after a bad cameo, what do you expect? He’s getting hounded and reacted, like most players do. Feel sorry for him in a way. Pep clearly broke him. He was so good for Leeds.

@Yxllop: Imagine being a grown adult, travelling all the way from London to Newcastle, then waiting around after the game for long enough to see the players get back off the bus so you can shout abuse at them and then crying on social media because someone gave you the finger.

@lukefrxst: Don’t understand why people think they can just hurl abuse at football players and not expect to receive a bit back 🤷🏻‍♂️

@bscholey90: What do you expect all he’s had since joining is abuse & criticism & he’s had a moment of weakness everyone knows what the real KP looks like

@madmidweeker: What a soft load of melts these wham fans are. If you can’t take it, don’t give it out.

@ibbywhu: He actually flipped the middle finger at our own fans? Make him train with the U23’s until his loan ends the fucking lazy wanker

@LUFC_WorldWide: The absolute opposite of the Kalvin we are used to seeing. Sad to see

@SMXLFC: 😂😂😂😂😂 Fair play to Phillips…people need to remember that footballers are human beings

@GreenJ92: The world of football, you can literally scream abuse at a bloke you don’t know but the cry about it when he gives a bit back.

@Perkinz9: What a smug prick. If he does continue to play for us, I hope he gets booed. Absolute tosspot. He should be apologising for his performances. Not telling our fans to fuck off with a smug little wry smile.

@GingerPirlo_: Something tells me KP won’t be at West Ham next season.

@ben_personal: So we have an animal abuser with one leg as our club captain, and our highest paid player is an unfit bloke that does this. West Ham is not a serious club 😂

@notpaul1985x: Disgraceful but I can’t say I blame him. Far too many of our supporters deem it acceptable to hurl non stop (and at times disgusting) abuse at certain players/the manager and think it’s perfectly acceptable. These people are human.

@_LewisLFC: West Ham fans deserve that tbh

@SherzCapone00: It’s hilarious how fans always feel like they can abuse players but as soon as they react they don’t like it lmao

@shelleyj89: Makes me laugh that people expect players to not react when their own fans are shouting abuse at them.

@JamesSCFC_: If you can’t take it don’t give it. Absolutely fair play to him for standing up for himself
