Jordan Pickford slammed over ‘arrogant’ interview as Jamie O’Hara finds fault with water bottle

Jordan Pickford has been slammed over an ‘arrogant’ interview as Jamie O’Hara finds fault with his water bottle penalty message.

There was some clever planning behind the 29-year old’s save of a penalty from James Maddison as a close up shot of the goalkeeper’s water bottle reveals instructions.

It showed Maddison’s tendency to aim for the middle and ‘stay in the centre’ with Pickford feigning a left-right move, managing to block Maddison’s penalty.

O’Hara was asked: “Pickford and the water bottle… Do you think that should be allowed?”

To which he replied: “It gives an unfair advantage to the goalkeeper. I don’t know if I like it.”

In a chaotic game, Everton and Leicester City had to settle for the draw with both still in deep trouble as they hope to avoid dropping out of the Premier League.

Everton and Leicester began the match in the bottom three, however, a single point lifted the Foxes from the drop zone based on goal difference, while Everton stay 19th place, a point behind Nottingham Forest (18th), Leeds (17th) and Leicester (16th).

Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted his second goal in the league from the penalty spot after being brought down by Timothy Castagne.

Soyuncu cooly finished after Wout Faes’s knockdown for the equaliser.

On 33 minutes, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy received the ball following James Maddison’s through ball and then rounded Jordan Pickford to score.

Calvert-Lewin missed an open goal at close range, the ball appeared to strike his foot. Leicester then broke up the other end where Vardy smashed the crossbar, making this quite some game.

Pickford kept out Maddison’s penalty in the first half, then Alex Iwobi’s low finish nine minutes into the second half brought the visitors level, but neither team could go on to get a winner.

Everton will also been concerned by the serious injury that Seamus Coleman sustained during the first period after a collision with Boubakary Soumare.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, tells Sky Sports: “We’re both fighting, both down there and there’s a bit of anxiety on the pitch. We got the first goal, which was nice and I thought we played a brilliant 20 minutes and did what the gaffer wants, then we dropped off.

“From the fans’ perspective it was a good game to watch, we created a lot of chances and their goalkeeper made some good saves. We missed chances, but created the most since the new manager has come in so it was a plus, but also a negative.

“I thought we were brilliant, it was just those final details with the delivery. Small details win games, but we didn’t get beat. Brighton next Monday so rest, recovery and get ready for the game.

“It’s a point and we don’t come away from Leicester with zero. We know we’re still in the bottom three and it’s very tight down there. We roll our sleeves up and keep working hard with a fighting spirit.”

On the penalty save from James Maddison’s spot-kick, he added: “I did my homework. I called it this morning where I would go. He is a good player and he would’ve expected me to move but I double-bluffed him and got one up on him.

“It was a big moment and I’m happy to save it, it’s what I’m there for.”

Leicester goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, speaking to Sky Sports, says: “It was a basketball game and we wanted to take more control – we have to work on that and avoid that against Fulham.

“In the Premier League it was my busiest night, I just tried to do my job. We only got one point, but we came for three.

“We’re really disappointed [in the dressing room] and I think it’s one of worst games we have played for many games.

“Everton did really well to do a basketball game, we were losing too many balls and we have to do better.”

Leicester boss Dean Smith to BBC Sport: “We were second best in the first half. I wanted it to be a little bit tighter. We knew we’d have to defend the second ball. We never covered the half-spaces well enough.

“We came back which is what we needed to do and had some good chances in the second half.

“The season was never going to be defined by this. There are still 12 points to play for.

“This was probably the worst we’ve played in four games so far. The important thing is you don’t lose these games.”

Everton boss Sean Dyche to BBC Sport: “I’m more pleased with the performance [than the result]. We came here to get all three. A lot of the play was very good from us tonight.

“We had 23 efforts at goals and a lot of good ones at it. We’ve been working with the players on the mentality to free them up. Dom [Calvert-Lewin] is getting stronger and sharper and we’re getting bodies in better areas.

“People giving maximum will count. It’s another point, a positive point for many reasons. That’s the performance level we need to keep working to and eradicate some of the negative details.

“All games in the Premier League are tricky. We just stepped off it for a couple of games but it’s back on tonight.”

On Jordan Pickford’s penalty notes: “We try to tick a few boxes and do things as correctly as we can and give players the best opportuntiy to perform.”

