Josh Windass gives brutally honest reaction with Sheffield Wednesday knocked out by Mansfield

Josh Windass gives a brutally honest reaction with Sheffield Wednesday knocked out of the Carabao Cup Second Round by Mansfield Town.

Christy Pym had a game too remember as his vital saves in normal time, before saving a spot kick meant Mansfield  pulled off a Carabao Cup penalty shootout win against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Anthony Musaba put Wednesday ahead on 28 minutes before Rhys Oates produced a quality equaliser with five minutes remaining to send the game to penalties. which went into sudden death after Pym kept out Will Vaulks while Cameron Dawson also produced a stop from Will Swan.

Aden Flint netted against his former club, but Pym produced heorics as he denied Liam Palmer and put Mansfield in the third round.

The result means that Wednesday haven’t won a game in normal time after only scraping through the First Round on penalties to Stockport, and lost all their other games.

Windass, who hit the bar in the game in midweek, gave a damning assessment, demanding better of himself and his fellow teammates.

“Another game that’s not good enough,” he told swfc.co.uk.

“I thought in the first half we were quite sharp, to be honest. We started well, created a lot of chances, probably could have put some more away as a team.

“We hit the post and created a lot – we could’ve been two or three up.

“Obviously penalties are penalties, anyone can miss one, world class players do, but it shouldn’t have got to that stage.”

He continued: “We played against a team two leagues below us, and no disrespect to Mansfield – but we need to start looking at ourselves and start improving our performances.

“We’re disappointed, we’re five games in and haven’t won a game yet – this club demands winning.

“We’re not happy with how we’re performing, and we can’t blame anybody other than the players that are going out onto the pitch.”

Xisco said: “We have to improve, it is simple as that. Tonight we had 25 shots and Mansfield had three or four shots but the score is 1-1.

“When the game goes to penalties anyone can win and Mansfield won on this occasion.

“We created the chances but did not take them and this must change. We work hard in training for the games and as we saw against Cardiff on Saturday, we score the goal but did not get the second goal and we lose the game.

“No matter how matter times you kick me, I will get up and come back and this will be the same for the players.

“This has been the way I am all my life.

“The good thing is that in football you get another chance very quickly and in four days’ time we have another chance.

“The players are giving me 100%, they are giving everything but we have to improve the quality.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Josh Windass gives a brutally honest reaction with Sheffield Wednesday knocked out by Mansfield…

@J_swfc1867: Great interview this, speaks very well. A lot is down to the players and underperforming.

@ryanHarry_9: Josh always speaks very well and very honestly. 👏

@davo33uk: It’s right 7 managers can’t be wrong – time player stood up and took pride in that shirt – should have been out of sight first half last night

@Big_Dave91: Honest assessment is were going down if Xisco doesn’t leave and Chansiri doesn’t sell up

@JPymTKC: Soon gone from the “fans need to be patient bollocks”. Clubs in other leagues had better starts and sacked managers. We wait til game 10 with XM we will still be on 0 points.

@tcswfc: support the team , not that bloke upstairs tho

@Keeno650391032: Is windass not shaving his beard till we win

@wesleyangus252: Let’s be honest we’re gonna lose on the weekend it isn’t a question not only has the team not preformed they have lost support from fans a large amount of fans want chansiri out and I can’t blame them. Every game we say the same thing awful performance again.

@mrwendy___: Unreal interview that

@OSimpson96: Well spoken, top pro. Hope we can get this season on track. Bang on with everything he says here. #swfc

@_WaWaW_15: Very honest. Actions speak louder than words though.

@corben_burrell: The most honest I’ve heard anyone

@litherland_sara: Top interview, very honest but the manager picks the team and the position they will all play. So for that part we can blame Xisco and then blame Chansiri for bring in Xisco

@0736card: Honest well said but when Xisco is playing lads out of position it doesn’t help. Case in note Josh is not as effective out wide like he is central.

@CarlosElsworth: Very honest from Josh as he is a lot of the time but ultimately he knows it’s wins on the board that count, and he also knows that if they don’t win then it’s the manager that gets the sack not them. frustrating times at the minute and it’s hard to see when it’s guna turn round.