On the save: “It’s not an easy one but he did well.”

On Seamus Coleman’s injury: “It’s a knee injury, It doesn’t look too good but we’ll wait and see. He’s been terrific so it’s a loss for us.”

This is what fans said with Jordan Pickford slammed over his ‘arrogant’ interview as Jamie O’Hara finds fault with the water bottle message…

ON THE INTERVIEW:

@PeteFrostArt: His arrogance acting like his team is in top 4 is an insult to everton fans, he doesnt seem to grasp the reality of the situation his club is in or if he does then he just doesnt care

@MiranShamall: Pickford is too cocky for a guy with a -25 GD

@Proudy31589: Never has such an average keeper loved himself so much. He’s in relegation battles year after year with no top sides in for him.

@Ddunn1988: Imagine being an Everton fan and seeing your £40million goal keepers being this smug after a 2-2 draw whilst sitting second bottom of the league with a few games to go.

@Lukey_Wx: talking like he isn’t going down 😂

@rachelmccourt_: Think I just threw up a bit

@LiamK1998_: Goalkeepers at Peckham Town’s level would save that

@stevehomelander: You’ve conceded twice , nearly 3 if not for the shot not being on target . You only get to be smug when you win

@hssjmcha: 19th in the league…

@WhatsAnIQ__: Pickford is one cocky twat, I can’t stand him

@CapitalG5000: Tell me you’re a massive bellend without telling me that you’re a massive bellend.

@NeilF88: He does himself no favours.

ON O’HARA’S COMMENTS:

@leecartwright94: Pickfords attitude is very much that of a man who’s already got a move away sorted. His whole energy is so weird considering the predicament Everton are in. If you’re a fan are you not getting really pissed off by that?!

@Christianjw92: Why’s it unfair for a goalkeeper to do their research 🤣

@SteveHaleGK: @Mrjamieohara1 Free shot 12 yards centre of goal, GK not allowed off line, taker can stutter, do whatever he likes these days but GK has to have foot on line but GK not allowed homework on taker, doesn’t player have enough advantage to score? May as well just give a goal then 🤬🤷🏼‍♂️

@RonnieStidolph: Absolutely nothing wrong with it! GKs are already at a disadvantage as it is with penalties. Got to keep one foot on the line right now, & next year, have to stand still too 😬🤦 Fact is, if the taker is good enough – he scores! I think it’s only right GKs do what they can!

@onlyfooty22: The water bottle didn’t chose where Maddison was gonna go did it 😂😂😂😂

@BaxtersSoup: If the penalty taker is allowed to do a hop, skip & a jump to put the keeper off then the keeper should be allowed to have some sort of an advantage as well

@mattyrei1878: Keepers have been doing it for years… but as soon as Pickford does it, it’s somehow an unfair advantage. Anti Pickford agenda is out again… someone hold start a condolence book for Maddison’s penalty, you can put it next to the one for van dijks leg!

@saywattharry: Behave, Jamie. If a player can’t step up from 12 yards and score a pen it’s on them, not the goalkeeper. A penalty is so scewed in favour of the striker that about 90% of pens go in.

@Burnsy19921: Does that include if subs are made that players are not allowed notes on to be given for instructions? For me we praise also in penalty shoot outs for keepers so why different now?

@Stephmal85: Does exactly the same for England is he bothered then?

@ghardie33: Talking rubbish again. Let them crack on. It’s called research. Next he will say those little notes sent on the pitch with a sub should be banned haha

@SmiggoM: Every gk can do it.. and managers give players little notes.. everyone should do it rather than it being disallowed. We wanna start stopping everything..

@Lloydy_78: Is he as bothered when coaches shout instructions to players on the field, or when subs run on with little notes about formation changes for their team mates? O’Hara being offended for the sake of it. Pickford was clever and it worked.

@RyanGould23: Strikers can stutter, take their time, stare a goalkeeper down, wait for the goalkeeper to move before shooting and keepers have to stay on their line. Strikers have a huge advantage at penalties so if keepers want to do homework and have on bottle there is absolutely no issue

@glenr76: Oh stop whinging, don’t mind when he does it for England do ya. End of day, a professional football player is taking a shot at 12 yards. If he put it either side he would have scored. My dad always used to say a prof footballer should have his wages docked if he misses from there
